His acting was intentional. The way he spoke was intended to invoke drama, and I would say he did it fairly well. At any rate, the original Star Trek wasn't simply about Kirk. It was about a number of matters, from allegory to current events (remember the censors wouldn't have allowed direct references to civil rights, Vietnam, the Cold War, etc.), to loyalty, and friendship.

No, the only thing that surpasses Enterprise in terms of pathetic plots and rehashed stories is the abortion of a movie that was Star Trek: Nemesis. And even then, it's a close shave.
