It should be in stores in the next day or so. In the meantime, first reviews are rolling in....

Gaming Illustrated - 96%

"The Final Word: Superb in every way, technically, atmospherically, visually, sonically, it's got it all. One of the best games on the PC and one of the best games ever made full stop."

IGN - 9.2/10

"I started out loving this game. It had so much of what I'd been missing. Sure, it looks fantastic, but it also plays well and is satisfyingly long; each of the 20 levels should take you about an hour or more to play through, if you don't get risky and keep your head down. But I hit a few level design roadblocks that, combined with the Spartan save game system, made for some numbing repetition of load, die, load, die, load, die, ad nauseum, until I finally figured out the correct strategy. If Far Cry had manual saves, even a limited number per area or for the whole game, I would have been overjoyed. I really hope they add this in a patch, or perhaps add it as an unlockable feature. "

Gamers-Depot - 5 1/2 out of 6

"Yes, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 are coming, and we’re just as excited as you are about them, but 30 minutes into Far Cry, and you’ll cease caring whether they come out this year or in 2006—Far Cry is the total package; outstanding gameplay, completely groundbreaking graphics, and a storyline and plot filled with surprises and heartpounding excitement."

I too am hoping they add manual saving via patch as mentioned in the IGN review....the static saves in the demo were the one negative I had with it.

Mine did and it's pretty modest (Athlon 1700, 256MB, MX440). Some effects looked terrible but the demo was still great fun.

Can. Not. Wait.

The Australian release date is Thursday, but I've got tomorrow off work so I might ring around and see if anyone has it in yet.

The save game system.... It is a little console-sih, yeah, but in another way I really like it. The problem with a quick-save button (especially in a game like Far Cry where you only get a small amount of health and die very easily) is the temptation in tense situations to mash it literally after every kill. There's something wrong if you feel the need to save the game every 30 seconds. Also, the Far Cry system forces you to try new things. If one approach doesnt work you go back and try something different, as you're not commited to the sometimes unfortunate actions you took before a quick save. I like that sense of non-linearity, it's compelling.

Just checked both of my local EBs (yes, there's two, and they're almost right on top of one another), and my local Best Buy to no avail. Looks like my area isn't getting Far Cry until tomorrow, I suppose. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

And dammit, I love UT2k4. So do you, Riv. Damn you tinkerbell! DAMN YOU! <3

More reviews:

Computer And Video Games - 93%

"Far Cry has lifted the bar so high that most of the shooters in our A-list shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breathe. In deference to the leaps and bounds Far Cry has taken over its rivals, and the signs of even greater things afoot, we've even rejigged our scoring system to cater for this new form of shooter excellence. Whether or not we'll have seen even more impressive feats by the end of the year is yet to be seen. However, what I can say is that Far Cry is a bona-fide classic: a technological marvel that's as rewarding as it is beautiful. For the time being at least, it's the beating heart of the first-person shooter."

Games Domain - 8/10

"Outstanding graphically and sonically, Far Cry's gameplay doesn't quite match up to its looks. That said, the AI and imaginative set pieces make it easily the best single-player first-person shooter of the last few months, and it's almost worth the money to simply stroll around the island enjoying the sights. Bring your lunch, because once you're immersed in Far Cry's world, you won't want to leave."

Video Games Life - 94%

"It’s terrified us with its claustrophobic corridors, it’s scared us with its huge environments and it’s made us unhealthily scared of genetic experiments. It’s totally recaptured the fear that Doom gave us, and it’s done so effortlessly. Far Cry is the new benchmark for the first person shooter: Half-Life 2 and Doom III be warned."

The demo sucked... AI was beyond stupid... and I really have no desire to get it... interesting to see a new game come out though.

Did you play the second demo? The AI was a lot better in that one. The auto-save thing was never a problem for me. It kicked in at pretty good times.

I really get confused when people say the AI was stupid.. everything I saw when I played through the first demo (and I played it 5-6 times through all the way) impressed me greatly. The AI didn't spot me through random foilage, but relied on sound and actually seeing me to start attacking. It didn't track me automatically, but went to where it last saw me and called in reinforcements. They spread out and tried to flank me, recognized my thrown grenades and responded with some of their own, and generally were a pain in the *** . They took cover behind trees and rocks and leaned out to take shots at me. Rarely at the beginning an enemy would run right at me without firing, but I'm sure Crytek has fixed obvious bugs like that. I can't wait to pick up the game (and start learning the editor!)..

The only thing I'm worried about is how well it will run on my b0x. :-/

Got 1.3 Ghz processor
512 DDR RAM
64 MB GF2MX vid card
... eh

the demo ran marginally well with low setttings and 640x480 graphical resolution aaaaah...

I just don't want to dumb down the beauty with low detail settings!

I want reports on the quality of the sandbox editor. Specifically, brushes. Someone told me it relied heavily on models for indoor stuff and structures, and if that's true, I'm not so hot on the editing scene and probably won't buy it for awhile.

Gamespot - 9.2

"Far Cry is a stunning game in so many ways. It certainly raises the bar for graphics to new heights. And yet, it's not just a technology demonstration. In Far Cry, the graphics are just one of the ingredients that submerge you into the experience. The developers exhibit a growing sense of maturity throughout the game. It's as if they themselves were learning how to use the graphics engine in conjunction with the AI, sound, and level design to create a superior gameplay experience--one that starts out impressively and, for the most part, just keeps getting better. The result is an awesome thing to behold, and it's an even better thing to experience."

...tracking down these reviews is barely giving me something to do whilst I wait for tomorrow, argh [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I think the AI was superb, but the graphics weren't ALL they were cracked up to be, the jumping system was...screwy...and I didn't like the fact there was NO way to be completely silent while moving. Granted, just walking wouldn't be silent, but crouching should lend some sort of silence. Ah well. But yah, it was a decent play, but I'm holding out for BF:V. Oh and Deus Ex is the best shooter IMO, at least in SP. It's gonna be really hard to beat for the next...oh...few months. Till Doom 3 comes out [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Wasn't all it was cracked up to be? If that's the case, you're not running the game at its highest settings. With everything cranked up, Far Cry is the best looking game out there

Best. Anything. Ever.

It looks AMAZING with everything on very high. Shame I have to crank things down a bit to get a playable framerate... Still, bloody good game so far. The outside bits have been the highlight. Had a few troublesome spots, but some good lateral thinking and planning got me through them. Also once I opted for the most hairbrained outrageous option and managed to pull it off. Good stuff [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Only complaint is a few minor but annoying sound glitches.

I have only played the first level thus far. It''s quite entertaining. I think this is the first one I haven't been able to run with everything set to highest in a while. Mainly because of the PS/VS 2.0 that is used with textures over medium. This FX5900 is showing its faulty pixel shader 2.0 support. Ah well, I will live.

How is Multiplayer? Does it run well with lots of players?
2004-03-24, 6:31 AM #34
Looks like an awesome game... but the people and vehicle in the second shot look crappy... it looks like they have been superimposed onto the scenery... like a crude 70s movie with a bluescreen effort... apart from that... I doubt i'll buy it, since I can't be arsed downloading the demo and I like to try before I buy.

It looks much, much better in-game, trust me. By far one of the most perfect looking games I've seen, and a near-perfect framerate to go with it. The full version runs much better than the demos, and handles differently.

I'm interested in running a Far Cry Site only if the editor doesn't suck and if there's interest in editing here at massassi.

Which is why I want to know about the editor's support of brushes.

I see.

On an interesting note, I was looking at a few forums today and noticed some comments from an ex-CryTek emplyee.

Robert Peterson - Tester

After being one of the game designers (we didn't have an acting Lead Game Designer until Chris Natsuume came on board), a level designer, technical writer, cinematographer/video editor for the marketing team and the guy who implemented the QA department all I'm getting credit for is "tester".

I've got credit as a tester....as does the Technical Producer and one of the artists that worked on the game. There are also several other people that spent at least a year of their life working on the game who won't even get credit.

That's what happens when you quit Crytek.

I'm so glad I'm gone from that place.
</font>

Interesting.

Apparently the editor does not support brushes. The only way to make indoor areas is to use prefabs, i.e. models.

Interest in Far Cry editing just dropped really low. I might still pick up the game though.

Just picked it up today at about noon. Got there right as UPS dropped off the shipment to EB. The guy at the counter knows me by now, and just grabbed a copy of FC and rang me up without me even saying anything. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Been playing it since about 1:30 (4 hours or so, now).. It just crashed on me on a level load, but that's the first problem I've had with it.

I took some screens, which, due to size, I shall link to.. 1024x768 with very high on all settings save AA and AF (and I was fiddling with settings testing performance so the resolution may change).

Took a hang-glider and shot down a heli to get this pic...

Can anyone else say "Vietnam mod"?

A shot from Research, the second demo level. (This is retail, however.)

Play the game and you'll figure out what these huts are for.

Mercs down below.

Some areas are just hellishly pretty.

Managed to get the humvee stuck.. but I thought this looked nice.

A shot from that rope bridge in FarCry0005.jpg.

One more...

Last one..

Just taking in the view..

Generally performance is up across the board. The game is amazingly enjoyable, and obviously extremely pretty... 5 CDs, and god do I wish Ubisoft had done a DVD release... but still... its very very cool.
