Proud of my.....
2004-03-28, 11:08 PM #1
Country? Race? Ethnic Origin?

Whatever it is, I want to rant about it... and the fact I think its stupid to be proud of your race/country/whatever... really, be proud of something you have achieved.

I saw a guy in a pub saying something along the lines of "Proud to be English!".... I expect he has never compared it to "Proud for having bones and skin!" damn, i'm just rambling now because it gets me all furious... whats your take on this idea?

Patriotism, nationalism.. they're all pointless. Why can't people just call themselves human rather than american or english or whatever? Seems like it only causes problems.

I'm probably missing your point, Mr Yogurt, but I dont see how me being proud to be Australian in any way detracts from anyone elses pride of their country.

I don't follow the logic. Why is it stupid to be proud of your country or nationality? Is it stupid for a son to be proud of his father? After all, the father's success is not something that the son has achieved. Is it stupid for me to be proud of one of my good friends, who competes at an international level in track and field? After all, his success there is not my achievement. What about my grandfather? Should I be proud of his bravery in WWII, even though he died before I really knew him?

Or are you arguing that we shouldn't be proud of those things, either? If that's the case, then I can understand your feelings. Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense to me. I would think it would be a good thing to be proud of other people, not just yourself.

I would guess that the guy in the pub was in effect saying that he is proud of the practices and achievements of the country that he calls home. That seems implied to me.

I'm proud of my wife, my three kids, and another on the way. All I have worked hard to build, and that's called a family.

It's everyone's goal, as far as I'm concerned, to build a loving family, and raise beautiful kids. Not everyone gets to do that...

Hmm... since I started this, I guess I should post an example of something i'm proud of...

I'm proud of my CD collection... its quite large nowadays.

And just to clarify for people like Krig... I think its fine to feel a bit of pride in your friends achievements, but "Proud of my Country" WTF?!?!?! its just a landmass, its never done anything... sure, people have done stuff on this landmass peviously... but the landmass has done nothing but endure humanity.

(i just dropped the keyboard on the floor and it typed "#][=t6y67-0" without the quotes.... thats a lot for a keyboard to type when you drop it once).
