down my throat in every thread mentioning IE... Let people make up their own minds. "Use Firefox" is not the solution to every problem.
2004-09-14, 8:49 PM #2
"Use firefox" isn't the solution to every problem, but it comes damn close. If you people insist on using IE, that's fine. But don't try to block progress of right-minded individuals who might make the switch. IE doesn't need support on forums. Shut up and let us use propaganda.

I agree but sadly threads like this just fan the fires of the burning arguments in this area.

I started using Firefox last week after using IE for...well....ever. I quite like it, though maybe I lack the kind of personality that gets wet over browser features.

If you insist on using IE, that's fine with me. Just don't ***** that you have an *** load of problems with it.

I think firefox blocks sites of exessive lame. Such as the browser based "game" of runescrap. Err, scape.

No, from even more numerous threads it has become apparent to me that "use linux" is the solution to every problem.

I mean really, who wants an OS like Windows that is compatible with everything! I don't want to play any video games or run standard office programs, no sir! I would rather run obscure programs that I download off the internet that require you to download 59 different 32 kb packages to install something that only runs off a command line! And heaven forbid that I would actually want to have something that is user-friendly!

Now before I start being attacked by linux zealots, I would like to say that I AM ONLY JOKING!!!! PLEASE READ THIS!!!! THIS IS A JOKE!!! DEAR GOD, IT'S A ****ING JOKE!

And since I know at least one person will have entirely skipped over that, I will say it again. IT'S A JOKE. CALM DOWN.

Java and Quickime work fine for me on Firefox. I just had to reinstall them in Firefox.

I think it should be noted that, I'm pretty sure Kyle is joking.

And yeah, things like java work for me. You just have to install it for Firefox. It should say something like "This doesn't work because you do not have the needed program. Click here to get it."

Of course, personally I use and enjoy firefox, but it still pisses me off that people completely skip over people's questions.

I totally agree, Mikus.
I think Firefox is great, but responses like that don't help and are just bloody annoying.

I agree with Mikus. It is very annoying when you click on an IE/Windows problem thread, and all of the responses simply tell the original poster to switch to linux/firefox.

I tried Firefox, and after spending ages transferring my Opera bookmarks across, I discover the program doesn't even let me automatically order them the way God intended bookmarks to be ordered; folders first, then individual bookmarks. Back to Opera for me. It's much faster, too.
2004-09-14, 9:42 PM #19
Firefox vs Opera is a completely different arguement, that has been raging since both broswers came to existance. Both have their ups and downs. I don't care which you use...

As long as it's not IE.:p

The funny thing is...I never have had any problems with IE. None. At all. It has never once crashed or anything.

For the most part, that's true for me as well, and I've been using it for 6 or 7 years.

Any problems I've had are the typical "this program has caused an illegal operation and must be closed" crap, but I would get that with any program I'd ever use.

Ever since I got used to the services, and stuff and figured out what I do and don't need, I haven't had a single problem with any program outside of the actual Windows OS.... but that was only two times since then, which is about 9 months, and it was only one problem per each of my computers...

My parent's computers aren't as stable, but beats the living crap out of my brother's computer... it's the most unstable POS in all the world. Never had as many problems with a computer as I had with his the other night.

Actually its a Java error but thanks for coming out.

I like the "new tab" feature in firefox, which is partially why I use it. I also use it out of habit now, and I've never had any problems with it.

I've never understood why browser/OS debates even start. Computers and everything installed on them are tools and are only ever as good as its user. An idiot is still an idiot no matter what they're using.

That's just ignorance. No, you don't get those nearly as often with Firefox. Trust me.

I use Mozilla, and Java based things run fine. I've also tried FireFox, and they are the same, so Mozilla > Firefox (Irony) by a small margin.

Firefox has crashed once for me in like 4 months. FOUR MONTHS.

I don't tell people to use Firefox anymore, I just say stop using IE, because that right there is your problem. If you have a problem with firefox, then I'm going to help you. Why? Because there's no real reason to USE IE unless you just really, really, really like it (and security holes, too). Firefox and Opera offer protection from all the adware and more protection from viruses, and there's very few sites that mess up under them.

I've had a problem once, when I tried to use housecall, with firefox. Solution? Have an IE icon on my desktop that opens straight to it, and use it only once a month. That's only because of some java BS. Otherwise--smooth sailing.

Sounds good, Ive been using 'scape and it's almost as bad as IE. Hope this works!

IE has not crashed once for me in 15 months. FIFTEEN MONTHS.

I'm still confused how people think that they're protected from these supposed security holes in IE by not using it. It's integrated into XP, and, as long as you're running XP, those security holes are still there. Unless you're talking about spyware and adware, in which case: stop visiting porn sites and downloading "free" shockwave games.

IE is a viable web browser, with or without SP2, and the people who goosestep around saluting non-IE browsers need to shut the Hell up.

Oh man, don't even start on Linux.

I installed Mandrake the other day. It looked pretty crap, so I decided it was probably a good idea to update the graphics drivers. I have a Geforce 3, so Nvidia it is.

So.
1. Download drivers
2. Try to install drivers. I don't have permission.
3. Log in as root.
4. Chmod.
5. Install drivers. I need to shut down X.
6. Find out I need to edit /etc/inittab
7. Work out how to use vim
8. Edit boot parameters
9. Find out that save and quit is :wq
10. Reboot
11. Find out I need to edit xorg.conf
12. vim up xorg

I was supposed to change "nv" to "nvidia". But I see it is currently at "radeon".
It was about now that I realised that I didn't have the Geforce 3 in this box, I put it in another machine a month ago, and there's a Radeon 9000 in this one.
Considering that steps 1 to 12 took me a good 3 hours, I was not best pleased, as I had just wasted 3 hours and I was back at step 1.

In XP, it'd go something like:
1. Download drivers
2. Install drivers

and when I discover the mistake I'd go "d'oh!", rollback the drivers (perhaps booting into safe mode, if the nvidia drivers had cacked stuff up), and install the correct radeon drivers, and I'd be merrily on my way.
That'd take less than 20 minutes, I'm sure. Worst case scenario, I'd load up system restore (oh how I would like to make passionate love to the man that coded up system restore. it has saved my computer so many times)

I am, however, having lots of fun with lynx. I regret to inform Brian that Massassi looks crap in lynx. Linux has lots of "WHAT THE CRAP ARE YOU DOING NOW" moments, so it is ill advised for those with dodgy hearts.

I did, however, enjoy the amount of control I had over networking. None of XP's voodoo magic networking, I banged in the right IP addresses and hostnames and voila I was up and running.

Still, I have yet to see how Linux is in any way a good Windows alternative. I'm still very glad that I have XP on dual boot.

No, it's not, and you ARE safe from the security holes. The main reason IE has so many holes is ActiveX, which, while IE is running, allows programs to directly interface with the computer, instead of just the browser. That's what makes it so dangerous. Firefox doesn't USE ActiveX, so it's NOT so dangerous.

ActiveX can been disabled in IE.

See, this is why its annoying... You're saying that ActiveX is the number one problem with IE. I agree, but a lot of people seem to think that the only solution is to install a browser that doesnt use it. Why not just tell the person with the IE problem to turn ActiveX off? It takes less than 30 seconds to do.

The problem with this kind of response is that many people just don't care. If I run into an IE screwup, all I want to know is how/if it can be fixed...I honestly don't give a damn if I'm using the internet better. I just want it to work.

Or you know, not. There's also major problems with the way it handles java and other codes. ActiveX is just the largest issue.

I suggest we implement general policy set by the CSUSM help desks (student and faculty). Person calls, you help them fix the problem. You get their machine up and running for the time being so they can finish whatever task they need to accomplish. You recommend better solutions (such as using Firefox over IE) you do not order them to abort their current methodology and implement a new one on the spot. You called for help and I'm supposed to help you fix the problem not go "OMG IE R SUX DOWNLAOD FIREFXO N00B" I do that, I get fired .
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

How is java handling an issue? After SP1 IE6 doesn't even officially support the Microsoft Java VM, everyone is supposed to be using the official Sun VM.

I'm not sure if it's since SP2, but unsigned ActiveX controls will never get downloaded (unless you change the default settings) and signed ones will always get a prompt first.
