Who got the OT on DVD?
2004-09-21, 3:03 PM #1
I did. I'm glad I spent my money on it just for the bonus disc at least. They show some of the makings of Ep III (Mainly the duel between Anakin and Obi-wan.) I want to go see it just for that battle alone.. What's your take on the DVD's?
obviously you've never been able to harness the power of cleavage...

The most pressing question for those who have it is... how is the quality?
2004-09-21, 3:09 PM #4
Can't get it until payday :(
2004-09-21, 3:11 PM #5
Quality is great. I could tell a significant difference between the SE's on VHS. Sound is better and the images are sharper. Also, full screen or wide screen? Wide for me.

Quality is excellent. It truly looks like a modern movie when talking purely in terms of visual quality.
2004-09-21, 3:57 PM #8
I think the widescreen and quality are reason enough by themselfs to pay 40 bucks for this.
2004-09-21, 4:00 PM #9
$40 for three movies!? That's amazing.

That's like $13 per movie.

I would have imagined that it would cost like $100+.

Anyways, Lucas lies that this is the definitive version so people buy it. If it is successful he will release an ultimate collector's edition DVD set which will probably include an even newer version of Star Wars and the originals. Of course, only if this release is successful.

Yes !!! Today was a day that I've been waiting for :D. Having a mooch round some of the shops, I found the price varied from £29 to £34. In the end, what sealed it for me was a limited edition (while stocks last in HMV) Gold box set of the trilogy (not surprisingly, it was in the £34 bracket).

But what the heck - I've been earning this last year, and if you can't shell out on something you "need" (not "want" - let's get it right ;)) then what the heck? ;)

Anyways - I'm happy and can now sit down and enjoy watching them. Truly, a day that I feel deserves and warrants a ":D" :)

After I got back from classes today, I went in search of it so I could see it, and make up my mind then.

The closest place the had it within walking distance (I'm no fan of driving. People on the road are crazy.) was Toys 'R Us. *shudder* I HATE that store. Especially the one near me.

So I walked in, found in, and then began the process of making up my mind. In the end, I decided that having it on DVD, in Widescreen format, with 5.1 Surround Sound, and a highly detailed remastered video, completely outweighed the downside of having to sit through all of the crap he changed.

Ten minutes later I was outside with a Widescreen set in my hands and short 40 bucks. The price was 50, but they gave me a 10 dollar gift card for anything in the store because I bought it. So I turned right around and used it on the DVDs.

I haven't been able to sit through all of A New Hope yet, but what I have sat through (just to the part where they plast out of Mos Eisley) is VERY good. 5.1 is simply awesome. This is one of the few movies that seems to really make my system shine. Lord of the Rings is another movie that sounds fantastic on it. The video is quite sharp. I was seeing details in the distance of some scenes I'd never noticed before. And the Widescreen format only adds to it. If you go for anything other than Widescreen... You're insane. It's amazing how much I HAVEN'T seen off to the sides in places.

So, for the moment, I'm enjoying it. It's fulfilled the reasons I wanted it and then some in a few small places. I will say, however, that it isn't replacing my Trilogy Box Set from when the films were re-released. I still plan to watch those.

Question, I heard from a review site that the music for "A New Hope" is muffled out or something, or maybe the review site has a defective copy?

Muffled out where?

I've been watching it. I have a 5.1 surround system hooked into a SoundBlaster Audigy. If the music is muffled, I sure as hell haven't heard it. The movies SOUND incredible. To me, the 40 bucks alone was worth it just to hear them in 5.1.

So yeah, unless they have really cheesy speakers, or a bad copy, the music is not muffled.

I have it. $46 and change total. I thought it was good. I opened it up and watched The Empire Strikes Back . My favorite of all the classic trilogy. I think it was great. I didn't think the CG use was tacky or over abundance. I wasn't pleased with Vader's line being changed from "Bring my shuttle."

I've yet to see ANH or RotJ but I will. Personally I recommend it.

Hmmm... let me see. The Fry's I work at started out at about 700 copies when the store was opened. Around the noonish area, we had already sold about 500 of those, and then we recieved another 500 copies around the same time. When I left at 4:00, the count was 900 sold. Do you think we sold the remaining 300 by the time the store closed at 9:00?

Probably a lot earlier than that.

I got them... I think I was one of the first here who got it :D

However, I've liked them. The horrible Hayden in ROTJ ending is just one failure, and otherwise they're great.

I just finished watching ANH.

I'm perplexed by a number of things. First, what's with all of the green lights all of a sudden? I swear there are green lights on the Falcon that I've never seen before... Then there are quite a few places on the Death Star where you have green lights. Most notably, the tractor-beam-control-place-thing-that-I've-forgotten-the-real-name-for. While not bad... it's just... bizarre...

Second, when Vader and Ben have their showdown, what in the world is up with the yellow blochy flashes of light when the sabers clash? I can understand having a dramatic flash when the sabers come together, but yellow?

I think those a the two main things that really bothered me right off. Well... not so much bothered as made me want to seriously question what he was trying to achieve with such weird color selection changes. There were a number of other things I noticed that I didn't particularlly like, but it's 2:20 AM here, and I'm not about to try and remember them all.

Still... Seeing it in widescreen and a uber remastered video with 5.1 owns.

Personally, I think you're examining the movie way too much. :p Also, if I remember right, the flashes were yellow originally. If anything is to blame for these other "colour changes" you mention, it's probably the process used to bring it from analog to a digital source. That, or it could be the quality of your TV/the video cables connecting your player, etc.

I'm glad I bought this. Got a free poster too for reserving, w00t. In addition, I get a $15 rebate. Not too shabby. The first thing I watched were all the bonus materials. I won't spoil anything too terribly, but the Episode III preview was... spinetingling. Which is a good thing. :) All in all, I recommend this to any Star Wars fan or even casual watcher.

P.S.: All of the rumours about things being changed are false. It's exactly the same as the Special Edition, but cleaned up for the digital format.

Incorrect about no changes. Greedo and Han now shoot simultaneously (or nearly). Tractor beam controls now in alien language as opposed to English. Jabba redone. Overall, episode IV is an improvement over the SE. I watched the end of RotJ and indeed Hayden is there (horrible I thought) and there is a Naboo celebration scene mixed in with the rest of them. I'll pop the extra features disc in my XBox to check out the Battlefront demo when I get a chance.

Not so much over examining as merely curious. I'll have to check the VHS box set I have later. I seriously don't remember that at all. And I KNOW those green lights were never there...

My only real complaint, is that he did all this work cleaning the movies up yet again, but left the trash mattes around some of the Tie fighters in one of the scenes.
