Let me start out by telling you a little bit about her. She's one of the nicest people you could ever meet. She's an artist, fairly successful in that and very talented. I've never heard an unkind word out of her, everything she says is to make a person feel better about themself, or to make them laugh.

But now the bad part. My cousin lives in New York City. Last night, she and her roommate were raped and beaten. My aunt and uncle flew this morning from Omaha, and we haven't gotten back very much news about her condition. All we know is that she was severly beaten, and is not in good condition.

It's hard for me to express how I feel right now. I can't even bring myself to be angry yet, I'm still in a shocked phase. I just feel so helpless and lost right now.

I just wanted to place where I could organize my thoughts in words and maybe get some sympathy or ways that I can help. So, your thoughts are very much appreciated at this time. Thanks, folks.

I am in full favor of castration of convicted rapists. It punishes them *and* prevents them from raping again... or at least keeps them from having any desire for sex.

Man, that sucks.

I hate rapists and people like them... they actually deserve the worst in my opinion. When the society is in a point when rapists are forced to give their possible internal organs of good quality to the people who really deserve them, one thing of thousands things that make me happy is fulfilled. There are of course other things, but I am out of words.

However, I hope that things get in good condition for her and her roommate.

I don't really know what to say in situations like these, but I'm pulling for your family.

I hate rapists. My friend's sister was raped several years ago, and she's been through several group homes trying to deal with her depression and self-mutilation. Now she's laying in some hospital room after a bad overdose.

If I found the guy that did that to her I would torture him for hours.

That's awful, I'm very sorry for her. I can tell you all one thing as a girl, and that's that the fact that most guys can just overpower you and do as they wish if they were so way inclined is a terrifying thought. Because of the way I was brought up (regularly being involved in supporting and trying to achieve justice for women who've been abused) I've always felt that I'm stronger than most and could deal with a guy getting violent - but the fact is, I almost certainly couldn't, and I don't think I could get over the experience very quickly.

Please encourage her to do everything she can to bring the people responsible to justice. The conviction rate for rapists is depressingly low, but it has alot to do with women being too scared to report it and not wanting to drag it all up again. It often seems alot easier to just try to forget about it.

Anyway, all I really wanted to say is that my thoughts are with her, I got a little carried away. I hope she's ok, both with moving on from this and with her physical injuries.

Since we're on the topic of rape, I'll pass on my question I thought of a couple weeks ago that makes absolutely no and complete "sense" at the same time:
"If you hated someone, why would you rape them?"
Please don't tell me the dominance thing or anything. It's just a little question to further strenthen the argument that rapists are just messed up (even though it is common sense already ).

Kieran... normally its very hard for me to find anything even remotely offensive, but this post... just... wow. People who have suffered through rape do not come out of the situation unchanged. Rape is one of the most horrible things a human being can do to another human being, and for anyone to expect that the victims of rape can live their lives normally afterwards is totally unfair. I hope, for your sake most of all, that you learn to have more respect for other human beings in the future.
