Mozilla or Firefox?
2004-10-01, 2:53 PM #1
So I'm rather sick of IE, so I decided to make a browser change. When I got to the site I noticed Mozilla had Firefox and Mozilla, and my question is. Which is better?
2004-10-01, 2:57 PM #2
I got firefox last week and its slow as hell to load pages
nope.
2004-10-01, 2:59 PM #3
Mozilla would be claimed as being more stable. It also comes in more of a suite package, including Composer, Chatzilla and something else.... That is the main benefit having the all in one suite, but with Mozilla PRO 1.0, whatever default mail program you have setup, you can select to read your email from within Firefox. There is also a chatzilla extension for firefox.

Lies!

I've had firefox for a year or so (I now have the latest version..updating = yay) and it's always been faster then IE. It has all these cool extra features, popup blocker, its super super super fast, and it tastes like pudding!
Think while it's still legal.
2004-10-01, 3:00 PM #5
I think mozilla is like a full suite of different features built into the browser. I have not used it, so I am not sure, correct me if I am wrong please.

I use Firefox though, preview release 1 ;)
2004-10-01, 3:03 PM #6
It's the same as FireFox just with more extra features. I might use Mozilla for a while, see how things go with it.

I just tried out avant, its nice..... better than firefox so far
nope.
2004-10-01, 3:34 PM #11
Avant is just as bad as IE, because it mearly IE with a differnet interface.

Mozilla if you want features, Firefox if you want speed.
Konqueror if you want KDE integration. :p
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.
2004-10-01, 3:45 PM #12
Avant if you want a browser that works.
(I have never gotten a virus and no one has ever stolen my credit cards, and I get about 3 spyware cookies a month, do you Firefox users get 0? Or just few? You guys are so paranoid, no one is out to get you)

Edit: What bloat? Avant runs faster than firefox, as far as I've seen
2004-10-01, 3:47 PM #13
let it be said here, firefox sucks glorified ***
nope.
2004-10-01, 4:01 PM #14
Nay, Firefox is my browser of choice. Quick, simple, and I've never had a single popup since I got it.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.
2004-10-01, 4:08 PM #15
too me avant look pretty much just like IE

2004-10-01, 4:11 PM #16
i tried firefox for one month (about) and it was a good browser but it crashed on me all the time for no reasons at all (like scrolling down a web page) so sadly im back to using IE
2004-10-02, 2:24 AM #17
Probably a problem with that build snoop.

Boco--are you high? Firefox is awesome. I used avant...it was laughably slow after a while. And it's got all the vulnerabilities of IE.

Avant == IE. What part don't you understand? :p

It's got the same security vunerabilities. It's got the same HTML standard incompliance. You might as well be using IE, since the whole reason people download Firefox is to move away from those security vunerabilities. And by vunerabilities, I'm talking hardcore spyware, not cookies. Avant still uses ActiveX just like IE, and that just leads to a whole hell of a lot of problems. There's no reason to even bother looking at it as far as I'm concerned.

Well hell, I don't even need to say anything more about the browser, their own site tells just how bad it is:

"Is Avant Browser a secure browser?

Yes, Avant Browser is secure. Since it's based on Internet Explorer, Avant Browser is as secure as Internet Explorer."

As secure as IE eh? Well, I think we all know how secure THAT is. *Dies laughing*

No, tell me. How secure is IE? Because I've never had a problem, someone tell me about all these so-called vulnerabilities.

well have you ever gone to collegehumor.com and accidently clicked a pop up or hit yes on one of those gay things... next thing you know you have a whole new 'favorites' section, a bunch of super cool icons (for pr0n) and yes spyware sending companies every key you log into it....

MY SYSTEM IS BROADCASTING AN IP ADRESS OH SNAP BETTER GET FIREFOX
2004-10-02, 8:52 AM #26
Maybe we should all stand back and realize that it is really all just a personal preference what browser we use. I was simply asking if there was any diffrence and the only one I found is that Mozilla has a few more internal programs than FireFox does. Therefore I am using Mozilla and I'm happy with it, but that doesn't mean for one second that the browser you are using is any worse. IE can be very secure with the right things installed to protect your computer just like any other program can be. It comes to down to being all about your personal preference, we really shouldn't be ripping each other apart like this, over web browsers.

No, actually, you're ripping everyone else apart, and everyone else is proving you wrong.

Just thought I'd interject.

Detty--you can, but that's not the only problem with IE. Not anywhere near the only problem. The fact that it's so close to the actual core of Windows is the biggest one (it's integrated into it) and ActiveX is of course one way for it to be able to directly communicate with the kernel.

Anyways--Firefox; less spyware, more sleek, more extensions, activex workaround
Mozilla; less spyware, somewhat bloat, more inherent add-ons, activex workaround
Opera; less spyware, more bloat (imo), more inherent add-ons, banner (unless you want to pay, what, 30 bucks for a browser? :\) no activex workaround.

IE used to have some issues with active x controlers and pop-ups, although Sevice Pack 2 added in protection. I personally didn't like IE because it took to long to load the pages. Mozilla/Firefox loads them in about half the time.
2004-10-02, 12:54 PM #34
I use Firefox, but I could just as easily use Internet Explorer. I just seem to prefer Firefox.

I went Firefox towards the beginning of the year.

I haven't looked back. It's simply better. Damn shame I can't rip IE from my system.

The biggest reason is all the spyware. Its so easy to get spyware that many people get it without even knowing, until suddenly there's a new IE toolbar they didn't ask for, and they can't close it. Then you get popups coming up with no browser open. Then you get keyloggers and other bad things.

And by far the largest reason that these things get on your PC is through clicking on things in IE, either unintentionally, or not knowing what you were clicking yes for. If you use Firefox or other non-IE browsers (Avant doesn't count), then you are not susceptible to these vunerabilities. Those links won't work, and those dialog boxes asking for permission to run a program won't come up. Avant does try to avoid these by blocking popups, but popups are only one of MANY ways spyware comes through IE. And of course, all these spyware programs affect IE, no other browsers. Those stupid toolbars only install themselves on IE browsers, not Firefox/Opera/Mozilla. Those keylog and password stealing programs only work under IE. Etc.
2004-10-02, 1:38 PM #38
I've been using avant for 2 years and I have yet to see any dialog boxes or toolbars or random favourite or homepages I must be uberlucky.

Go to massassi's chat page. Go to where the chat window opens. Does it pop up a message asking for authorization to run that script?

If it doesn't, then Avant sucks more than I thought. ESPECIALLY if it loads the chat program without asking.

If it does, then it is just like IE. And with the same vunerabilities. You've just been lucky enough not to run into them.
