Public computers are the most annoying things ever!!

I've already moaned a little about having to use IE, not being able to chat and having no music in my pleading for help thread, but I can't believe how badly this thing is set up. The right mouse button does nothing. NOTHING! This screen's probably 15" and it's set to 800x600. sure some people may need it that big, but I need it smaller! I have a headache from the size of everything. Plus I have to login for everything which is just plain irritating. Why hasn't the world been setup to please me yet?!

anyway, just a little whine. I miss you guys (esp. the 'pot); 'til my computer is fixed...so long...

whats wrong with your machine?

Too much goat porn.

And welcome to my entire schoolyear, maeve. I can't get any chatting done at all because all ports used by most IRC servers are blocked "for security reasons."

You need to pay heed to Wolfy's post (not about the goat thing, but otherwise  ). Things are as they are to annoy you and other users. It encourages you not to take too much time using the public computers, thus granting also other people opportunities to use (and hate) them.

but anyways, unlucky, the pc at my school are like that...
nope.

Uh, and Wolfy, can't you set up a proxy?
2004-10-04, 8:59 AM #10
Yah, I know what you mean. I'm on a public computer right now, and it sucks. First off, half the keys on the keyboard are stuck. Second, the screen is covered in fingerprints and smudges. Third, and most important, its forcing me to use linux!

Those aren't too uncommon... Although Only WinXP+IE makes up about 90% of the public computers on my uni campus. (such as the one I'm at now). However, I've found ways to work arround many of the problems (though nothing that would help with chatting yet... Sorry). At first, I thought that Service Pack 2 would be the end of the usefulness of the computers... But even that has holes, he he... Perhaps you could describe the computers (desktop icons, permanent settings, whether Deep Freeze is present, etc.), and I'll see if there's a way you can work around it. (I've been able to play any game that I've tried online here, for instance)

There's plenty of Linux computers here at Polytechnique, considering that many of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year courses in computer and software engineering are in OpenGL programming in Linux, and creating portable code. :D

Yeah, I can understand a Linux comp. at a school.

Didn't think he meant at school though, so I was kinda surprised.
2004-10-04, 10:28 AM #15
Yah, its in a computer lab at the University. So I suppose it's technically not "public". But it has all the annoyances of a public computer.

But I'm back at my residence now, enjoying all the comforts of my l33t personal computer.

What I hate about most public computers is that they're always set to 60hz. Gah!
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

The computers at my campus library are truly public... about a fourth of the popel using them aren't attending the uni. However, all of those are deep-frozen with only WinXP, IE, the big three internet-based chat clients (YIM, AIM, and MSN), and Microsoft Office.

[edit]fortunately, the monitors are set at 85Hz, so I don't have to worry about headaches.[/edit]

Me too. The first thing I do whenever I use one is set it as high as it will go.

Nope. I get "Software Connection Caused Abort," and I think it's the campus network, because I can connect to the proxies just fine at home.

what's so bad about 60 HZ?

Mine is set for that, and it doesn't bother me at all. Actually, it won't go any higher and still display a picture.

I like my unis computers.

The only restrictions are ones that make sense... illegal/porn sites are blocked. We can only access our work, nobody elses. That's about all the restrictions there are We can change most of the settings including resolution and get it off that gawd awful 60hz. Theres not even a space limitation (well only the size of the network server drive...which is huge) what's even better is that the network server is running linux and we can access it from SSH from the net and get to our files. Or even host a website from it.

The only restriction i want to bypass is the cdburning limit, we can only burn 100mb of data at a time. This is supposedly to do with copyright. looks like i'll be putting all my downloaded iso's onto my mp3 player for now ;)

Oh and 1/3 of the computers are running Redhat :)

I think she means it's big in the sense that things look huge when viewd in 800x600.. not that 800x600 is a high resolution.

That really sucks. Btw, what exactly are these iso images that you're buring, for curiousity's sake?

Silly users who treat public PCs as their own and end up making me have to do more work are the most annoying things ever!
2004-10-04, 3:10 PM #30
They're there for the public use. I take it, Darth, that you're there to fix whatever's wrong? Why are you complaining? It gives you a job. Oh yeah, god forbid someone have to do WORK to make a living.

Public use for school-related things... Not to load up with every stupid IM program and IE toolbar in existance.

Don't preach to me about working either. I do my job, and I do it well. You're still a kid in high school...
2004-10-04, 6:32 PM #32
OUCH!

I don't have to worry about public computers, I just haul my laptop around at school. We've got WiFi just about everywhere throughout the campus, and my battery lasts almost five hours if I'm just chatting or playing around in Word or VC++.

What's your point? The fact of the matter is--I use firefox at my school, and I know if I were caught I'd be expelled for 'hacking'. I also use IRC. Is it used for school related issues? No. Does it matter? Not really. In fact, not at all.

Listen, whether or not they're there for school-related issues, your job is to fix what's wrong with them, right? If nothing ever went wrong, you'd be SOL and out of a job.

Frankly, you're a lucky *******. Don't give me the whole "You're still just a kid in high school" bit, acting like I don't know what work is just because you're another ignorant adult.

Not to mention the fact that 19/20 techies are people who got their A+ certification and feel special, yet whenever a problem comes up instead of dealing with it all they do is format. Yeah, it works sometimes, but it doesn't fix everything.

Well Yoshi, it's just most people don't take kindly to an attack on their work ethic.

Sometimes the attack is well-deserved. Sometimes people don't realize what does and does NOT give them their job, and complain about the very thing that gives them the work they have.

There's still plenty of room for problems to arise without more being caused by uneducated users. Despite whatever my job is, and whether or not it creates work or not, they're still not intended for private usage. Treating one that's owned by a school, library, or whatever like it's yours is just disrespectful usage. It's not yours. You don't have a right to use it however you wish. You have a right to use it within the guidelines outlined by the facility.

Oh, and I see I touched a nerve there, haha.

Oh, and your little "what gives them work blah blah" spiel is silly. That's like telling a soldier to not complain about a war because it gives him work.
2004-10-04, 6:45 PM #37
But haven't you ever noticed that the "thing that gives you your job" starts to become the "most annoying thing ever", as Darth put it? If you work retail, customers start to become annoying after a month or so. A little while longer, and they're all idiots. ALL of them. Etc.. etc..

Okay, but if the facility is a public library, technically you can do whatever the hell you want with the computer. Whatever. Government mandate. Comp Lab? Really shouldn't matter, but supposedly only 'school related' things. Though if the people there aren't belligerent they'll let you use it for personal reasons.

Touch a nerve? Somewhat. I've seen posts by you before, acting like you're the end-all of god's handiwork when it comes to this topic. It's just been a long time coming.

You do realise that what you're saying is like saying that you can go out and kill people because it gives cops their jobs, right?

You sound like one of the kids who would get kicked out of a lab because they just like to go in and cause trouble, heh.
