RUMOR #1: Half-Life 2 is gold. Really. No foolin'. Honest.

Source: If we told you, we'd have to kill you.

The official story: Both VU Games and Valve declined comment.

What we heard: Ever since the release candidate for Half-Life 2 was submitted to VU Games in mid-September, a piñata has hung in the lobby of Valve's headquarters. The plan: to bust the sucker open when the game achieved gold status. Earlier today, GameSpot learned from a locally based source that "the piñata has been broken" and the game has gone gold. Further evidence of the game's completion was a press release issued this afternoon touting the first review of "the entire game." Though nothing official has been announced yet, it appears the fat lady is at last clearing her throat.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus.

I'm not getting my hopes up.
I seriously have to see someone actually playing the game (hopefully me) to know that it's out.

Possible... PC Gamer just reviewed it in the last issue (98%, damn thats high). I think it will probably be out soon some time if the reviews have started. Plus they know if they make us wait any longer, mass chaos will ensue :D

It's obviously not true, why would Valve and VU Games decline to comment on how their game, HALF-LIFE FRICKING 2, one of the most antisipated games ever, has gone gold. Not to mention nothing on either companies sites...

It's 98%. I dunno...I stopped caring...last year, sometime. It just doesn't entice me.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Vampire: Bloodlines are the next two games I'm looking forward to.

God, yes. And, thankfully, Bloodlines looks less like Diablo (Redemption, anyone?) and more like actual true-to-the-books Vampire: The Masquerade, with the dot system and everything.

Don't get me wrong. I WILL be buying it, as long as it's out within the next few months. I'm just not going to rush out and get it.

We're talking about what the reviewers are calling the best fps game ever. It has taken the honor of being PC Gamer's highest rated game EVER. And you think that would be a WASTE of money... after rushing out and buying doom 3?

Actually, it ties Alpha Centauri at 98%. And Half-Life was 97%, so it's really not much different.

Yes but you have to put things in a timeline perspective. Half Life scored a 97% so many years ago. The fact that Half Life 2 recieved a 98% does not mean that it's only 1% better than Half Life. That means that in todays industry, it's the best game around. It was the same way with Half Life however many years ago. It was the best around, and surely you don't think that if Half Life were reviewed today, it would still recieve a 97.

Sounds a little to me like someone has too much faith in a magazines rating.
That's beside the point though, Half Life 2 will rock.
Oh, and yes, it is a waste of money, all games are... It sure is fun to waste it though :D

I haven't bought Doom 3. I haven't the cash. So I've been sitting with my 6800GT, waiting for a good 55 bucks to come up so I can own myself a copy.

That said--you know, a LOT of things have been called the 'best fps ever'. I don't think anything can top Deus Ex. The feel, the awesomeness, everything about Deus Ex is just...amazing. Even now. Half-life 2 can suck it, because from what I can tell the guns fire and act just like they do/did in HL1, and that's what made me LOATHE HL1. Not to mention all the lame 'thrills'.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to get it (more for mods, than for anything else), but the only thing, the ONLY thing that impresses me about HL2 is the grav manip.

Half Life 2 will rape all other games around. In sales, popularity, and satisfaction. Especially among fans.

I have to disagree. I tried playing Deus Ex three separate times (a good few months to a year between each try), and each time, I couldn't comprehend how overrated the game was. The gameplay was outright annoying, though I did appreciate the touch of realism (you sink to the floor, barely able to move if your legs are shot out) here and there. In the end, however, it was a poorly-done game with too much hype (in my opinion).

I think plenty of things can top Deus Ex.

How long did you play it for? That's what I had thought in the beginning. Then after a few hours of gameplay, I was hooked.

All I've watched of Half-Life 2 was that uber large video they released. The guns looked like they were a step up, but that was about all. The grav-gun will be total ownage. The "lame 'thrills'" were usually alright. I was creeped out in a few places, I jumped a few times when I backed into a zombie or something without looking and ended up half dead. Then there was the G-Man, who was basically in a league of his own in terms of all out WTFness. Hmm... I like that term... WTFness...

I half agree with you. I feel the game will be pretty damned cool, and SP will be quite an expirence, but I'm not going to rush out and buy it.

Yeah. I never thought much of the Training level or the first two levels of the game, but once the Story gets rolling, and you start talking to people and reading the papers and books around you, it's a very cool game.

... People who bash HL1 for having "lame" thrills are just stupid. It wasn't supposed to be a particularly scary or thrilling game. It's a sci-fi action FPS, not a survival horror game.

That being said, I don't understand how you could loathe HL1 for the way the guns "fire and act". I assume you mean the instant-hit thing... But how that would make you loathe the game, I have no idea. It was rarely a factor in gameplay (the only gun you'd be using at long range wasn't like that), and when it was it just made things easier to kill. A number of popular games use guns similar to Half-Life. I'm failing to see how you can loathe it, but not them.
Moo.

Wait... what exactly was wrong with the guns in HL1? Sure, they weren't quite powerful enough, but still, I thought they were okay.

Or you know, not. It's me saying I don't like the way the guns behave, I don't like the way the thrills (and yes, Cow, they were supposed to be a major element) were pulled off, and that in my opinion, I can't see HL2 being that great of a game. Am I bashing it? I suppose. Are you taking it WAY too personally (OMFG YOU SHOULD JUST STOP BASHING IT FOR YOUR OPINIONS AND OWN REASONS BECAUSE LIEK YOU=NO RIGHT TO HAVE OPINION)? Yes.

Yeah, the guns in HL1...go play it again. They don't act like guns. They act like toys. At least that's how they always felt to me. The only cool one was the gauss gun.

I'm not taking anything personally. I just find all of your complaints invalid. And please, show me where it says HL1 was supposed to be a "thrilling" and "scary" game. Sure, there were some moments that were supposed to make you jump (headcrabs in airvents, for example), but it wasn't a major factor of the game. Like I said, it was supposed to be action-y, not horror-y.

And how you can say HL1's guns handle like toys, after saying Deus Ex is the best FPS ever, is ridiculous. Deus Ex has the most awkward gunfights in any game I've ever played. Granted, it's one of my favorite games, but saying that HL sucked because the guns "handled like toys", and then saying DX is the best FPS, is unfair and hypocritical.

Like I said, I'm not taking this personally. I'm just defending something that's being criticized unfairly.
Moo.

Just say it. You've been dancing around the admittance since you started 'defending' it. You know you want to say it. Say what, you ask? That my opinion is invalid. That I can't have an opinion that differs from yours. That your opinion is law.

Sorry, but for me, it seemed like HL1 was supposed to be a creepy-esque game...and it wasn't. It seemed as if the guns acted like toys to me (and I thought Deus Ex's system wasn't wholly realistic, but it did a damn sight better than HL1's). I thought it just wasn't a great game. Just like Wolfy doesn't like Deus Ex. THAT'S HIS OPINION AND HE IS ENTITLED TO IT.

So what if I'm not looking forward to this game, so what if I think it won't be any good, so what if I have a negative opinion on the first half-life. Are you really such a fanboy that you can't realize the damn thing isn't perfect?

http://pc.ign.com/objects/003/003107.html?ui=topGames (ctrl+f "thriller") BTW, IGN's opinion is usually quite valid. Or so I thought.
