Intellectual Participation in the Political Process (in the United States of America)

As this election draws to a close, and we have a winner (tentatively, but almost surely), it is time that we reflect on our democracy. The people have spoken. Enough people, for sure this time, have voted for Bush to say that he is the rightful leader to this country. We may not like him, we may not like his policies (I don't), but it is time that the country unifies itself. Rather than fighting over it, why don't we use our power as people to let our representatives know how we want the country to be run?

United States of America. Perhaps we can recover from some of the losses we've experienced over the last four years.

The country is too diverse in its opinions to ever unify completely. Or as Freelancer said, "Screw that."

Same here. I disagree with him on everything.

There's plenty you can do if you don't agree with Bush and his policies. It's a matter of actually doing something rather that fuming.

While I truly believe in the principles of this great nation, I am also a big fan of that 1st amendment. I severely dislike our president, bordering on hate.

And as an American, I have every single right to feel the way I do about that. Just becuase someone is in power doesn't mean I have to go for his cuases, especially when they go against so many things that I believe in.

I am a patriotic American, but heck, right now I kinda wish I was a Canadian ;) :p

I think you guys think I told you to hug the president. I didn't. I told you to focus on issues and make sure your opinion is known on issues rather than making it known on your hatred of this or that elected leader.
2004-11-03, 11:13 AM #10
Patriotism is not something you should feel you have to have. The very idea of it is a little ridiculous. I didn't get to choose where I was born. So it's ridicuolus to be patriotic for my country when that country could have just as easily been China (greater chance of that, actually).

That doesn't help much if you think patriotism in general isn't exactly the best thing. It's not like I look over all the countries and say.. "hm, well this is surely the country that deserves my patriotism!" and promptly move there. I can think of more negatives to patriotism than positives.

If you're talking about extremes of patriotism, it's not longer patriotism, but fanaticism.

Bush is reelected. Stop *****in and start being active and work for what you believe in if you disagree with him.
2004-11-03, 12:09 PM #16
Isn't the whole point of a free democracy that these people should continue to oppose him, that they should continue to protest and that they should remain divided? You're basicly saying people should only express their opinions once every four years, and that when a president is elected they should just give up everything they believe in just to get along with the people they hate.

I agree, the best way for those opposed to Bush's policies to make their voices heard is by contacting their representatives and holding rallies. Even though Bush is going to have all congressional mail censored because of anthrax scares and all rallies are going to be deemed a threat to security and everyone in attendance will be blacklisted before Bush re-opens the WW2 Japanese internment camps for anyone who voted Democrat in this election. After that he's going to kill all the first born children in every household.

I dont believe that Bush is fit to lead this country, maybe like Ghana or something, but he doesnt have the capability to completely destroy everything in the next 4 years. Well, he does, but he wont figure out how to use it anytime soon.

Maybe that just doesn't creep people out as much as it does me. I just couldn't vote for a man who feels the need to arbitrarily censor his opponents.

I must with great indignation take issue with your disgraceful attack on the character and intelligence of my fellow southerners! Why, it is downright shameful to so sweepingly tar such a fine group of people!

The absurdity of your charge notwithstanding, I do nevertheless feel compelled to answer it. Upon further consideration, I do believe I already have! Yes, in fact, I believe this is not the first time you've made a fool of yourself by blatantly insulting the intelligence of people you don't agree with only to be ripped a new one. Yeah, I seem to recall a thread of yours where you ask people why on earth they would vote for Bush! Remember that?

I think it went something like this (maybe other people can help me out here, all that Jack and moonshine we drink in the south has messed with my memory):

You ask why we're voting for Bush after calling us retarded hicks. We go to great lengths to explain why, explaining, for example, the nuances of his foreign policy that sometimes get lost in his simple language. We articulate why we think Bush is preferable to Kerry, for reasons ranging from economics to the war on terrorism.

This is where it gets weird: you don't reply.

So I'm left with two possible conclusions. One is that your grasp of the facts and persuasive abilities just aren't up to arguing with a bunch of drunken retards. The other is that being 'intellectual' means having the gall to call people from a spot on the map stupid simply because they do not share your opinion, pretending you’re above them, but having nothing yourself to offer. If that is the case I am very much glad that the south is not intellectual.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Yes...and they all get hard-ons for war...and they all have the same last name...and uhh, yeah...not all of the south are hicks, but here are some real quotes that prove my case.

"What colors yer daddies tractor?" - Some hick in Georgia (My friend that lives in GA got asked this when he was at a hunting competion by a random hick.)

"My daddy shot dis gator right in da face, and den my daddy..." - Some hick in Georgia (My brother and my parents heard this conversation between two hicks in a restaurant when they were in GA.)

"Ice coffee? How do I make that?" - Some hick in Virginia (I heard this from some hick that worked at a Doughnut shop...They sell 'iced coffee' not 'ice coffee'... I can TOTALLY understand how she didn't understand me...wow.)

"We should've just nuked all them Iraqi countries before they attacked New York." - Some hick in Arkansas (I saw this on an interview on TV...just amazing)

"I'm voting for George W. Bush." - The South (I rest my case.)

Another time my father ordered a coffee from another doughnut shop..."2 sugars, 1 cream, decaf" so the lady makes the coffee and says "Oh shoot, I poured decaf" and she then throws the coffee in the trash..My dad says "No, that was right..decaf." she replies "Oh, sorry" and then she pulls the coffee cup out of the trash and hands it to my father.

So basically, not all of the South are hicks, but it seems no matter where I go in the South, I run into some hicks...I don't really have that problem up north. Besides hasn't it been proven by IQ and SAT scores and such that the North seems to score higher?

If you live in the south, don't take offense, unless you are actually one of the Bush humping, war hungry, cousin loving, english needing hicks.

1.) There was only 1 or 2 people, that actually answered my question. I responsed to a few people, but after that people just weren't answering questions, they were just babbling and running around in circles.

2.) I went into this election without a side. By studying the debates, checking the facts, seeing the country's situation for myself, and reading up on politics I made an informed decision to go Kerry/Edwards. It still boggles my mind today that Bush won. Sure politics is dirty, each candidate spews out crap, but Bush just keeps lieing to America, telling us that Iraq had all these ties and weapons that they just don't have. He won't even admit that he is wrong. The economy, healthcare, education all these other things are just going down the drain. I also find it odd that 200,000 black/hispanic voters couldn't vote this year because there registrations got 'misplaced' and all this crap. 190,000 of them Democrats. Hmmmm, nope, everything seems okay here.

3.) It's funny to hear people tell me I know nothing about politics, when half the people that I talk to are only democrat/republican because it's what there parents are, or it's what there friends tell them to do. People need to get a clue, and people need to do some damn research, and not belive everything the papers and movies tell them. I've read the papers and seen the movies, and I've gone out and found out whats fact and what's fiction.

4.) I never called you 'retarded', because that word was banned by the admins, I belive it was something like "mentally challenged" or "dumb in the head".
Think while it's still legal.

The electoral process would go much smoother if we jailed all blacks because they're not qualified to vote. Once I heard a black guy calling a black girl a "ho." We should jail them. Oh don't take offense if you're a smart black person.

Although you might have thought that was rather witty, and I know you meant it sarcasticly, but the government is already finding ways to stop black voters. Like the 200,000 in Florida that didn't vote this year. Washington D.C. is mostly black people, and Kerry won D.C. with 90% of the votes. Could it be because Bush practically spits on the black population? I think that has something to do with it.

I never said all southerners were hicks, I just said the south has a helluvalot more hicks then anywhere else. What I said was "Everytime I go down south, I seem to run into hicks, I know not everyone is a hick down south, so don't take offense unless you yourself are one."

I think you may be misrepresenting the Southern population.

Now, I realize I left out some states (Kentucky, Virginia, etc.) which some may consider "southern," but I thought a conservative number would do fine, and settled for the Compromise of 1820.
