I already knew Kerry's chances of winning were slim when I got to school, and I was preparing for the barrage of jokes and insults exchanged about Kerry, soaking it all in. Well, some people were really rude about it. I've gotten a reputation for being one of the highdschool's lone liberals. People still like me, but I hate the way the students and even some of my teachers treat me as if I'm some wayward, lost soul who's deluded by the world. The just can't understand why I wouldn't vote for Bush. You see, I got to a very conservative, Christian school.
Well, I'm a Christian, Episcopalian as a matter of fact, and I try to be open-minded. But a lot of people just don't seem to know the meaning of the word. Im more or less centralized on the left-right political spectrum, although it seems a number of people at school are convinced I'm some kind of crazy liberal. I try and make it clear ot people that God isn't a Republican. It just so happens that Kerry is a Christian as well as Bush, but since he's a Catholic I guess that doesn't count.
If some one like John McCain was running, I might just like to vote for him, but since it's Bush, I'd have to choose Kerry. I don't like where this country is heading. With both the senate and the house of representatives now represented in majority by reps, and under the Bush administration, I reckon things will be very one-sided. I like things to be more open and co-operative, but this country doesn't seem to know the meaing of the word. I hate all the petty squabbling on both sides. I find it kind of ironic that after September 11, everyone had "United we Stand, Divided we Fall" bumper stickers. Funny how that, now the elections have come around, everyone has retreated to their own little corner to throw sticks and insults at whoever doesn't agree with them. The Bible warns us about being little lost, sheep, following wherever the otherl leads us, even if off of a cliff. I'm not saying this is what Bush is doing, but I am saying that too many people are just echoing what there parents have said or voting on something stupid like how the candidate looks. People need to be more open-minded and think for themselves. Otherwise, this nation's doomed.
Anyway, back to school, several people made jokes about it and taunted me a bit about Kerry. One kid laughed at me from down the hall and pointed his finger at me as I walked by. One of my best friends even poked me in the back and said "you lose."
Fortunately, I have some good friends, who while are still Republicans, at least have the common sense to listen to the other side and are very supportive of me and my opionions. One kid told me he was going to think a lot more carefully about what he said in the future as a result of things I'd said. That was nice.
People at least gave Kerry a small pat on the back for backing down early on. I bet Bush wouldn't have done that. I don't like Kerry a huge amount, but I think he deserves some respect for going out gracefully. AT least Bush congratulated him, although I'm not sire how real a sentiment that was. I just think th whole electoral college deal is ridiculous in tihs day and age. And this girl had the nerve to say that Gore was a jerk for not backing down from the 2000 elections when he clearly lost. I told her he actually won the popular vote, but she would have none of it.
Well, my friends, some days I feel like just crawling into a box and hiding my face. I wish human beings could be a bit more tolerant, and it's kind of hypocritical when you're supposedly a Christian and you treat a possible president of the United States like that. It's just disgraceful. It deeply saddens me.
But I'm not going to go with the crowd just to blend in. I'll stand for what I believe in. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything, and I try to keep to that, but I always try to listen to the other side of things and keep my eyes open.
