When did Video games become Pop culture?
2004-11-08, 7:31 AM #1
I'm just curious, but weren't gamers considered to be nerds and outcasts many years ago, yet suddenly we have hillary duff and good Charrolette playing Halo 2?

Beautifull women, Cool guys, all playing the latest games.
Why is it suddenly now pop culture?

( Some references taken from the Halo 2 Special on MTV. Yes, I actually did see Hillary duff playing Halo 2. It was terrifying. :p )

It became popular when the nerds were making more money.

I knew you would say that, but thats not what I was refering to.

If you had watched the special they shown several parties with 'good looking' people playing Halo 2. That is what I was refering to.

Video games entered pop culture in 1982, shortly after the release of Tron.

If they're pop culture, why do I still feel like a nerdling every time I walk down the video game aisle in a store?

I think computer gaming still has the nerd aura to it but console gaming doesn't.

It is true though. Suddenly this seems to have happened. My one friend who everyone always considered "cool" now has his girlfriend go to EB and pick up his pre orders for him. That is the greatest thing I have ever heard of.

...You guys seriously don't understand how Ober could use Good Charlotte as an example of "cool?"

The jury may still be out on the "beautiful" thing, since that's kind of a matter of opinion, but isn't something "cool" if it's popular? They may not be "talented" or anything, but you can't argue they aren't "cool"...I mean, as far as the word 'cool" goes.

But anyhow, not to derail this into another arguement over the use of the English language, I'll have to agree with Spe. More people were enjoying video games, and the more people who enjoy something, the more it's a part of our culture, etc, etc...
2004-11-08, 1:28 PM #28
So what?
Who said you had to be a nerd to play a video game?
If it's fun.. Um.. do it.

The nerd title is given to those anti social people who ONLY play video games. And mostely on PC since it's not a "group" activity such as console.

Sitting there with a bunch of freinds you can see and interact with playing a competitive game is NOT nerdy.
Ok, most of that MTV thing was promotion... you could tell Hillarry Duff and Tony Hawk for example did not play the game.

But lots of people play halo. So what? It's a really fun game.

I think video games aren't mainstream in North America just yet. Until we start seeing Counter Strike and Warcraft in our cereals and on TSN, I don't think it's really "mainstream".

I remember a few years ago I had a few kids from my school over for some rounds of CS. They were baffled by my ability to track them through walls using footsteps. They'd played before, but no one could had heard of league-play or LAN tournaments.

I can't argue that it's not pop culture, but North America certainly hasn't "accepted" gaming yet.

god I love that strip. and speaking as someone who didn't have a console (and I've never been that into PC games) between the master system and the PS2, I don't think anyone who hasn't been turned into an aubergine ever deserves to call themself a gamer!

Gaming definitely is pop culture, but working in a video game store, you can easily see the difference between the CS and GTA kids and the truly addicted.

It's like that down in Aussieland as well, probably more so. I can't even mention that I like to play games (or that I'm interested in computers for that matter) without people looking at me as if I've grown a second head. Consequently, I usually just keep my mouth shut when people ask what I do in my free time.

There's still too much of a stereotype associated with gaming for it to be accepted as a valid past time. Add that to the fact that too many idiots want to link video games to violence, so people still think you're rather weird if you're interested in gaming. Can't say as I really care what others think, but it would be nice to be able to buy a game without people looking at me like I'm about to lose it and set the store on fire.

I'll agree that computer gaming isn't reallly mainstream, but console sure as hell are part of the main stream. Just look ar how many video game ads appear on TV these days.

I see what you mean with that, but I think it's still about socialising. If you're someone who plays a 4-player FPS on PS2 with your mates, you're cool. If you're someone who sits in your room alone for 20 hours straight playing WoW, that makes you a nerd. But I think it goes for most activities really. If you do something so much that it prevents you from spending time with people, then it's more like an addiction, and that's never considered a good thing.

My mum's three rules for addiction (if you do two out of the three, you're an addict, apparently)
  • You do it everyday
  • You do it during the day
  • You do it alone

[edit] Rereading that, it occurs to me that someone's bound to make a masturbation joke, so I'm pre-empting it : it's not funny

You guys must be pretty damn attractive and cool to be judging people who have a lot more fame, fortune, and popularity than you do. When you sell out a concert, tell me who's cool. When you're in a half dozen movies before you're legal age, tell me who's beautiful.

Oh, and I think sony had a lot to do with the image shift.

Nintendo/Sega made cool games, but Sony made games cool.

not really, the NES, SNES, and sega genesis started everything in the late 80s-early 90s. I have plenty of old tv shows on vhs tapes that were taped off of the air in that era and it's funny watching the "new" SNES games being advertised, although the graphics are s*** by modern standards.
