Saving Private Ryan
2004-11-11, 6:00 PM #1
I'm so annoyed! They were supposed to show the movie on tv today, unedited and without commercial interruption and for the past 50 minutes they've been showing news reports!

The first was about online predators, incase you all didnt know, 14 year old girls shouldnt go into chats and give people their info and meet up at hotels...and then overweight kids! ahh I want Saving Private Ryan people!

I think ABC isn't showing it because they got heat from parents etc, that felt the movie was going to be too violent for tv. It was supposed to be a veteran's day movie. I was going to tape it! I demand an explanation...it's just not right!

You cant get a girls hopes up thinking they are going to show me a great movie and then just not do it! grrr Ok sorry had to vent

Some ABC affiliates aren't showing it because they are scared thatthe FCC will fine them. I think that's bull ****.

SPR pretty much bored me. The intro was great though.

Anyone else read the title as "Saving Ryan's Privates"? :o

Yes, they did the same thing on my local ABC station as well. Instead, they showed an hour-long special on former President Jimmy Carter during the 8 o'clock hour. I have no idea yet what they'll show for the next two hours. Guess I'll go find out what they're showing at 9 o'clock right quick. It's a shame, but I guess a lot of station managers weren't comfortable with showing it because of what happens in it, but it is a great movie. It had a very profound effect on me. I actually cried during some of the scenes in it, and I am a guy! It's a VERY powerful movie. One of Spielberg's best, along with so many others he has done.

*Clan = I agree! that movie really moved me when I saw it. It shows the real side of war. I was in tears watching that movie, and moved. It makes you have a real respect for war veterans.

Avenger = I heard something about that on tv last night, that some peopole were outraged that they would show the movie. This sux!

OMG it's getting worse...what the...some movie is on and this does not look like Saving Private Ryan, it's got some cheesy music playing...oh this is just getting worse...so much for seeing the movie:(

Check the library for a DVD copy. I'll say no more than that.

Agreed. The first half hour of SPR is good, but then it becomes just another product of Hollywood. If you want some realy good WW2 movies, watch "The Longest Day," "The Thin Red Line," or "Midway." (Or BoB)

I know an old gentleman who happend to be there, storming Omaha beach. He also participated in Market Garden (this guy is really cool, he enlisted to join WW2, and survives. Then his little brother gets drafted into Korea, so he reenlists and goes with his brother, and both come home). He's told me the it's fairly accurate, but obviously it can't give you the complete feeling of fear, yet the adrenaline and feeling of hatred for the enemy that allows the soldiers to keep going. He said the major differences were that in person it's much louder, there were more bodies in your way to the beachhead, and artillery fire was a bigger problem than shown in the film.
2004-11-12, 1:27 AM #21
And how about the fact that they only spend 20 minutes on the beach, while the real thing would have taken six whole hours. That'd be an interesting film. Make the viewers really cold and numb and make them truly hate war.

They did already make a film like that. Its called "The Longest Day," its three hours long, and its about only the events of D-Day.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - ABC affiliates in at least eight states will not televise the network's broadcast of the World War II film "Saving Private Ryan" because they fear repercussions from U.S. regulators.

You guys live in different states, I'm guessing (thanks to Agent-Smith for the link). I saw this on the news this morning and thought it seemed like a good topic for discussion on here, but I forgot about it until now :o

Unfortunately my local station here in Orlando decided not to air it. I had a feeling they might back out. The night before there was a news report about people who were outraged that it was going to be aired on tv. I think they freaked out and decided not to air it at the last minute. It was pretty much like the CNN report that Agent-Smith posted.

I was watching at 8, and a news report came on, then another, and then at 9 they aired some cheesy movie, so I didnt miss it, the station here in Orlando just sux and didnt have the nerve to show the movie :(

It sux that other people got to watch it, while a few of us became victim to our local stations being too chicken to air it, but meh I guess i'll just have to rent it. Thnx for the 411 though:)

Err...what did the nazi say? heil hitler? Why would that be censored, and why do you censor it?

"F*** Hitler" Because: He is the prisoner of war who is the sole survivor from the attacked machinegun nest, which shot the medic (may even be the gunner, as he apologizes, and says that it's just war). He's deperately trying to gain some sympathy in order not to be (illegally) executed on the spot.

If you're interested in the film, there's a good online encyclopedia at www.sproe.com that covers pretty much every topic and tangent imaginable from the film, pointing out goofs and liberties and actual events depicted in the film. It also has stills from the film for each topic.

I saw this movie for the first time last night. Extremely graphic, horrifyingly realistic...guys, boys, getting their intestines thrashed out by 50 cal. bullets, crying out "Mama! Mama, mama!" before being blown to pieces by a German grenade.

..Well, all I can say is I HATE WAR.

I didn't much care for SPR. Most of the battle scenes were wonderful, but the writing was terribly ordinary and it did get way too hollywood in points.

I prefer Band of Brothers bigtime. Enjoyed the characters much more and it felt much more realistic overall. It's one of my fav DVD boxsets :D

I liked SPR a bit, but it was one of the few war movies i've seen, so maybe that had somethign to do with it (although i couldn't help thinking "GET BEHIND THE TANK TRAPS YOU IDIOTS!" when they stormed omaha beach, i play way too much Battlefield). I have also watched Thin Red Line, though, and God i loved that movie. That has to be one of my all time favorite movies.

I also loved Thin Red Line...though I usually keep that to myself for it tends to draw fire. I wish they'd release a decent frickin' DVD of it, there was so much film left on the cutting room floor but the current DVD has very little special features. Bah.
