They showed Schindler's List a few years ago on TV, no commericals and not edited at all. How is that much different than Saving Private Ryan?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

It was before Boobgate at the Superbowl.

Strange, seeing how they have no problem with NYPD Blue.

NYPD Blue doesn't have F*** in the script 50 times.

For those of you who dont seem to understand the controversy, SPR contains swear words and so is legally not supposed to be aired in the 8pm time slot. Some networks feared financial repercussions from the regulatory bodies and pulled it.

They're just trying to protect their own butts. Of course I dont see why they didnt just screen it a little later locally...

No just a couple. And nudity. At least they did. It was controversial at the time. I don't know if they still do that stuff. I never really bothered to watch it much after the first show. Anyways, I was just being sarcastic but I still think it's dumb not to show the film.

I think that SPR is a great movie, I watched through it for the second time on Vet's day on ABC. They played it uncut but with very short(TY abc) commercial breaks. However, they did have a "graphic film" warnings before it came back on. The half-life mod Day Of Defeat is basicaly based on that movie.
This is retarded, and I mean drooling at the mouth

F-Body, just out of curiousity, what is your username in reference to? Cars?

even if you don't like the movie that doesn't mean you can be disrespectful by making jokes about "saving ryan's privates"
i know and am related to several ww2 veterans and do reenacting... so i take offense here.

as for SPR... i have it on dvd. it's worth the $15-20
true, it can be slightly hollywood-ish but it drew/draws attention to what ww2 was really like. and for our generation that is very important since we are so disconnected from the reality of war.

i recommend you watch:
The Longest Day
The Lost Battalion (WWI film... very good)
A Bridge Too Far (About Market Garden... mostly british parachutist stuff)
Band of Brothers, of course
Midway
and read the book Winds of War (and it's sequel War and Rememberance)
A&E made it into a mini series several years ago... very well done)

If you want some good WWII books, all of Ambrose's books (author of Band of Brothers) are amazing, and easy, reads.

Well if the topic is going to stick around, I may as well ask: as someone who has only seen this movie on TV, am I missing anything at all?

I know that Spielberg only lets ABC broadcast the movie unedited, but that "this movie has been formatted to fit your screen and run in the time allotted" message at the beginning got me wondering. By "to run in the time allotted," do they just mean "we added some commercials?"

Just want to be sure...it's a great flick.

Can't believe this film causes controversy. They should make every GCSE history student watch it in school.

I start to tear up when they're trying to save the medic.. every time...., I love this movie..., hard to imagine going through anything of the magnitude of WWII....

Remember our KIA/MIA/Veterans.

My only real gripe with Saving Private Ryan is that it belittles the efforts made by all the other allies - the film barely even nods to the British, the Australians, the......

Yeah, all those other folks.

It's not as bad as U571 one though, which just pisses on the British. That was a travesty.

Oh, and the thin red line needs an intermission! It's painful!
2004-11-14, 12:04 PM #61
Martyn, the movie is about a squad from the 2nd Rangers... it's not about the Allied force as a whole, just a small segment of it...
2004-11-14, 1:28 PM #62
And all the allied soldiers you see in the entire film (and they do bump into quite a few) are all....?

Oh yeah, American.

(and it looks like only american soldiers were at the normandy landings...)

I would be equally as peeved (no really) if the film claimed that it was the British alone who stormed the beaches too though.

Well, there weren't going to be any Brits or Ausies or Canucks on Omaha. The Brit paratroopers were farther north. I don't know that they would have had a chance to run into any other allies.

While I love the flim version of Band of Brothers, the book just didnt have the same effect on me. To me, the book was just a factual retelling of the events... there wasnt very much emotion in it at all.

IMO, the 2 best War Novels I've read are Das Boot and All Quiet on the Western Front. These books give you a much better idea of what young men in war experience on a personal level than the book version of Band of Brothers does.

Technically, there would be some Brits in a limited sense.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

I honestly think that America needs to learn more about its own role in WW2 before we start learning about the roles of other countries. Yeah, we've got a few good movies like SPR and BoB, and a couple of books, but thats nothing compared to what you see if you ever get the chance to visit England. The British are extremely proud of their heritage in WW2. A good 75% of the exhibits at the Imperial War Musuem concentrate on WW2, and you can't walk into any book store without seeing 4-5 aisles of history books, the majority of which are on subjects concerning WW2. In America, we're lucky if the history section in a bookstore takes up more than a couple of shelves.
