Bring it on.. it would only take a few nukes to decimate North Korea as opposed to the many more it would take to destroy the United States. Besides, they may have nukes, but do they have the missiles to get them here reliably?

Anyway, it's pretty amusing. It's like pinching someone and they take a baseball bat back to you.. talk about overreacting.

That's nice. I don't think it will happen though. North Korea knows that if they use a nuke, most of the world will hit them like 84 tons of bricks, give or take a few.

Don't let the size of the country fool you. A couple of well placed nukes in major cities - say boston, new york and washington, would pretty much cripple the united states. And you don't need missles to deliver them. Just sneak a cargo truck across the border... or in the case of New York and Boston, it could even be done with a small boat.

North Korea is so small I bet the US has nuke big enough that it would only take one.

Eh.. If memory serves, a news story said they only had 5 at the time, with the ability to produce 3 (?) more in 6 months. So they'd probably have about 8 right now, assuming my memory and that story was right. It's enough to do serious damage, even if they only get half of them in to the country/detonated. The wind could blow the radiation pretty darn far as well, so don't be sweeping them away like a bunch of cavemen just yet.

But I seriously doubt it would ever come to nuclear war, because of the effect it would have on them, foriegn relation wise.

One detonated in Pyongyang will pretty much send the nation spiraling downward. Bombs placed in NY, DC, will hurt us yes. But we can recover. I'm with Freelancer's "bring it on" post...but there's one problem. San Diego is most definitely a target. Why?

Unfortunately, starvation in the North is such that the time will come when they really don't have anything to lose. Also, certainly the U.S. would obliterate them upon a nuclear attack, but consider the consequences for wherever the North strikes, like, conceivably, Los Angeles or San Diego.

I doubt NK has reliable technology to deliver warheads to the US. We probably have fighters that could intercept them. Just gut feeling, no research.

Anyway, look, we won't nuke NK. We have thousands of troops and an ally right there. At least it won't be the type of nuking feared in the Cold War days and possible again no that Russia is bragging about being able to defeat our SDI. Maybe some smaller tactical nukes hitting key targets.

More likely we're just hearing of typical communist disinformation to its populace. NK has nothing to gain by provoking us into military action. They've already seen an example of what happens to countries that threaten us. Then again, I guess the people do have something to gain. Just not its evil government.

they don't have the capabilities to inflict massive damage to us. it's just a way of bargaining to get more aid from the us. the country is in such shambles that they couldn't fund much of a war.

Have you even read my post? Anyways, there was a good documentary on NBC a few months ago which pointed out how extremely easy it would be to bring a nuke to the heart of any major US city and detonate it without having anyone know it's there until it's too late. Large trucks can easily make it past the border without having their cargo checked. Once that's done, it's simply a matter of driving to the right location. As for importing the device by ship; only a small fraction of cargo containers are inspected, as it would take too much time to check them all, so it's not that hard to smuggle a device that way. In fact, it's no harder than it is for mexicans to illegally cross the border - and that they do by the thousands.

Flexor, I was addressing the issue of a "nuclear war" with NK. Sure, I understand the threat of suitcase type nukes and I have little doubt that NK would work with terrorists to attempt a similar srike. Two different issues, though.

... Oh yes, lets go nuke them so we can nuke ourselves in the process. Why do people always forget about a little thing called "fallout"? This fallout travels around the globe. Eventually, it would reach the US and then you'd have all of the joyously fun radiation right over your head.

So much for nuking one country.

Oh, I'm not really directing this at anyone. I'm just kinda talking.

The fallout would have probably dissipated enough by the time it came all the way around the world. Except that Hawaii would probably be screwed.

And don't some hydrogen bombs have minimal or negligible fallout? I did a little research for a small project last year and if I remember correctly, the fission is only used to start the fusion reaction, but I'm not sure how that makes the fission part any less deadly. I recall one source stating that usually there's another fission reaction after the fusion because of the casing being made from uranium/plutonium/etc, so it goes fission, fusion, fission, but not all have the last fission stage that causes all the fallout. But I'm not really sure.

Do you people realize how little fallout actually results from an airburst nuclear detonation? If we nuked Pyongyang (an utterly silly concept to begin with), fallout would have no effect beyond maybe a sixty-mile radius.

At any rate, North Korea is just looking for attention, same as they have been for over a year now. They're not actually going to use the one or two nukes they've tuilt. That would mean giving up the only bargaining chip they have.

Nevermind your plans to destroy the US, North Korea is just posturing, as a part of the same strategy to secure money and aid they've been using since it was revealed that have a nuclear program.

In any case, North Korea does not have the technology to fire missiles at New York or Washington. They maybe could hit Alaska, but as far as I know, that's it.
