Don't bother buying it though, as you won't be able to play it.

from steampowered.com:

If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.

Thanks for your patience and we will update you when we have more news to share.

--------

I bought one of these copies and I'm SUPER PISSED. I HATE STEAM. DIE VALVE DIE.

They can blame it on Vivendi all they want but they are really just saying screw you to the customers and blaming it on vivendi to make them look worse. In reality both companies suck ***.

Valve needs to find another publisher... I mean really... someone who isn't going to bug Valve about using Steam for distribution.

Valve DID say they would open HL2 in Steam if the release date was broken, but Vivendiwhatever has tied their hands... :( :( :( Brad, I have to wait as long as you do. As does everyone who bought HL2 so far, whether in the store or online. Don't get pissed, we gotta wait too. :p

you can do everything we can plus play with your box and discs

so stop whining and wait for the release date...

If by "Almost every Best Buy" you mean "A select few" then yes. None of the local ones are selling it.

Also, boo frickin hoo. You act like it really matters to wait 3 days, in the scheme of things.

Let me stress it's not Valve's fault. Go read GameSpot's "The Final Days of Half-Life 2" article, they include information near the end on the issues Valve has been having with the Vivinvninrunrdni guys.

Oh, and here's an HL2 spoiler for kicks: YOU PLAY AS GORDON FREEMAN OMG

Your local Best Buys should be selling it. They all received an email from corporate today instructing them to because EB and Gamestop were.

The difference is you were sold something knowing you would not receive it until the 16th. Nowhere on the box I bought does it tell me this absurdity. This is called false advertising, and it is the reason I am pissed. If you cannot understand why false advertising is wrong, then I am very sorry for you.

The release date is Nov 16th, legally, officially. Anything else said by anybody but the publisher is a lie, and false information. You should know this, logically.

And they must have just received it today, because I heard yesterday that they were not releasing it until tuesday, from people who work there (about 8 of them) themselves.

So... it's impossible to play this game without the internet?
2004-11-13, 6:40 PM #19
yes... you need to connect to activate the game... after that you can log in to steam in offline mode to play single player games

Don't see how this one is Valve's fault (for once) as Vivendi is the one in charge of this phase.

Anyway, it's only a couple of days - just play CS:S till then...it's worth it IMO.......damn I wanna go play now too.

How is it that HL2 hasn't been hacked yet? If they are selling it, and just not letting you activate it, surely someone must have gotten around that by now...

All Half-Life 2 Steam files are encrypted (and I assume the files on the retail CD are as well). There is nothing you can do with these files until a key officially unlocks them (unless, of course, the hackers breake the encryption, which is unlikely).

Hmm, Fry's Electronics hasn't started selling it yet, but we might. They did the same thing when releasing Everquest II, someone released early so Fry's stepped up the release as well.

What's REALLY funny is that all these places probably released it at full price, then Fry's is gonna release it and put it on sale for like $40 and everyone who already bought it are gonna be so pissed. Heh. :D

I was wondering why I saw HL2 at Best Buy earlier...

I knew it's release date hadn't passed yet, but I was like WTF?

I held it in my hands... it was almost a good feeling. But I don't play PC games much anymore, I've become a console fan, but that's well beyond the point.

But I really don't like how Steam makes you get on the internet to activate it before you can play SP...

Is that really the only way to activate it? Or do they have a phone number or something to call and get some kind of activation code... similar to Microsoft's activation for their XP products?

First I hated Steam.

Then I thought it was merely annoying.

Then I thought it was OK.

Now I hate Steam.

anyways.
from my experince, steam isn't as bad as everyone says it is, if they'd get some kind of AIM interface in or fix steam friends, it'd be the most convieniant program I'd have ever used.

(I vote they allow steam plugins omg.)

Its only false advertising if they told you it was going to be available before the official release date.

which they did, by selling it.

the reason you have to activate it over steam is because the cd's don't have the whole game on them, they have like 99% of it. Key files remain on valve's servers. So no, phones are out of the question.

Given time, a good keygen maker wil ldo it. I've heard that release groups are no longer including keygens in their releases. The point is, if it could be built, it could be cracked.

Or, you must find out what separates an activated copy from an unactivated one. (possibly a file on the HD or a registry entry) All an aspiring keygen maker would have to do is make a crack that would apply this change. True, you
would only get SP.

You, sir, need serious help. Selling != advertising, and it's only at places that are retarded. Trust me, my local best buy isn't selling it (called them 5 minutes ago).

Seriously, what kind of idiots thinks it's false advertising because select stores decided to sell it early?

For once I agree with Yoshi.

Not only that, but why are you picking on VALVe and Vivendi Universal? its the fault of those best buys. not VALVe

So if you want to go yell at someone, yell at them and tell them to stop selling it.

I mean, thats like how my dad blames IBM for a problem on a Dell. its like "wtf?"
(yes, my dad does actually do that. And he thinks Bill gates and IBM are working together to make his life crap with error messages. )

If you can buy it at a store and the store doesn't say anywhere what the real release date is, then to the best of the average person's knowledge the game has been released. Therefore you have a pretty good reason to complain if you can't play it.

The box may say that you need to activate it online, but it won't say "can only be activated after XX/XX/2004".

2004-11-14, 10:27 AM #39
While I was in at Best Buy here helping opening up there cuase I'm working there as a seasonal employee, I asked one of the guys about it, and he confrimed that yesterday Best Buy corporate told the stores to start selling it, because there were reports of EB Games and Gamestops that had started selling it already. Then sometime in the mid afternoon a guy from the regional offices came in and told the media department to take it back off the selves and put it back in the "warehouse" (if you can call Best Buy's rather small recieving department that).

so if you're Best Buys don't have it on the selves now, don't be too surprised.

It is slightly retarded that they make it so you need the internet to play the game. There are alot of people that don't have online capability... So are we just alienating them?
