The biggest reason to consider Firefox is security.

To its credit, Microsoft is trying hard address that. But as long as IE commands more than 90 percent of the world's computers, malicious hackers will continue to target it. The very IE features that Web developers love are also exploited by virus and spyware writers.

That's not to say you can't get spyware or other malicious code using Firefox, but risks are greatly reduced.

It's a good article altogether really! The few limitations it cites like 'Can't get onto AOL' are brilliant!

Also appreciate the thumbs up to Opera - I use both :D

I use Opera exclusively. Registered or unregistered it PWNS Firefox out the wazoo. The MeGuiDdo skin is what I usre.

I'm trying to persuade my aunt to make the switch, but she's being a freakin idiot about it. I should just kill her and take control over her computer.

I'd replace what Windows used for examining disk drives and folders to Firefox instead of IE if I could... I'm annoyed that, since I'm on-campus, I'm stuck with IE for the time being... Can't wait until I can get home, back to my beloved computer, and use FireFox, which is the only browser I have visible on my desktop and quicklancher. (I'm not going to pay money for a browser, and built-in ads are a killer, given that my combination of software suites and FireFox have made my Internet experience ad-free)

I'll correct myself; my Internet browins isn't quite ad-free. However, I have virtually everything except text-based ad systems as blocked. Pop-ups/Pop-unders are the dreadfuly obvious one, but I also have banners/sidebars blocked, some pre-view ad pages bypassed, and I'm trying to work on context-based ads, both the Google text sidebar/banner ones, and the highlighted words.

Here's some more classic lines from the article:

And Firefox mysteriously froze the first time I checked America Online mail. Closing the browser and restarting it fixed it on two different computers.

I see they had to go to the Bombay Stock Index to find a site that wouldn't work. I say: LOL!

As for AOL, who uses it anyway? If they're an AOL user, "l33t g33ks" like us don't want them soiling our browser up, and AOL tries to make their site as incompatable with anything that's not their own browser anyway.

Within a week of deciding to switch primarily to FireFox, my computer became infected with Spyware for the first time in a few years... :(

I've gotten no spyware with the last few versions of Firefox.

First, Firefox does a better job of protecting your computer from spyware/malware, even GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS have conceded this.

Second, it's Symantec. If you're going to attempt being sarcastic, the best way not to look like an idiot is to spell things right.

Third, Norton sucks.

If you would just accept that maybe just maybe there is more than one right answer and both browser work just the same, well maybe you wouldn't come across like you do.
2004-11-16, 3:16 PM #22
But... Avant... is IE... with a different skin on the surface. It still has the security holes, no matter what they claim to have fixed. (Which they CAN'T fix, they don't have the IE source code.)

Go reinstall windows, and install Avant without any windows updates to IE. See how long it takes before your computer stops functioning.

Let see...

1) They both browse web sites
2) They both display web sites
3) They both get you to the same place
4) They both have measures of security it is irrelevant which the media thinks it better I can use IE and never get a virus or spyware it's call you avoid the porn.

But look at just 1 to 3... they are technically the same thing... a web browser.

I'm not going to get into the argument because it's futile and stupid, but which government officials exactly? Forgive me but I found generally anyone 40+ is a moron with regards to computers, and most government officials are just morons.

It's true though, Firefox is the best website for porn. No pop-ups, no trojan horses. Just boobies.

1) Okay. Your powers of deduction amaze me.
2) Not the same. W3C (I believe is the acronym, it's 3 in the morning) accuracy is something IE lacks, as it uses proprietary code-handling (much like Windows which uses a whole bunch of proprietary code handling, stupid non-standard MS) while Firefox doesn't. As a result, Firefox displays pages more CORRECTLY (though not completely correctly) while IE shows them in a more erroneous manner.
3) Sure. Except sometimes Firefox handles protocols differently, and it has a built in feature that brings you to dictionary.com by typing "dict <word to be defined>" which I can't tell you how useful it is, and it has a built in tabbed browser, built in google search bar...yeah...
4) IE doesn't have any built in 'measures for security' unless you count turning off cookies, and turning off activex measures for security. It doesn't even come with a popup blocker for chrissakes until SP2, which a LOT of people have had humongous problems with.

5) Stop being ignorant, I told you. Just because they seem the same, they are not the same.

The FBI. I can't find the quote now, but I remember seeing something along the lines of a list of security measures the FBI wanted people to consider for their computers, and using Firefox wasone of them.

It's just as easy to get a virus from firefox, but nowhere near as easy to get spyware from it. Getting a virus, however, just takes stupidity in opening the wrong file from the wrong geocities site.
