First he busted the hacker that stole the code by leading him to believe that he had a job waiting for him at Valve. And now this! :D

Entrapment. How do they intend to ban people from Steam? Could you not just get another copy? An interesting approach, to say the least.
2004-11-18, 9:30 AM #6
See, if you're going to Warez a high publicity game, from now on you're going to have to wait for the sting operations to pass first....

I think it's really funny personally!

No sig.

That probably hurts 'em worse than a lawsuit, annd doesn't cost VALVe that much at all.
Steal my dreams and sell them back to me.....

I can see it popping up some warez forum thread:

Who is so stupid to use his cracked version of a game with Steam?
Sorry for the lousy German
2004-11-18, 10:59 AM #14
You'ed be suprised.... it's almost as dumb as people complainning that the CD key they downloaded of the internet for WarCraft 3 doesn't work on battlenet.
2004-11-18, 11:36 AM #15
The funny thing is, warez'ers and crackers will always find a way to beat the "unbeatable" copywright protection on both console and PC games. It's enivitable.
2004-11-18, 11:39 AM #16
but this will keep every potential warezer on their toes... its a good move on valves part.
2004-11-18, 11:40 AM #17
there is a way to bypass playing through steam (at least until a proper crack comes out) so a warezer that knows his s*** will be able to slip in under the radar.

Also, HL2 bronze isos have probably been upped to hundreds of private and public ftp servers by now. I've heard that there are even direct download http servers based in brazil where you can get anything at good speeds if you go through a brazilian proxy.

Only stupid warez newbies use easily traced p2p. There are a lot of better, safer ways to get stuff.
2004-11-18, 11:43 AM #18
oh joy

people putting that much time and effort into getting a free slice of a $40m project need shooting really... its just pure cheekiness to do that.

This isnt Entrapment. They arent forcing anyone to download warez.

Entrapment is when you force someone through blackmail or other means to do something illegal that they wouldnt have done otherwise, and then bust them for it.

Like say, actually buying the game instead of downloading it illegaly? Because that sure sounds to me like its the safest way to get the game without getting in trouble for it.

But where's the fun in that? ;)

Seriously though it's a good move by valve. Don't you need a valid CDkey to play Hl2 over steam anyway though?

I never got a CD key with my pre-loaded version.

Providing the opportunity is not entrapment. How do you think law enforcement busts drug dealers?

Edit: DSettahr wins..that'll teach me to read the thread first. ;)

No, but I do believe that a Product key is registered with your account.

Cheaptrick, someone posted a link to a Gamespot article on one of the HL2 threads this week, just search around a bit. Gabe didn't try to hire him, he just led the hacker to believe that he had a job waiting for him, so that he would go to the States where the FBI was waiting for him.

Brilliant.
Pissed Off?
2004-11-18, 8:06 PM #26
so wait... is it supposed to be an actual working copy of HL2?

Entrapment.

1. They're not the police. They have the right to ban anyone they like for any reason from their service. People that cheat and haven't paid for their game should apply, methinks...
2. Entrapment only applies if they convince someone to do something they otherwise would not have done. Simply opening up the opportunity for someone to commit a crime does not count (which is why Police can pretend to be prostitutes/drug dealers or whatever)
2004-11-18, 9:20 PM #28
Yes Jim ,it does work.

There are already offline activation cracks for both CS:S and HL2. When CS:S was leaked a while ago, Steam was cracked in about two hours, and it wasnt just the usual "can only play on cracked servers" This thing fully works.

If you are playing HL2 single-player, then this warez version is meh, cuz it comes with an offline activation, therefore you don't have to go itno STeam to verify. however, people are getting caught playing multiplayer. Apparently, steam will get your IP when you authorize, and it can tell on MP if your IP is authorized or not.

Of course, everyone has 50-60 dollars laying around whenever the next game comes out. I mean c'mon, who doesn't have that magical wallet?

Well the point is, yoshi, if you don't have the items required for your side of the trade, you don't get to make the trade.

I know, but I just hate people who are arrogant enough to think everyone can afford every game or every piece of software. Is any of it needed in the hunter-gatherer sense? No. Is a lot of it needed for an enjoyable experience? Yes.

....this would be the point where your grasping for straws.

Not really. Of course most people here wouldn't understand--you have to come from a certain level of poverty before you do.

I wouldn't have bought the game had I not gotten it free with my video card.

But in society, if you don't have the money for something, you can't have it, and being poor does not justify stealing. Just because your bank account is low does not give you the right to leave the gas station without paying, or to skip out on the bill at the restaurant. Computer games are a luxury, not an essential in life, and is you can't afford them, TS. Stealing is stealing.
2004-11-19, 4:23 PM #38
So, if you don't have the money steal it, eh Yoshi?
No one thinks that every one can afford every game. Most people probably can't. The point is, if you don't have the money, you don't get the thing, and you don't deserve the thing.
2004-11-19, 4:24 PM #39
Haha, people deserve to play it, it's the developers who don't deserve to have their paychecks stolen from them.

Oh please, I know tons of people who warez and none of them are rifling through garbage for their dinner tonight. Your line of reasoning is becoming increasingly absurd.

If people want to warez, fine, I don't care. It's when they try to justify it as some Robin Hood crusade that my eyeballs tend to come rolling out of my skull.
