I CAN'T AFFORD IT SO IT MAKES IT RIGHT TO STEAL!

If you can't afford it you don't get it simple as that there is no excuse for stealing. Tough cookies, plus if you were poverty striken you'ed be more worried about food than video games don't you think?

VALVe Software spent over $40 Million to develop Half-Life 2.

Is that the most ever for a game? Not counting "Enter the Matrix" since the extra cost for that game probably primarily comes from paying for the sets and actors.

And even if you can't afford "every piece of software" if you someone was that worked up about HL2 they'd save up for it.

I worked for over a year to buy my own PC, I worked for another six months to afford an upgrade before I came to Uni, and I worked all last summer to afford my 20gig iPod.

You want something bad enough, you damn well work for it, not pirate it.

that battlenet thread was hilarious(sp?)

I find a mild irony in the way Dj Yoshi is defending piracy to an extent, when he also argued the point that making a game takes a lot of money.

I believe you guys are missing Yoshi's point entirelly. He's not defending warezers at all, he's commenting on the often annoying statement "It's only 40 dollars, just go out and buy it!" since, if you've come from nothing, you know that 'Just 40 dollars' is a lot bigger of a number than you'd think. He's not at all saying "Therefore, it's ok to steal," he's only making statements against the assumption of 40 dollars being a small ammount of money, and how people constantly assume people can materialize cash out of thin air.

The unspoken half of that statement is that you don't actually need videogames at all. They're a luxury item. If you can't afford it, don't buy it. But don't whine about it either. That's where these people are coming from.

THANK YOU! Everyone else took my post way out of context.

I do warez, from time to time, though not much at all anymore, really. But when I WAS really into it--Gordon--I did go hungry some days because my mom was retarded. She could afford to go out and get drunk every night, afford broadband, but couldn't afford to buy some ****ing food. So watch what you say.

And no, I'm not condoning or defending it, I'm saying it's "Just 40 dollars" to you guys, but imagine the people who are less fortunate than you, but yet cannot play. Do they need to play? No. Should they have a chance to? Yes. But will they realistically have a chance to? No. If I'm not mistaken, this is part of the mentality behind Child's Play.

Hmm, I think Page_Wizard got everyone a little too worked up in the other thread concerning warez and steam.

It may be $40 where you are, but not all warezers come from america, its about the equivalent of $80 over here
nope.

You should warez at all... if everyone would stop stealing it the prices of video games would go down because they wouldn't have to spend money making all the anti theift software.

you don't know that. People are greedy, they're going to roll you for all they can, piracy or not.

Lowering the prices of games would help to stop piracy. Most people take stuff b/c its too expensive, but there are those that get a hard-on from downloading all they can. It's their way of f***ing with the man.

You might want to consider not insulting someone when they point out something you are doing wrong. If you bothered to read my thread which I doubt you did I have been trying to be better around here. Please stop it, before you hurt yourself.

You said that about the music industry too, yet they are still allowing me to legally download an unlimited amount of music for only $2.99 a month.

Video game prices aren't any different that before people started warez stuff online.

True, but warez has been around longer than you think. I'm talking there was an active Commodore 64 warez community. But of course, back then, the warez communities were so small, and they've actually stayed about the same, I'd guess, talking in ratio of retail buyers to warezers.

I know, but it wasn't quite as easy to do back then and it wasn't as acceptable.

I think it was actually more acceptable in the past. Very few people I know actually had legal copies of the games they had for their various BBC/Commodore/Spectrum systems. Most game developers were hobbyists and quite liked it if their games got widely distributed. It's only since videogames entered the mainstream and became a real industry that getting illegal copies of games has become less accepted.

warez is for fools, steal hard copies from friends and shops!
2004-11-21, 11:29 PM #64
The warez community for Commodore 64 was small? Are you sure about that?
BAck in the day of C64 everyone I new had literraly hundreds and hundreds of pirated games.
I always thought the C64 as the worlds most pirated... thingy...
It was so easy, anyone could do it, hell I was 5 and I was doing it!

A subtle point that most people seem to be missing: If HL2 cost $40 million to produce, and the average copy runs $40, that means 1 million people will have to buy it before the game even turns a profit.

It took a ton of people a lot of time and energy to create this game. You kids probably think game development is all beanbag chairs and playing video games. It's not, it's 14 hour days 7 days a week for 3 years. Pirating games is not cool and anybody who brags about it or claims they're entitled to do it deserves to have their throat cut.
2004-11-22, 11:59 AM #66
That was not a brag, but a summation of the state of warez. I agree with you whole-heartedly, especially about people who actually think they deserve to pirate.
