The way you fight says a lot about you....

How do you prefer to fight in fps games? Granted, most of us don't follow one type exclusively, but which category do yo fit into the most? What is your preferred way of combat out of the following types below:

Type 1: I like getting my hands dirty. I prefer to engage the enemy at close to point-blank range with meelee weapons like swords, pistols, or knives, or even my fists. The best way to kill someone is to beat, stab, or slash them to death.

Type 2: I like engaging the enemy at medium range with medium-powered weapons. Pretty much anything will do, as long as it shoots fast and turns anything in its path to swiss cheese. Accuracy is not too important. My mp5 or any other machine gun/assault rifle is my best friend. A minigun is best of all.

Type 3: I like anything that explodes. I like to run around maps lobbing grenades, firing rockets, or placing charges. I then retreat and wait for the bombs to do their work. In multiplayer games, people hate me.

Type 4: I like heavy weapons, (like the BFG10k or the strongest weapon in any particular game) and I run around the game blowing the f***ing s*** out of everything that moves. As far as i'm concerned, the best defense is the strongest offense. In multiplayer games, people REALLY hate me.

Type 5: I like exotic weapons. It pleases me to kill enemies as creatively as possible. Games that have weapons ranging from unusual to totally depraved are my favourite.

Type 6: I like to camp someplace and pick off enemies one at a time with a sniper weapon. I like surgical accuracy above all else. Since I rarely show myself, a fast rate of fire is not too important. In SP, the AI never sees me, and in MP, by the time people find me, I've already popped their head. Other players want to hunt me down and cut me up out of pure spite.

Type 7: I'm a filthy cheater. I like to run around the games in god mode, knowing that nothing can hurt me. B/c of this, I like to blow people away with the best weapons. Ammo is not important, b/c i can always spawn more. B/c of this, I'm helpless in multiplayer and I routinely get my a** handed to me.

Type 8: I like to sneak around and ambush people. I dodge from corner to dark corner, never staying in one place for too long. Accurate weapons are a must, as I must strike quickly and hide again. Most enemies never see me. I'm kind of like a sniper, but not really, since I like to remain mobile. I'm more like an assassin. A silenced gun is my best friend in multiplayer maps. In SP, the AI is usually too stupid to see me.

Type 9: I use anything I can get my hands on. I'm really quite versatile.

Type 10: I'm always the one to rush blindly into conflict. Often, I'm the only one who does this, and on co-op missions, the rest of my team just stays behind. Thanks, guys.

Did I miss any types? If so, bring it up and I'll add them later.

I'm a type 2. I know the value of taking cover and staying mobile, but I like to gun things down quickly.

I'm kindov a 2 and 8 hybrid.

3, 3 and more 3! In games where 3 is not available, 8. 2 on rare occasions when I'm feeling more reckless.

I'm another type - I use whatever I can get my hands on, and mainly attack. I only run away when I know for a fact there's no other option. eg in JK, if I'd spawned near a bowcaster, despite the fact its not a favourite of mine, I'd charge it to full and chase down anybody I saw whilst looking for something heftier...

Type 9 added.

Martyn falls into the type 9 category.

VERSATILE!! That's the word I was looking for! It was on the tip of my toungue!
2004-11-22, 10:13 AM #7
Seriously, though. People always underestimate mines, proximity mines, remote mines, and grenade. They're by far the funnest weapons to use, and they annoy the hell out of people.

Curious that you didn't put the "people hate me" next to the sniper class, surely the most hated of all in multiplayer.

I found it really hard to choose a placement for myself, I guess I'm type 9, leaning towards type 5.

Hey, maybe you should've had a poll for this?

You forgot the type that charges head on with guns blazing while the rest of his team camp on the beach and dont take any flags.

Honestly it always blows me away how careful some people are in FPS. It not about how you live sometimes, but how much preasure you can put on the other team or enemy.

polls are too anonymous.

added the hate factor to the sniper profile.

Added Type 10.

Type 1, but Type 8. I love sneaking up on people and bashing them with the butt of my gun or grenade.

Best kill in CoD: Bashing kids with smoke grenades.

Type 6. It's always nice if the enemy has no idea what hit him. Oh, yes, there's nothing better than snipe a running enemy with one shot... I dislike weapons with no scope at all, but in addition to real sniper rifles I do like assault rifles with the low level scope (4x or something) that they often have nowadays.

Definitely Type 10.

When people throw grenades they expect you to run backwards, but if you run towards them, past the grenade, you almost always catch them with their pants down and you win.

So I'm always that one guy rushing out ahead, killing everybody. It usually works pretty well and I'm usually in the top 3 players on my team.

It really depends on the game.

In RPG games like D2 or NWN, I like to go acrobatic. Light armor, martial arts, small and light weapons.

In UT2K4 or similar games I play very agressively. My aiming isn't that great but I move and jump around like crazy. (I'm left handed, so my best hand is on the movement keys)

In any games where you can sneak, I sneak. (rainbow six comes to mind). Nothing more satisfying than peaking out of a dark corner with a silenced MK23 and take down someone with a little *tic*, and they don't have any idea where it's coming from.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.
2004-11-22, 10:44 AM #15
Type 4. The best way to kill enemies is get them in a close spot and fire a redeemer at them.
Stuff
2004-11-22, 10:50 AM #16
Type 9 mostly, although I stay away from long range weapons. I prefer short-range guns like shotguns.

2004-11-22, 10:51 AM #17
a cross between type 1 and type 5
2004-11-22, 11:00 AM #18
Type 8: Silent n' Deadly. Mobility is the key.

Mid-ground guerilla skirmisher. Non-scoped semi-auto and bolt-action rifles, deployable mortars and MG's work too if I'm planning on sticking around. Rate of fire doesn't matter. Make my shots count. Harassing the main base defenders. Hold my fire and let them walk past me and peg them when their backs are turned. Team up with like-minded loonies, stick together. Avoid bottlenecks with no room to maneuver. Avoid confrontation if possible until you have the upper hand. Relocate after every kill when someone was looking in your direction, relocate ever 2 minutes anyhow just to be safe.
If it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.

3 5 7 or 8 depending on the circumstances.

I tend to have a very strong weakness for monks when theyre available [eg nwn], i played a pretty brilliant acrobat in Morrowding before i got suicidally bored of it.

Assassin would have to be my favourite D2 class [*does the katar-dance*], and come to think of it i am one of those truly depraved people who tends to frequently play Voldo in Soul Calibur/2, however i have a strong affinity to Talim [tonfa tonfa whee] and Sieung Mina [i've had a naginata-fixation ever since playing Bushido Blade many years ago].

But sometimes there's nothing quite like glassing a map with orbital bombardments, or madly placing tripmines on every available surface.

In Deus Ex i tend to go pretty much the whole game with the wrist crossbow and dragon sword, combined with the sole purpose of the sniper rifle [taking out cameras and alarm buttons], and grenades for those pesky sentry drones.

Then in things like AvP i absolutely adore Alien and Predator, Pred has sooo many diabolicious toys to play with, nothing like speargunning people's heads off for instance, or hurling crazy-sharp discs around a crowded room. But alien is truly gleeful as well, very few things match up to running around on the ceiling, hanging off of light fixtures and biting the heads off of unsuspecting civilians.

But my first mistress will always be the Thief games. I developed this masterful plan in Thief 1 wherein i could go the entire game without taking any damage [even from falling], never killing or knocking anything out [with the possible exception of spiders], and never being seen and barely heard. It took a great many quicksaves but eventually i was victorious, and continued the tradition in Thief 2 [aside for a few areas where you /had/ to knock out someone, or areas where it was basically impossible not to be loudly heard].

More recently, when replaying Thief 1, i even developed this masterful maneuver, wherein i realized that the single most useful item in the game was an unconscious body, it allows one to fall from basically any distance and land completely silently, presuming you can aim well and land on top of it :o
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

I just think polls are great for summing up the overall choices of styles for everyone.
People still discuss whats going on after they click on the poll, except those who can't be bothered getting into a conversation about it, and they won't be posting anyway.
Cool addition to the sniper type btw :D

Well if I look at my weapon stats in JO, I have pretty much equal kills with every weapon except for the stun prod and DEMP (which is only useful on one map).

It really depends on the game and the map in a specific game. In some maps, I go sniper and in others, I'm taking an assault approach, so type 2 and type 6 (I play BF:V and DC for BF:1942)

In JO you are always running out of ammo for everything but the blaster. I think that makes the stats so equal.

I was just very good at JO :p

The weapons in JO (except stun prod and DEMP) were very well balanced, it was just as easy to get a kill with the bryar as it was any of the power weapons. I would normally go around with the bryar as my main weapon and switch to the others when the situation deemed it necessary.

Type 1, so long as that weapon is a sword or pistol.

In my experience, people hate type 9s more than any other. Everyone finds different attacks more annoying, you can annoy everyone on the server by just being good at everything.

I like mid range attacking... but if i'm low on ammo or i know i most likely won't survive an attack, I charge them and throw everything I have at them and if i survive my assault, I retreat to more ammo...

in JA or JO, the single saberist usualy do the tried and true attack, retreat, attack retreat... hopefully they get a good hit and retreat before they get hit back... not me! I charge at them with a non stop assault, don't give them time to counter and stick close to them, if they retreat, head 'em off at the pass and slice 'em.

Type 10 when playing maps with a lot of people, such as CTF. Type 2 in most cases in other maps with small to medium amount of people.

8 or 10, depending on game. CoOp I tend to go 10, whilst when outnumbered or even if its even in MP I'll go with 8.

COD: 2

Farcry: 6

D3: 1 :) <3 Beserk

Mostly anything else: 1 / 3. Nothing beats a set up of a hallway with det packs hidden at the front of a slide thingie, sending them into the slide, turning the corner and shot into a room full of trip mines....

I use vehicles to kill people.

I've said it before many times and I'll say it again: The cheapest thing I've ever done in a FPS game is use a Starfighter to take down someone with an energy sword.
2004-11-22, 2:02 PM #37
In JA, detonation packs own all. My two favorite tactics are to hide one or two of them in a bottleneck, then round the corner, go into 3rd person view, and wait for the prey to enter the trap. The never have any idea it's coming. It's a free kill, basically. My all-time favorite is to find a huge clump of dorky saberists, force jump over them while dropping det packs, run off a little distance, and detonate. Sometimes I can land 3 or 4 kills this way. All the other guns in JA just suck, except for perhaps the repeater.

2/8/9/10 the best way to die is runing blindly in to 3 or 4 snipers

but depends on the game

(edit) ill usually get one or two of them:D

In MP I'm a type 10. I usually have high kills, but high deaths as well.
