Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
2004-11-23, 2:01 AM #1
It was released last Wednesday, and I have been playing it since Sunday. It's quite good. Very pretty. It doesn't feel like Metal Gear Solid, because instead of using a radar to help the player hide behind boxes, one must use camoflauge to hide in tall grass and bushes (and also that it takes places in the 1960s). The jungle environments are large and open, not indoors as in the other two MGS games.

The game is significantly longer than the other two; I've got 8 hours so far, and have only fought two bosses (out of 7). The original Metal Gear Solid would have been completed by this time. One boss I didn't actually see die, and knowing this series, I bet I'll fight him again. People in these games have a habit of coming back if you don't see their corpse (even then, a corpse isn't a sure indication).

Has anyone else been playing it, or did it get drowned out in the Half-Life 2/Halo 2 hype like Metroid Prime 2? Thus far, I would hazard to say this is the best of the three MGS games (and that's really saying something).

Ah... you mean Ocelot.... yeah he isn't supposed to die, he shows up a lot older in the other 2 metal gear solid games. Also, every time I see the Sorrow, he freaks me out; gives you that feeling of Psycho Mantis.

So far I'm enjoying this game. I really like the addition of being able to see through Snake's eyes in certain cutscenes(Button press required); of course leading to some suggestive scenes *cough*. Anyways, I strongly suggest everyone to try this game out. It's a lot of fun.

BTW, it did get somewhat drowned out by HL2/Halo 2/San Andreas.
No sig.

WHENS IT OUT IN SCOTLAND!

In other news, i completed san andreas last night
nope.

I'm getting it for Christmas. I want to finish my other games first like San Andreas. Metroid Prime 2 won't be drowning out MGS3 considering that the userbase for the Gamecube isn't that high compare to the other two.

If they screw it up like they did MGS2, so help me god their balls are mine.

I just started up a new game of MGS2 to prepare for MGS3, and I can't frickin wait. MGS2 is my favorite game of all time, hands down. The only one that comes close is GTA, and there is still a good deal of seperation. MGS has the characters, the graphics, the gampleay, the whole works. Now, in Snake Eater, not only do we actually get to play as Snake the whole time(thank god for thaqt), the thing takes place outdoors, in the jungle. It does not get any better than that. I've been watching my brother play, and it is tough not to put a bag over his head, wait til the arms stop moving, and steal his PS2. Oh god I hope buck doesn't read this.........

BANNED Anyways...

MGS 3 owns....simple as that

The graphics, the voice acting, the gameplay, the bosses (The End is freaken awesome), and Eva.....she's hawt

But yeah, the game is freaken amazing. The grahpics are just...drop-dead gorgeous. It's amazing to see you wade in the water and all the refelctions from every light source, all the ripples. It's amazing. To me, it isn't NEARLY as cutscenes as MGS2 (although I enjoyed thorughly the cutscens in MGS2). Buy this game, you have to play it. Story is great, best voice acting in any game, can't say enough. Just simply amazing.

Here is a shot of the water sequence I was talking about. however, when I played it, it was night, with the moon shining, and russins on these little hovering things...it looked amazing. This is still pretty damn good though. (I tmight look a bit crapy cuz I accidentally compressed the Jpeg a bit too much)

I'm just the opposite. I hate splinter cell. But see, MGS had a great, great, epic story. Not just gameplay (though that was good too)

The only thing I thought was lacking in MGS was camera control with the right analog, and now, that has been fixed. HOORAY!

I beat it this morning (3:30am, who needs sleep?). It's quite good. It took me 19.5 hours.

The gameplay is great, and the story is on par with the convoluted, mixed-up story of the previous games. My only gripes are that the areas and bosses aren't very memorable (most of them are only encountered once or twice), and that it doesn't answer very many of the questions I had from MGS:2 (although it does explain who The Patriots are, but not the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo bit).

In the origninal "Solid" game, I knew all the areas, where to hide, and all the little secrets. This game takes place in a jungle, so much of the time is spent crawling through foliage without knowing where you're going, just head north. There are scores of these areas, each with funky Russian names that I can't remember.

Also, the bosses are not nearly as great as those in MGS. They can't compare to Vulcan Raven, Psycho Mantis, or Liquid Snake. The main villian doesn't come across as very villainous, and I didn;t get a sense of urgency about the mission. That's due in part to the fact that it's a prequel, so I already know who lives, who dies, and who is irrevelant to the series.

It's pretty cool seeing just why The Big Boss gets his title, and how he loses his eye.

I knew about Ocelot, when I was talking about bosses, I was refering to The Pain (that bee guy). I didn't see him die because of the explosion; I didn't know all the bosses blew up like that. Also, fighting The End was pretty fun, and that ghost river was creepy. It took me three tries to figure out how to get past it (it got to the point where I started to get mad). Also, (for those who have beaten it) what significance does EVA play to the future of the series? Does she do anything later? I don't recall hearing anything about her.(

[Also, my ranking upon completion was Crocodile]

any plans for it on the 'box????

i have mgs2 substance and beat mgs1 in 2 days for ps1 but i dont have either game anymore

anyone else think the vamp wiping out the navy seals was quite possibly the coolest cutscene in video game history???
2004-11-24, 5:28 PM #23
I never really gotten into "Splinter Cell" because it just didn't have those cool characters like the MGS series does.

No, I think the Cyborg Ninja killing the guards in MGS is cooler.

You sure? I read from a magazine review that the boss fights rival that of MGS. There are also multiple ways to kill each boss (the one against the End takes over an hour from what I read).

I can't wait till Christmas to play this game....hopefully by then I'm done with San Andreas.

The End does really take forever. Thermal Goggles are a big help though. IF you don't have them, it's tough, since his camoflauge is like...uber.

I wasn't really interested in the new metal gear, since the last one put me off so much (too easy, too simple, too bleh) but this one does seem pretty impressive, I may have to check it out.

In the warehouse, bottom floor, in the deadend hallway toward the bottom of the screen, left side, in the corner, in the dark. Took me forever to find them.

Also, did any of you notice the strange things EVA says if you knock her out with a tranquilizer? .

Post any and all questions, hints, or easter eggs. We know they're in there, we just have to find them.

Just beat the game...

Oh my god, the whole last "Act" of this game is so freaken amazing. Probably my most intense gaming experience ever.

Haha, this is totally hilarious:
After you are tortured, DO NOT REMOVE THE TRANSMITTER from your shoulder. Continue on, past The Sorrow, until you get to the waterfall. Watch the cutscene (you remember it, it's your favorite one, you pervert), but now there is an extra clip added in. It's hilarious, worth replaying a few parts to see. Hopefully you have a gamesave in the general area; you should, if you're an experienced Metal Gear player.

The warehouse you first meet Eva and that Russian scientist? If so I'm screwed. I am already in the caves and not sure if I can get back there or not. I just beat Ocelot.

no, you'll get em later. i just beat The Sorrow, that was a funny boss battle at times. also, If you say you like MGS2 in the beginnin you get that cool mask;-). but the thermal goggles are later, and look out for the shot gun at the end of the cave, pretty good stuff.

Yeah, I just beat The Pain, and I found the shot gun. I used it to beat him. I also found the snow gear. I just now exited the cave and saw the cut scene where it shows The Fear running off into the woods. Is that the warehouse? I'm about to get back to playing it and see if it is.

Ok I got the goggles, both thermal and night vision.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

I just beat The End. Took me 45 minutes, and yeah, those thermal goggles came in quite handy. I used them to follow his foot prints around. At one point I snuck up behind him and pulled out the 12 guage. I took off more than half is health right there.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

That's basically what I did thrawn. Soemtiems, I would just stand still, wait for him to come up to me, let him shoot me point blank, then I would just chase afer him.

He came up to you? Christ, the only time I ever saw him move was when I pulled out the 12 guage. I spotted him again and was trying to sneak up but he threw a flash bang and ran off. So after that I said screw it, found him and shot him in the back of the head from like 10 feet away. Took a while too cause I was crawling from the far right part of the North Jungle to the Far left part of the West Jungle, down to the bottom of the West, then back to the right part of the West Jungle before I finally spotted him.

It was really freaky. I was laying crouching, looking through my sniper rifle with the thermal goggles on. I start hearing footsteps...hearing grass being pushed around, then suddenley...."BAM!!!!!!!" It scared the hell out of me. THen I proceeded to chase him down with my Ak47 and took care of him, and his damn parrot. If you beat him non-lethally, you get his special tranquilizer sniper. Also, if you hold him up 3 times, you get his special camo, which gives you like 100% camo.

What did you all think of the torture scene? Man that was nasty. I'm also including the part where Snake is getting the crap beat out of him when sneaking into Sokolov's quarters. That scene alone in a movie could make it almost R. I was staring at the screen waiting for The Boss to cut out Snake's eyes. That would've been just awful. Even his eye getting shout out was pretty bad. That was a MUCH worse torture scene than the infamous one in Metal Gear Solid. Volgin is a real badass mutha.
