What MMORPGs have you played?
2004-11-26, 6:47 PM #1
The MMORPGs I've played are:

1) Nexus (a 16-bit like game sort of like Zelda)
2) Star Wars Galaxies
3) World of Warcraft

Out of those games, WoW is my favorite and is going to be the first MMORPG that I'm actually paying to play. The previous two games where just trial versions. Nexus was an interesting game but it didn't hold my attention for long. Star Wars Galaxies was ok but it was quite boring and too time consuming to level up your character to a decent level.

Asheron's Call
Star Wars Galaxies
City of Heroes

AC ruled, especially when all the Massassians were playing it. Definitely my best MMO experience... so far.

The less said about SWG the better. That was fun for about 5 minutes.

CoH is still pretty fun, but it has some really major flaws. Plus I dont like the new direction they're taking the game, rewarding the power-leveller.

Looking forward to Wow, maybe some time next year...

Both had it's flaws, and...well both had it's flaws. :P

BTW, did I hear somthing at GameSpy that they're making a Diablo III game? Or was it just a dream?

Asheron's Call - the orginal and still the best, likely going to play it again soon.

DaoC - I just couldn't get into it. I just dislike zones a LOT.

SWG - beautiful beautiful looking game. The landscape and cities are superb....there's just nothing interesting to do. Urban sprawl was ridiculous.

EVE Online - a lot of potential, wonderful economy and
corporation pvp setup....just not enough interesting things in the universe.

WoW - excellent game, with a interesting combat system and the best quest fun around. The world, however, is very planned and although there are no loading screens it feels 'zoned'....lacks the open exploration feel of AC or even SWG. Main reason I doubt I'll play it now it hit retail.

FFXI - Good game but it just got tedius after a while.
Ryzom (beta) - Eh...
WoW - So far, it kicks major ***.
2004-11-26, 8:56 PM #10
AC - Definitely favorite overall.

AC2 - Meh. Just meh...

DAoC - Actually liked DAoC quite a bit. Only problem is it bored me to death after a few months. Really can't see how it's held my brother's attention since it's been in beta.

SWG - Fun for a month or so. Then the lack of content really gets too painful

Shadowbane - This just really sucked...

FFXI - Good god, way too clunky to play. Menu based interface works in console RPGs, not MMORPGs...

Lineage 2 - This game entertained me for all of about 15 minutes, if that.

WoW - Definitely ranks number 2 overall for me. That's no small claim to make, and even hough I didn't play it as long as some of the others, I feel that I can safely make that claim. I definitely agree with what Jeff says about it being too zone-based though.

The fact that I could run from one end of AC's landscape to the other without having to stop and load a single thing was always a really big draw to me. Oddly enough, I still have my AC account activated at the moment, but don't really use it much...

I probably left a game or two out since I've played so many, heh. I left out Meridian 59, but I didn't play it more than a tiny amount. I also don't think it exists anymore, so well...

Asheron's Call - I had an active account as of.. yesterday when I unscubscribed. It was such a fun game back in its golden age. Perhaps its expansion pack will bring people back to the game. Its a hell of a good time if you can play with some decent people, and if you don't mind the fact that now you have to get to level 80 (which a couple 12 hour days worth of work) just to be considered low level.

Asheron's Call 2 - I enjoyed this game a fair bit when I got it. It just got to a point where I couldn't force myself to play it anymore... The same thing happened with AC1, except with AC1 the period it took me to realize I was forcing myself to play was about two and a half years, whereas AC2 it was about three weeks.

Dark Age of Camelot - This game was pretty fun, but like AC2 I just felt like I was forcing myself to play it after a week or two.

Everquest - Don't even get me started. I only played for a few hours, but I wouldn't have been able to take anymore.

Star Wars Galaxies - I really thought this game was fun for about four days... then I realized it was lame and just stopped playing... I was pretty screwed because I paid for three months of play time.. that was a mistake.

Anarchy Online - I hardly could remember this game existed... Anyway back when I played it was after its terrible release day, they had a trial to try and get back all of their members. I played for a day or two and just found it was too difficult to get involved in the game.

I'm really looking forward to sinking my teeth into WoW... altough I really wish they'd release Asheron's Call 1.5.. give AC a real engine update rather than just give it a crappy 32-bit graphics update and make it DirectX9 Compatable. AC r0x0rz.

Ragnarok Online: Damn I love this game. Yeah, the quests suck, but the graphics style and fighting is just sooo much more fun than other MMO's.

FFXI: Fun until you realize that you're forced to party to get anywhere in the game. Then it sucks. I mean, partying is fun and all, but not when you HAVE to party to level, and you may spend upwards of an hour or two just to get into a party. Good graphics, good music, and meh on the controls. One last gripe: These guys need like cars or something, the traveling time is rediculous, even with a freakin bird.

WoW: Graphics were good, controls were decent, but not enough customization for my tastes.

Runescape: I can't believe I played it for as long as I did. After one day of playing, I think I was ready to stab my eyes out. Horrible lag, horrible graphics, horrible fighting, and the most confusing world/quest system. Sure it's free, but I'd rather pay $10-15 for a real game, I mean, this thing isn't even worth the time to download.

The exact same applies to me, except I got bored with City of Heroes within a month or so.. Maybe I just didn't see the scope of it all, but I just couldn't stay interested in one character's growth.
2004-11-27, 12:21 AM #23
SWG was confusing and boring and not worth the effort. WoW was just not worth the effort. Therefore, WoW wins. :)

But in all honesty, while MMORPGs can be entertaining for a while, they never hold my attention long enough for me to get myself to a decent level. I just get bored by the fact that once you level up, you fight new enemies, but the new enemies are also higher levels, so the battles are just as dangerous and take just as long, and you don't level up any faster. There's no real feeling of accomplishment, until, I suppose, you get to the highest level in the game and know that you can kick the butt of anything that moves. But by that point you probably have very little of a physical existence going for you, and kicking the butt of anything that moves in an MMORPG isn't much comfort.
2004-11-27, 3:27 PM #24
Well, no one said you had to stick with one character. If you get bored with one, make another and make sure that new one isn't the same race/class as the other.

EverQuest
Dark Age of Camelot
World of Warcraft

I love all 3 games. They each have something to offer, but WoW really does great, where the other games lack. In a sense, Blizzard took the best from EQ and DAoC and perfected it. I'll be playing WoW for awhile...
2004-11-27, 5:54 PM #26
Meh; I played Ultima Online once, then I decided that MMORPGs just weren't worth the time. No matter how long I will play, there will always be some other player who is willing to throw more of their life away, and I just cannot keep up with them. Also, I'm not too keen about all the games they expect you to shell out a monthly fee for... D***, even GunBound's now offering what's practically "cheating" to players who pay $8US/month.

Just to put it this way, I much prefer single-player RPGs for personal playing. Although I must admit Wow is the most tempting MMOG I've possibly seen yet, I still don't feel it would be everything I wanted. More or less, I would want an MMORPG equivalent of TES IV: Oblivion. Failing that, single-player RPGs, FPS-s, and both TBS and RTS are much more enjoyable for me.
Wake up, George Lucas... The Matrix has you...

AC, AC2, UO, Earth and Beyond, Shadowbane, SWG, and CoH. Feels like I'm forgetting one... ah well. Currently only have CoH because I get it free. Might go back to AC when the expansion gets here. It's just way too big of a download on my 56k.
2004-11-27, 6:30 PM #28
Asheron's Call - Cool for the first year or so, sucked hence.

Asheron's Call 2 - Sucked for the first year or so, then people stopped caring so it doesn't matter.

Anarchy Online - Sucked so much when I played it that I'll never try it again, even though I hear it's pretty awesome now.

Planetside - Massively Multiplayer Halo KotH or CTF. Which you have to pay for monthly. Haha. Yeah, thanks, moving along. Fun for a couple of days and that's about it.

Ultima Online - It was pretty awesome before the entire land area on every server became one gigantic suburb.

EverQuest - ****ing blows, pass.

...that's all of the ones I played for longer than 20 minutes, anyway.
2004-11-27, 8:57 PM #29
SWG: Oh so boring... I think I played this for about a week or two, max

FFXI: Loved this game for over a year, then got repetitious... I still like it visually a lot more than WoW

WoW: Yay! They didn't call it "wow" for nothin'!
Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

Everquest
Dark Age of Camelot
Planetside

Planetside was incredibly awesome....potentially my dream game. Boy they ruined it quick.

Dark Age of Camelot was good fun, but I got bored after a good many months.

Everquest..I never really could get into. I don't know why. I tried on multiple occasions, too.

Guild Wars - Played it for about 20 minutes. Wasn't too interested.

Everquest: Got a 30 month thing from my cousin who plays it. Played it for a couple days, but didn't feel particularly adventurous after having to slaughter helpless animals who felt no anitpathy towards me. Plus it looked terrible.

WoW: Played Beta. Was better than Everquest, but still had the "slaughtering innocents" at the lower levels. Additionally, it's exceedingly linear; you go to one area, clear out the quests and level up, then go to the next area, clear out the quests... etc, etc. The world was tiny. Why can't someone make a "to scale" MMORPG? It's just ridiculous that what are supposed to be huge cities are about 200 metres across, and are separated from each other by five minutes of woodland. Morrowind has this problem too.

Neocron. Played Beta (twice). I liked the first beta more, as it was like a full release. Played like a System Shock MMORPG, with FPS and bionics and such. Still was slaughtering rats at the lower levels... and those rats could take an obscene amount of lead in the face. The second beta was worse. I don't know what was up with it, but I was stuck in some dodgy outdoor area with not much going on.

I'm still waiting for an MMORPG that:

- Is to scale.
- doesn't involve slaughtering wildlife.
- involves some sort of roleplaying.
- has interesting stuff to do, so you don't feel the need to go out and level all the time.

Well, except for the last one that is pretty much City of Heroes.

- The entire game world is just one big city, different zones are just different parts of the city. For eg. there's a financial district, town hall, cemetry, docks, central park, and slums.
- You slaughter criminals, not wildlife.
- There are a few roleplayers who get into the whole protecting citizens thing.
- Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing to do other than run around arresting criminals. It's definitely one of the (if not the) major flaws with the game.

Yes, we should all feel bad for the fake pixilated 3d animals.

Maybe I'm just a jerk..but...the animals...they.are.fake.

If you lived back in the days of the...well back in the day and the only way to survive was to kill REAL animals I might understand you feeling bad for the animals...but these are games, and in these games you are allowed to kill little boxy 3d animimimiminals, you don't have to...but you can I guess if you want. (I think in WoW beta I killed a bagillion fuzzies, because my skill was skinning :p Good money leather gives...)

I enjoy burning critters with unnecessary spells in FFXI, plus, it's got a myriad of quests to have fun with.

SWG? Haven't polayed it, but I think I'll like it, despite me being a Massassian.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

I like free MMORPG's with at least some kind of 3d graphics... Somewhat better than what Runescape has. But I cant find many anymore.

Was that runescape 1 or 2? 2's graphics are actually 3D, they're not too bad. The fighting is a whole lot better. Magic is a whole lot better. Ranged is a fricking huge lot better. I've never thought the game world or the quests were confusing. There are only like 2 quests that are confusing, and you probably won't get those after one day.

Wait... Horrible lag? How bad is your computer? I've got a 56k and the 1st and the 2nd never lagged a crazy amount.
