And I'm very impressed so far.

However, I have a question/problem:

1. I'm having trouble remaping the keys. I want to use the up, down, left and right keys (like other games) . Every time I try to remap the keys, it won't let me assign these keys. (Every time I try to remap and I choose one of these keys, it detects it as "SHIFT".

How do I do this, b/c using the w, S, a, and D keys for movement is really annoying.
2004-12-02, 4:39 PM #2
So just what do you use W, A, S, and D for?

Go to C:\GAMES\Steam\SteamApps\YOUREMAIL\half-life 2\hl2\cfg and change the keys in the config.cfg manually.

You may have to put your settings in an autoexec.cfg (create a .txt file, put your setting in it, save, rename to autoexec.cfg and just leave it in the cfg folder).

Let me say however that I (and countless other players, including professionals) find the WASD configuration to be the most ideal one out there. I highly recommend switching to it even if it may be a bit annoying to start with (the close proximity of many additional keys is its greatest strength).

i don't know what your problem is. do you have any lock keys down? don't think that would do it, but you never know. i was able to map to the arrows easily enough.

Bobbert: WASD is an alternate setup preferred by many gamers. from what i've seen its to allow for a greater range of keys to use, wince the arrow keys are relatively isolated. I've never used it, i've always used arrows since my keyboard has the keys right above the arrows moved down one level (i have power, sleep, adn wake keys where the top level would be) , so they're very easy for me to use.

Just give it a try for 1 day. The ONLY difference is that its at a different location on the keyboard. I though WSAD was dumb, but its the best way no question. Plus, you have Q,E,R,F,C,X,Z and more right at your finger tips instead of having to move your hand around the keyboard.

I remember when I was using the arrow keys in games such as doom and duke but now that aim plays a larger part in games now, it would make sense to use the w,a,s,d keys in relation to the mouse. However I prefer just using one hand most of the time and bind my keys all to the mouse.
2004-12-02, 6:08 PM #8
The Arrow Keys become UNisolated when you rebind the essentials to the lower Keypad, and the keys directly to your left.

My standard setup since JK has been the following.
Arrow Keys for movement (Up=Forward, Down=Backwards, Left=Strafe Left, Right=Strafe Right)
Zero on Keypad for Secondary Fire
./Del on Keypad for Crouch
Shift for Run or Walk
Period for Reload
Space for Action
/ to Cycle through weapons (Or I use the mouse wheel. Or if that's overly sensitive, and cycleing takes to long, the number row.)
Mouse Wheel Button for Scopes
1 on the Keypad for special actions (Grenades, melee, kicks, etc.)

That's the core really. I started playing JK in 1998. A setup such as mine, that has worked that well, for so long, can't possibly be bad. Plus, it has the benefit of seperating my movement keys from everything else. Assuring that I can't accidentially hit something. I'll take the arrow keys over WASD anyday. If you setup your controls right, having to travel to hit a key isn't a problem.

how do you do this? What are the "essentials"? I really need those keys remapped.

See, i'm left handed, and I use my right hand to maneuver /use the mouse and I use my left hand for other game functions.

my left hand doesn't like having to do both things, and as a result, gordon staggers around like a drunk, bumping into walls.

BTW, I got bronze b/c it was the best I could afford. I would normally have sprung for a better package, but

1. I hate steam and I don't like dealing with it any more than I have to

2. From what you guys have said about it, HL:source isn't that good, so it doesn't warrant the extra money i would have to spend to get it.
2004-12-02, 6:52 PM #10
If you've already played through it, Half-Life: Source is meh. The new lighting, ragdoll physics, and new sounds do make it for some new interesting experiences, but it just boils down to it being a prettier Half-Life.

You don't get DoD: Source with Bronze.

Thanks, Noble, but I use the WSAD config myself. I meant that if you don't use those keys for moving, what possible better use could there be? It made sense at the time.:o

Ok, I've found another problem:

I've made it to black mesa East, and I've just got to the elevator that the chick opens for you. I get into the elevator and I try to press the buttons, but nothing happens.

what am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to make the elevator move?
2004-12-03, 3:28 PM #25
she should get on the elevator with you and start talking more, try either reloading a different save, or running around in and out of the elevator until it works

so is it a bug in the game?

If valve spent as much time making their damn game work as they did fighting piracy, HL2 would have been perfect....

I quicksaved and loaded and it worked.

I'm now on the Highway 71 level, and its so fun to drive around smashing into ant lions. It's a nice break from the cramped quarters of the lastchapter w/ father Gregory. I almost felt sorry for some of those poor zombies as I lit them on fire or dropped cars on them.... ;)

Bwahahahh bet you didn't see that coming....

WASD is best option for speed, its easier to move and switch weapons if you find yourself in say, an ambush. As you go through HL2 I don't think you'll be able to do things fast enough with up down left right compared to WASD

Yes, you can. Read my prior post. All you have to do is rebind a few keys. I've used the arrow keys since I started playing FPS games. It hasn't failed me in any way yet. The key is to play the game awhile and learn which functions you'll be using the most, and then prioritize your setup according to that. The stuff you need to most, closest to the movement keys. It works, and if you do it right, everything can happen PLENTY fast enough.

But doesn't your arm feel cramped, since it must be at a angle the entire time you play, unlike WSAD which keeps your arm straight. It's all personal taste I supose. :)

No. It doesn't get cramped. And yes, it probably is personal taste. But I can assure you, that either way is equally good. It's all in the way you configure your controls.

Don't even start, Wolfy. The source engine has more bugs than a ****ing beehive, for chrissakes. There's been tons of problems with tons of rigs on both Vampire: Bloodlines and HL2. It's just that they're both good games, so the problems are downplayed.

HL2 doesn't have all that many bugs, really. I crashed twice in the two and a half times I've played through the game (one of which occurred when tabbing in and out multiple times). The only other bugs I've heard about would be the Alyx bug (extremely minor, one of the maps in nova prospekt sometimes spawns an extra alyx who doesn't do anything), and the Mossman bug (where she doesn't activate the lift, also fairly minor as there's an autosave right before, and all it takes is reloading an old save. I've only heard of two people who encountered this, anyway)

I visit a couple different HL2 forums (halflife2.net mainly), and massassi, and those are the only bugs I've heard of really at all. Bloodlines, on the other hand, is full of bugs.

And no, I'm not just "defending my game because I'm a fanboy", I honestly have not heard of any other bugs. I think four total (with only one being major) is fairly good for a game that hasn't even been out a month yet.

(Edit: Oh, I also remember a "bug" where the Gman didn't despawn after one of his sightings and ended up getting shot. But there was only one person who claimed to have encountered it, and it was suspect because it was in an area you can't get to without noclipping.)
Moo.
2004-12-04, 10:18 PM #39
I'm not talking about those kinds of bugs, but yes you are because you're a fanboy, or you haven't been paying attention to any threads. Stuttering problem? Not running? Disappearing models and textures? Artifacting at default clocks? I've heard about every story from friends and people online (one guy I know says parts of maps disappear and so do models)
