I'm gonna wait for PCI Express before making any major GFX Card purchases.

I'm not sure at this point, but you may be waiting for a long time...

I'll likely be waiting a year or two for a graphics upgrade. That Unreal 3 video is sweet as all hell, but I'll be happy with my 256mb 9800 Pro at the FarCry/HL2/DOOM3/STALKER graphics level for a few years.....that and spending that much money on a top end card more than every few years sends my buyers guilt into overdrive :P

I may pick it up around christmas or something. It's been a while since I spent a lot on a video card.

I as much as I hate to admit it, my Geforce 4 TI 4200 64mb can still take on any game.

Upgrading now would be stupid. I'll wait R420 comes out and the price for Nvidia's second best card drops to ~200, and then buy. (Or even by the fat 6800 for ~300, hopefully...)

The 6800U does beat the 9800XT, but look at the tradeoff:

9800 wins in my books.

I don't much care for Toms Hardware as I generally find sites like HardOCP have better quality articles, but simply screaming never to use it when ever someone posts something from there is going a bit far.

In this case the page he linked to provides detailed comparison source images, so unless they are faked I don't really see the problem with Nazgul raising the issue.

....holy **** man! That sucker eats a LOT of power. Good lord, ten years from now we may need small nuclear reactors to run our computers [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Yes, it does have 2 molar connecters on the back for power, but it doesnt use as muc has youd think. In fact, it uses less power than the 5700.

I've heard of it running fine on 420W.

Chances are my 400W, just because it's not some cheapass PS that can't actually achieve its rated output, could probably handle it.

The 480W recommendation is probably considering the fact that some people buy really crappy brand power supplies.
2004-04-15, 6:45 AM #54
Um... I only have a 400W power supply. So I can't even use this card?

I check my e-mail.

Nevertheless, I don't feel like taking a risk. My 400W power supply is made by a brand called 'icute'. I have no idea if it is good or bad.

It also depends on how many things you have installed. If you have a cd drive, a dvd drive, two hard drives, two floppies, a bunch of usb things, etc., you should probably get a new ps to run it. If you just have a couple of things, no biggie most likely. And if you don't have enough power, it doesn't hurt your machine, it just warns you that it's running in low-power mode.

I found the ATI drivers very easy too. Just ran the installer, and fixed the one bug they hadn't fixed at that time, and that was using an external AGP module. Took about 1 minute tops.
You are one of the extreme few who are able to get ati drivers working.

I'm disappointed with the ATI drivers. I *still* can't get mine to work, after 3 weeks.

I would just interject here and make some sort of statement of my disappointment of the quality of ATI's drivers . . . but Id just get flamed...

ATIs drivers may have been problematic in the past (aside from Linux drivers at the moment), but they are super now.
