Return of the King: Extended Edition
2004-12-12, 6:57 AM #1
Yes, it's out. And yes, it's freaking awesome.

The extended edition is better than the original in every concievable way. As with FotR and TTT the extra scenes are arguably not cruical to the plot, but they add a lot of character development. Also, heaps of them are lifted straight from the books, which fans have got to love.

My favourite aditon was undoubtedly the longer version of Aragorn in the Paths of the Dead. The bits from the oringal version were expanded on, and there was a nice little scene of Aragorn Legolas and Gimli capturing the fleet of corsairs. This addition made a lot more sense than cutting from the three of them surrounded by the undead to them leaping into the battle of Minas Tirith as in the original version.

Speaking of the battle of Minas Tirith, the extra hack-and-slash on the Pellenor Fields was probably my second favourite addition. Who doesnt like seeing orcs get slaughtered? There were some really cool shots left out. The battle had a better feel of coherency to it with a good sense of the Rohirrim sweeping in from one side, Aragorn and his army of the dead from the other, and the two meeting in the middle. In the original version the undead show up and that's basically the end of the battle, in the extended version if felt like a lot more happened between those two events.

Merry pledging to Theoden and Gandalf fighting the witch king have made their way from the trailer to the extended edition, although I found both those scenes a little lacking. There just wasnt much too them. Not that there really could have been much to Merry swearing allegiance, but it felt like that whole scene was lifted for the trailer. As for Gandalf and witch king, well Gandalf just kinda fell over and that was that. Very dissapointing. Should have been so much cooler. Still, nice that it is in there if nothing else.

Saruman gets his little goodbye speech with Wormtongue in tow in a scene which will either please or anger fans of the books, I'm really not sure. Personally, I liked it. Expanded the whole Palentir thing nicely, as did a scene with Aragorn and the magic bowling ball later on.

Faramir gets some much-deserved more screen time. He's one of my favourite characters so that's a good thing. There's also a proper ending for Eowyn and him, as opposed to just the one shot of them standing in a crowd together.

Sam and Frodo trudging through Mordor is expanded true to the books. Them dressing up as Orcs was entirely pointless in the original cut.

The Mouth of Sauron is in, and he's strangely freaky looking. Nice little scene, especially the way Aragorn handles it.

The only complaint I got is that the first disc ends in a very strange place. 10 minutes earlier before the actual battle of Minas Tirith started would have made so much more sense. As it was I felt like slamming the second dvd in and hoping my bladder held up for another 5 minutes in order to find a more natural break in the movie.

Fans of LotR, go get it. Now. Complete the set, then watch them all back-to-back. Remember, when your eyeballs start bleeding that means you're not sitting close enough to the tv.

Well, I haven't got much to add to the Junior Vice-President's speech. I was very happy with this last EE. I felt it was more essential than for the previous two movies, because ROTK is so action packed, so many important things are happening for so many people separated from each other. The extra 40 mins very nicely balanced the action.

Some scenes felt quite different in the EE, not only the Saruman scene in the beginning but many others as well.

And like Spork suggested, this version explains nicely why the troops of Sauron marched so fast out of the gates in the end...

The movie is divided 50-50, so it's exactly two hours of movie on both movie DVDs. There was no artistic desicions involved. I, however, had no problems with that. As long as we are not using blue ray drives, things like this happen.

It's not out here yet, but I got to rent it early at work on thursday. I thought it made the worst movie of the trilogy into the best.

That was released at the same time as RotK:EE. Very nice deal, all 3 EEs for $120, as opposed to $50 each.

$50 for each? Return of the King Extended Edition is only $24 at Walmart (I believe the other ones are $30). I can't get mine till Tuesday, but I have recently watched TT:EE again and I thought that the scene with Faramir and Boromir should have been left in.

I've bought the other two extended editions, but this is the first time I'm going to buy the collectors set. I mean, the Argonath and Gollum were ok, but a model of Minas Tirith to put on your desk is just too freakin' cool to pass up.

Figure there's no harm in knocking this thread up since it was released here yesterday.

Really liked it overall. Definitely the best extension of the three. Didn't mind the length of it at all. We started it at probably 5ish, went out to eat at the disc change, and finished at like 10-10:30.

I was really glad that they didn't try to draw out the Frodo and Sam in Mordor scenes any longer. Those were the one part that I feel definitely didn't need extended.

New dead city scene - awesome
New corsair scene - very awesome, probably my favorite
Mouth of Sauron scene - awesome, and Aragorn's opportunity to show more badassness

i'll buy it after christmas.

then i'll own all three EE.... time for an 11 hour marathon.

havent watched the first two in ages and ages so it should be entertaining.... although i think they're great movies i still cant appriciate a lot of the characters, some of the acting seems somewhat contrived (yes, i know acting itself is contrived, but a lot of the time, it just seemed forced from a lot of characters).

ah well, still an amazing story, are the extras much good? they seemed to cover a lot of tricks and techniques in the 5392057230 hours of documentaries on the first two EEs, maybe they go into more detail on some areas? meh, looking forwards to completing the collection.
2004-12-15, 12:34 PM #34
I think the extras are quite excellent. Though I doubt my criteria for "excellent" are as strict as some here might have, but they are very good nevertheless.

There is no greater gift for Lord of the Rings fans than the Extended Edition. The absence of a LOTR film this year really did leave a "gap" in my December. For three years, we were blessed to have quite possibly the greatest trilogy in cinema history. But this year, there was no LOTR to look forward to. All we have is this Extended Edition, this is the last hurrah for the films. I watched it last night, and it just reaffirmed why this film and the trilogy are my favorite movies of all time. It's funny, becuase watching the special features, and seeing all the goodbyes, gives you the LOTR fan a sense of closure, now I have to realize that it's over. It's a shame, but that's the way it goes.

I watched it last night and kept on catching myself noting all the lame CGI bits where the shadows and lighting arent quite right, or everything's too blurry.

I also thought the film was one gigantic bore, even in theaters.

My favorite is Fellowship, Two Towers comes close, but Return of the King is just kinda... drawn out... forever... and I just dont get off on battle scenes so you cant say something like "omg pellenor fields ffalhwrlaksfa!" because I dont care.

The Return of the King book > FotR, TT

The Return of the King movie = I'd rather not watch it again... unless just kept repeating the Mouth of Sauron scene.

I hated the stupid Houses of Healing scene, with that horrid song in the background, and the Mouth of Sauron and the way he moved his head reminded me too much of Jim Carrey in The Mask.
2004-12-21, 6:01 PM #40
I thought that "Mouth of Sauron" was freaky a la Hellraiser. The whole "Extended Edition" thing is very cool. I find it a little humorous how some are excited over the "boxed set" though. You realize it's simply the three movies in a not-so-exclusive slipcase, right? Anyone can buy the slipcase seperately! I imagine the ultimate "boxed set" will be on the next video format since at least each movie will be on one disc.
