Someone posted this on my "other" forum I frequent. I don't know what to say about these pics, they're ****ing incredible!

I love the way they're capable of modelling or at least very realistically simulating individual bricks in the wall. I'm sure the more techie guys will make more sense of this than me.
It's a shame I probably won't be able to run that baby when it comes out.
I think i have to go get a change of pants now.

Ha, only Valve, doom 3 will be released this year, this thing in 2006... so far... Who knows when Valve will release it.

And isn't all this stuff used allready in the Doom 3 engine, just for a machine that we can afford now?

So what's much newer? I mean all these bump mapping things and lighting things are allready in doom 3, aren't they? Perhaps the fully programable shaders... Sure it looks better, but it's in two years... perhaps than Carmack will show his next generation engine for 2008...

D3 looks awesome, but that's besides the point.

The excellent features about this engine aren't the high-poly characters with normal mapped skin cos thats territory that is being broken by current engines. The interesting bits are stuff like dynamic soft shadows, displacement mapping, advanced use of shaders, and spherical harmonic lighting.

No, definitely not used in Doom3 - displacement mapping actually alters the surface, whereas bump and normal maps just make it appear to be 3d.

Ok, I tought I had read that Doom 3 characters are modeled with high polygon count (some hundred thousands), and than a lot of polygon detail is replaced by displacement mapping... but probably I am wrong [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Add to this fact that if a 3d FPS engine can pump out this kind of detail to make some of us think it's Animation quality work, think of what your gaming experiance/interactivity within animation features is going to be. Soon will be the days that YOU have to Find Nemo...

On a side note, UT2k4 is awesome, and this...is glorious.
