OK, I'm going to stick my neck out just this one time (
) and say:
They're movies - plain and simple. Sure there are some hidden references, some obscure references some rather blatant references, but everyone and I mean
everyone is entitled to get whatever they want out of a film. Irrespective of whether you read into the Matrix storyline 5 references or 500, everyone goes away with their own thoughts on the movies. Some people watch them for pleasure - I myself enjoyed the spectacles and fancy visuals; they were neatly executed. As for the plot - as I say, it's a "levels" thing - sure we all knew (or could have guessed, once we saw that Hugo Weaving was playing Agent Smith
again) that the "Neo vs Smith" scenario would end up being the focal point; a fight that would finally place "balance" or establish some sort of equilibrium between the machines and humans; real-world and fake-world. Again, personally, I liked the issue of touching upon "how do we really know whether we're awake or still dreaming" in the original, but that's just me
.
It's this that I believe that's the important thing - films are
just films and are made for entertainment. Sure - they're made for money as well, but your average cinema-goer just wants that "movie experience" and when I watched (and now with the DVDs "watch) them, I get to re-live that experience. If the film didn't do it for you, then you simply don't watch it again; just because you didn't enjoy it, it's no reason to tell other people that the film sucks, as I believe
they are more than capable of "making up their own dam*** mind"

PS: Sorry - had to get the last quip in there
