Got it yesterday within only a few hours, averaging at 40 KB/s. Opening the ports really does make a bloody big difference. From what I've played so far, actually looks rather promising. And seeing as how it's hopefully free for a year, I just might play this one a bit longer than usual.

(and I think that the idea is pretty good. With all the new MMORPGs coming out, the chances that someone will want to get AO is pretty low. But giving someone a free-year trial, they can get sucked in, but if they want to progress their character further, they'll need the expansion packs which will cost money. Has any other MMORPG ever done any stunt like this?)
The answer is maybe.

Usually small companies like to claim its 100% free, then when the beta is over they go, OMG WE CAN'T PAY FOR ALL THIS and change it to ptp.

I was asking around a CS server last night, a guy said that everyone left AO once World of Warcraft came online. So Maybe they're just trying to get more players?

So now that I'm playing this game, I'm wholly unimpressed. Maybe it's because I've never played an MMO before, but putting your people on an island to fight bloated enemies with no weapons is the way to say "Welcome to the game, we assume you suck."

It's precisely for this reason that torrents are slow as hell.

Seriously people:
With a reasonable fast connection, you only have to be careful never to max out your upload (or it could choke your connection).

My max upload is 36 kb/s and I generally set it to 26 kb/s in BitTorrent and my DL speeds still manage to max out at my limit (340 kb/s) on good torrents.

But then again, that's not going to happen when people with broadband connections share dial-up equivalent speeds *sigh*

Wow.... I am also very unimpressed with this game.

I did manage to figure out that you start the game with a generic weapon of whatever profession you chose. I had a nice rifle.

After killing a bunch of wierd little beach animals, and wandering into some sort of a fort I quit. I mean, maybe the whole online gaming thing just isn't for me.

I'd rather be playing Call of Duty than a game where I run around a beach shooting snakes.

Well, I gave the game a bit more of a chance, and I must say, it's not all that bad. I can see how, after I decide I've leveled up enough on the island, and gotten to ATHEN, that it'd be a great game. More once I beat this big salamander and the boss rat thinger.

Man, I finally got it downloaded (I found out that our router had TWO HUNDRED ports open for Real Player for some reason, so now I just use those), and it wasn't worth it. Shoddy graphics (I swear, JK has better face textures), and, again, it starts you off fighting spiders and rats (or their 30,000 AD equivalent). At least WoW had me fighting gnolls or skeletons or something at least partially threatening.

The user interface was annoying, too, having to wait four seconds between each line of text...

Everquest did exactly this when they opened servers in UK. That's how they made an evercrack addict out of me. :-(

Okay, so now I have an apartment, some plants, a dresser, and some decent clothing...

Now what?

This whole mmorpg thing is suddenly very sick and twisted.
There doesn't seem to be any way to be 'complete.' I gave it a second chance because of what kirby said. Sure, it killed my entire afternoon (time goes by fast when you're playing this), but in the end I'm not sure it was worth it. I'm afraid this is going to be bad for my health because there doesn't seem to be anything as effective as 'wasting my time' as playing AO.

I dunno... I'm afraid of playing it now, because it kills so much of my time and in the end doesn't show much.

On the bright side, my character looks like Psycho Mantis.

Anyone who has been playing for all afternoon, or who just downloaded it and doesn't get it, or who thinks it sucks because it's kinda dumb because you start out on an island and just do stupid stuff...

From the sound of things...

this game is exactly like Star Wars Galaxies.

Once you do one thing...it's like "now what?"
Once you get a skill, it's like "ok, what do I do with it?"
You know what you do? something else. Until you get bored, waste weeks of your life, or find a group of people that draw you to it alot.

I played galaxies for months trying to find something, some "thing" that made it interesting. There's always something to explore, or continue to attempt...in the end.

YOU ACCOMPLISH NOTHING.

That's why I stopped playing SWG.

But that's just based on what I've seen so far...I could be wrong, it might not be like SWG.

I almost made a friend... but then he said goodbye and logged off.

I decided to go explore. I found myself miles from any human player and stranded in a strange ghost-town. My advice to those of you playing, don't just decide to go leave the city and follow the roads that twist through the mounains and forests for like... ever.

I made a few friends and now we've agreed to only play our characters when we were together. It's actually really nice, because partying is super fun, and makes it not just a game where you continuasly do something and accomplish nothing (Read: Diablo 2). I think it's true now, what MMO players say: It's about the community. The CONs. I'd seriously go to a con if it were within 100 miles from me. That'd be pretty kickass, actually.

I'm suddenly a bigger nerd than I was 2 days ago. :gbk:
