Too bad it doesn't have new content, like the HL Uplink demo did. :(

2004-12-22, 7:03 AM #3
IIRC, you need to install Steam to play the DEMO. Ridiculous.

I downloaded the other day... I'm glad they finally released it. Now I'll be able to see how well it runs on my computer and make a decision as to whether I should wait till I get a new computer before I purchase the full game.
2004-12-22, 9:52 AM #7
Sweet! I was wondering whether it would run on my computer, and, well, the demo does run fine at full settings! Definetely getting the silver package for christmas! :D
DO NOT WANT.

You need a STEAM account to play the demo?!? Valve must be worried about people pirating the demo, I wouldn't put it past them....

I feel like spitting in the face of whoever invented steam.

And, at 750 mb, its too big to fit on a cd, which is not good, either.

where do you get those? I've never been able to find them.
2004-12-22, 11:12 AM #12
You could try overburning a 700 mb CD, at the risk of it not being readable in other CD-ROM drives.

Or you could just use a DVD-RW. :p

Steam isn't really all that bad. I don't see what the big deal is.

Because then evil Valve is going to steal your credit card number and charge thousands of porn sites on to it, and stick gay porn onto your computer and make your mother eat chocolate pudding while singing, "Row, Row, Your Boat" and then allow the government to search your house without a warrant and arrest you for millions of years and it all would have stopped if you hadn't sacrified your freedoms to play a game.

It'd be quicker for me to work and buy the game than it would be to download the demo :p

I WAS going to download it. Then I found out how big it was, and that it was going to take 48 hours.

I promptly killed the download.

I too hate Steam. I think most of the ideas behind it are completely stupid.

downloading now, using steam.

i dont have a gripe with steam, its got funny scrollbars.

I don't know how fast the steam servers are, but I downloaded it from ati.com. It only took a few minutes for me to get it on the connection here at college.

You people make no sense. Steam is good thing because it'll lead to the eventual elimination of publishers, who, like their equivalents in other sectors of the entertainment industry, are evil leeches. The authentication thing is just a completely unobtrusive sideline.

Bah, stupid. There's loads of levels we've seen in videos that didn't make it into the game (e.g. traptown), couldn't they have at least released one of them as the demo?

Because installing software should be fun!

Steam is perfectly fine, it just seems like people don't know how to properly USE steam. As well, steam makes things more convenient, in my opinion. I'd rather download all my games.

I don't see how you could NOT know how to use Steam, there's nothing to do seeing as it does everything for you. Don't get me wrong though, I like Steam. Needing Steam for a demo though? Pretty stupid.

Yeah, like how the developers actually get more money for the game that they've put years and years of work into? What a stupid idea! I really wish that corporate executives for some faceless publisher would get the money instead, so they can buy yet another yacht for their private harbor..

seems like a waste to use a 4.7 GB disc on a 750 mb file, unless you are planning on burning other stuff along with it.

It was going to be a part of Ravenholm. But it got cut for some reason. It can be played as an HL2DM map. It's quite fun.

Where can I dl it? (traptown)

No idea. I was at a friend's LAN party, and he ran the server with that map. My best guess is that it's in the HL2 files.

reading Wolfy's sentence I can clearly understand whatever his friend played is part of the leaked version.
I can 100% gaurantee it since there arn't any extra HL2DM maps and to convert a HL2 map you'd have to have the source (leaked) or start from scratch (unlikely)

Traptown became ravenholme in order to fit into the story.
Whatever didn't make it into the final game, didn't and probably won't be released.

I personally want the robot super combine soldier. Valve had it finished but instead made the combine super soldier those guys in white ><

Actually there are tons. I've seen at least 3 map PACKS with tons of maps for HL2DM.

But you are right, it needs the leak. I'm still interested in getting the map though. I really wanted to play that one after seeing the movie for it.

Brilliant. Just brilliant.
The answer is maybe.

AK: Ravenholm == Traptown. At least a good chunk of Traptown made it into Ravenholm.

2004-12-23, 8:35 AM #39
I tried the demo last night, and it was pretty good. It runs pretty well on my antiquated computer with all the settings turned down, so I think I might purchase it without waiting for a new computer. The load times in between sections are a bit long, but nothing un-manigable. The gameplay was pretty linear, which I guess is pretty much the same throughout the game, but at least the one path you take doubles back over on itself. The gravity gun seemed to be about a hundred times more useful than any of the other weapons, but I'm told that in other parts of the game this isnt the case.
2004-12-23, 8:52 AM #40
Yes thats true, but it is still easily the most fun weapon I've ever used in an fps.
