For those of you that are unfamiliar with the term, its those tv shows with the canned laughing sound effects in the background. There were a tonne of them made in the 80s and 90s, but not so much anymore.

my favourite is Married with children.

[edit] dammit, forgot i was on the showcase. could someone move this to discussion? :o

Would say The Simpsons, but since you including the 'canned laughter' qualifier I'm gonna have to go with Black Books.

Surprised if most Americans have even heard of it...

Black Books was on Comedy Central for s short time, a few years ago. It wasn't on very long, so I didn't get to see many episodes.

About a month ago, I started watching Everybody Loves Raymond. For some reason, I've been avoiding it the whole time it was on, but I finally gave it a chance, and found it was really funny. I'd say it's my new favorite.

Another I like is Boy Meets World. I'm more of a fan of the older years (later years of high school and college).

QFT! Wait... this is an opinion question. I guess... I agree.

Seinfeld was brilliant in its use of multiple storylines that would often come together in the end in a hilarious fashion. Although sometimes it was often brilliant for just being about "nothing", I think the writing of Seinfeld is unrivaled by any new show.

Probably Seinfeld, with an honourable mention for Friends.
2005-01-01, 2:18 PM #20
That 70's show.

Seinfeld and Married with Children are kinda tied in 2nd for me. I don't think they used phony laugh tracks because each episode had different tone quality, and occasionally you get someone in the studio audience with a really annoying laugh, or someone who's just all around louder. Not to many shows used phony laugh tracks. Most use real studio audiences. Believe me; you'd know a phony laugh track if you heard it. I'm thinking of older shows like I Dream of Jeannie or Bewitched. Those were phony.

Seinfeld, and That 70's Show, by what the requirements for thread ask. Otherwise, the Simpsons would easily be number one.

Your first three do not qualify as sitcoms. Sitcom - situational comedy. Alias and Lost are both dramas and The Biggest Loser is... reality television...

Anyway, I have to say that sitcom where Hank Azaria starred. I think it was called Imagine That. Only aired twice because no one knows who Hank Azaria is. Oh he's that guy who was in Tuesdays with Morrie? or I didn't know he voiced all those characters in The Simpsons! The show had me busting up laughing. I think it only aired twice on NBC...

smash.head.against.wall

aaaaaaaaarg!! why oh why oh why?!

sitcom = situation comedy, it != canned laughter. grar.

The new series of That 70's Show is seriously painful to watch because they've added laughter after every single line, which is such a shame because it's actually pretty funny.
and also, I always saw this bizarre habit as being an American thing, but it's creeping into our programmes too. :(

I reckon the reasoning behind canned laughter is as follows:

- Laughter is infectious
- Sometimes individuals may not get the joke
- They hear laughter
- So they laugh anyway
- Everyone benefits from increased lifespan
