Yes, I see that this makes sense, but it's still annoying. Assuming your audience is incapable of working out what is funny and what isn't is seriously stupid. One of the things that I love about Scrubs is that there isn't any laughter, and so when it is funny, you hear your own laughter and notice it.

I'm not actually sure what my favourite is, so I'll just say a couple no one else has mentioned: Sliders, Azumanga Daioh.
