Brian's New (used) Jeep!
2004-04-20, 7:35 AM #41
I wouldn't mind having a toy Jeep like that, Brian. Won't be anytime soon though since I already have too many cars.

I have a '96 Grand Cherokee. I has the 5.2 liter engine. I purchased that vehicle because I needed something I could tow with and it fits the bill. Sometime within the next year or so I plan on lifting it (mildly) as well as doing some other modifications so that it will be an even more competent hauler.

My four cars average 7 cylinders each (3x8, 1x4) so I'm definitely doing my part to destroy the environment! :P

Yeah, I also own a power boat with a 351 v8 in it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] And I'm going to buy an F250 pickup (old one since I can't afford a newer one) with a 460 V8 in it. Guess I'm glad I didn't mention THAT here [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] OOPS!

I personally don't have a problem with people who own those kinds of vehicles as long as they use them for what they were intended for. I know that you do Brian.
But for a guy like the governor of California to own 4 Hummers is not only excessive but a bit irresponsible for someone in his position.
"Just because I can.", is not a reason for someone under scrutiny like that.

Evad, you have to start looking at other aspects of life other than just what car a person drives. I bet one private jet trip from CA to Washington DC uses up more fuel than all his hummers combined for their entire usable lifetime! How about people that use so much energy to heat their 9000 SQFT homes? Or their olympic sized swimming pools? How about all the people that have hot tubs and use an extra 50 bucks worth of energy a month just to keep the water warm? I guarantee they spend more on energy (50/month) than I spend on gas, or at least, the same amount.

I agree that the environment is important. Like I said, I recycle EVERYTHING I possibly can. We have more recycling from this household than we have garbage (seriously we fill 3 bins worth of recycling and half a trash can full of trash each week). Not only that, but I ingrain it into my family and my girlfriend and her kids. I don't think getting upset at people for driving SUVs is the solution (or even part of the solution). A better way would be to get people to drive more efficient ones, or forget them altogether and focus on the positive things people can do without drastically changing their lifestyles. If we focus on that, everything will eventually get better. Change can't happen overnight.

Speaking of this oil crash, I guess it's good to buy the Jeep now so I have time to play with it before the oil disappears [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

BTW: there ARE 4cylinder jeep wranglers out there (tons of 'em) so you shouldn't be busting on people for driving these when they come with very economical (and of course, WEAK) engines.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Japanese cars are well known to be the most fuel efficient (and DaimlerChrysler are the least, but Ford have made leaps and bounds going well beyond federal requirements for emissions on its trucks). I don't have a car, and I don't really have any intention of getting a car anytime soon (though I do plan to get a liscence after I turn 17, in a few days!), I like walking and we have a good bus system around here.
When I do I think I shall try to get a Japanese car.</font>

I drive an 11 year old Japanese SUV that still passes emissions testing (which is mandatory where I live) with flying colors.

Freelancer: The emissions tests are not equal for all cars. You have to pass 11 year old regulations, not the current ones. The only way you fail emissions tests is if your car puts out more emissions than was legal in the year it was created.

Oh, and regarding the "bus system": I hope you realize that even if the busses are at full capacity, assuming they weren't built within the past 10 years, it is is still putting out more pollution than if all those people were driving their own cars. Hell, around here, the busses drive around with 2 or 3 people in them and they spew out thick clouds of black greisel smoke. And a stained poster hangs off the back saying, "38 passengers, 1 tail pipe" as if it's running clean or something. Not only that, about a dozen of them sit at the ferry terminal with their engines on and their oil leaking all over the ground, which of course flows into the Puget Sound which is about 10 feet away as soon as it rains.

Which makes me think of another point: If your 4cyl is leaking oil, like a lot of the ones that are 10 years old or older, you realize that you're polluting worse than most newer SUVs, right? I wish everyone would fix their oil leaks!!
