What OS do you use?
2005-01-29, 9:27 PM #1
Right now, I use Windows XP, but soon, oh so very soon, I shall be running debian 3.0.
And it shall be awesome.
This thread is also a joint, how do I get WoW to run in linux?
2005-01-29, 9:29 PM #2
Don't bother with Wine or WineX... it's easier to just dual boot for games.

And I use Windows XP Home. Usually I install Linux over the summer and then go back to Windows for school (because Linux is just undependable to me).
That painting was a gift, Todd. I'm taking it with me.

I'll take this opportunity to complain, yet again, how Windows XP has continually sabotaged my attempts to install linux (it lets me use cygwin, but only grudgingly). First time I tried installing it, I was going to install XP 64-bit and partition at the same time, and then dual-boot with linux. However, the installer refused to recognize that I had a hard drive. So then I got the idea to burn a liveCD. Well, wouldn't you know it, as soon as my computer saw what I was doing, it shut down not one, but BOTH of my CD burners. I eventually fixed them to the point where they will burn DVDs, data CDs, audio CDs, video CDs, etc... everything EXCEPT for cd images.

So I'm pretty much stuck with XP. I suppose it's for the better; all I do is play games anyways, so I don't need an extra OS cluttering up the hard drive.

I'm running XP Pro SP1 for now. Before I go to college next year, I'm going to slap together a kick-*** mac, and use that for school. I don't care what people say: Mac > Windows when it comes to simple surfing, word processing, video, and music editing. I'll have this box in the corner for gaming.

The main thing I don't like about macs is they are so damn expensive and for what you pay for it, you could get a great PC that could probably do anything the mac could do just as well for less money.

I'd update the desktop to SP2, but I'm too lazy, and not there for half the year.

Gentoo of course, Enlightenment being the shell of choice.

Before Gentoo i used slack for a while, and really pretty much hated it the whole time. I've fooled around a bit with suse as well, on other people's boxen, and it seems decent, though seems a bit monolithic and fisher-pricey for my tastes.

When i need to go to windows for some reason [eg playing kotor over winter break], i run xp corporate with blackbox4win as my shell.

As to WoW on linux, i'm pretty sure it can be done. There are some threads on the gentoo forums about it i think, so that might be a place to look. The vast majority of my gaming is all text-based though [aside for things like Thief/SS2], so i can't be a huge help beyond that.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

I feel your pain, Stinkywrix. I am actively trying to install Debian Woody (2.2 kernel).
I've got everything installed but I rely on wireless up here in my room and I can't figure out how to install new drivers.(Any help guys?) Right now I'm running off the Best Internet Setup ever.
WIRELESS ROUTER --- wireless connection --- LAPTOP ACTING AS DHCP SERVER --- hard ethernet link --- MY BOX
I plan to use Debian for most stuff and switch over to Windows XP SP1 for the occaisional game.

By the way, Stinkywrix, I installed successfully using only Binary CD-1, if that helps.

Desktop: Windows 2000 (gaming) and Debian Sid (installed and updated Friday night. Wow, I'm such a loser.)

Laptop: Windows XP Pro SP1 and Ubuntu linux. Ubuntu did a great job of picking up my built-in wireless card. After adding Hoary Hedgehog sources to apt, I'm loving my Ubuntu. I think I'm even getting used to Gnome, and that's coming from a major KDE fan.

[Edit]I keep Windows XP on the Laptop for programs such as National Instruments' LABVIEW, which I need for programming for the solar car. Otherwise, it'd be linux entirely.

win2k and fedora core2 (66/33).

Win2k (Most of the time) / Gentoo (When Win2k dies, not that uncommon).

I love Gentoo, but I do not think Linux is fully ready to be my main OS just yet. Until they find a way to get 3D acceleration on dual monitors working well, and rock solid NTFS support, I won't be using it as my main OS.

That's not to say it doesn't come in handy when Win2k refuses to boot, or something odd happens.

I also run a 400mhz celeron server box. It's also running Gentoo, on the latest 2.6 kernel. It is quite handy for doing simple linux stuff, or when I need something compiled for a friend. It also runs DHCP and firewall for the house. It's headless, although I'd like to get the sound card working in it, I don't think it is going to happen.

CM - there's a commercial program that allows you to read/write NTFS partitions in Linux, but damn it I can't remember the name right now.

My desktop: Windows XP Pro SP2 and Gentoo (2.6.10 dev kernel)
My laptop: Windows XP Pro SP2 and Gentoo (2.6.10 dev kernel)
My emu-box: Gentoo (2.6.9 dev kernel), controlled using SSH.

The only reason I still have Windows XP on my laptop is for a couple games that I can't get running under Linux, and my school's stupid VPN network. If ever I could find a graphical front-end to OpenVPN, I'd be happier than a pig in ****.
2005-01-30, 7:19 AM #38
Gentoo on main box.
I've also got an FC3 box at home, and I'm going to experiment with FreeBSD on a really old machine.

Well, I dual boot Windows XP Home and Ubuntu Linux, however, Windows has problems with my ATI video card, so I am never in Windows.

Windows XP Pro, for both my computers. I know how to tweak it so its pretty much a fined tuned-Win2k. ;)

On my old rig which has 256MB of RAM, it boots up with over 200MB+ of RAM. My good comp which has 768MB, boots up with 630MB+.
