My desktop at work. (it's 1280x1024)
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

Alright my fellow Gentoo user, be so kind as to be telling me how you got your console on the desktop like that, and what you're using for the weather.

Oh, and where did you get that Xfce theme?

I don't understand... Why do you need the weather on your desktop? Does it require THAT much effort to get out of your chair and look out the window, or perhaps stick your head out the door?

If I need any specifics on weather, I just power up the TV on the computer. Instant weather channel. Otherwise, looking out a window is good enough for me.

having a 5 day forecast always on hand is handy when you do other things besides be on the computer. It makes making plans easy. I usually need to check a forecast at least once or twice a day

Doesn't the Weather Channel do one every 10 minutes?

Granted, you might have to wait 10 minutes to see it, but they do have one fairly frequently.

They call it Local on the 8's. Only time you can't catch it is when Storm Stories is on, 8-9 pm eastern and 11-midnight eastern time.

I'm not huge on TV. Usually I have blaring music on from the computer, and I don't want to be arsed to turn on the TV and listen. Besides, pc weather is on demand!

OMFQ I'M A MAC WHORE!!!!111seven

Edit: updated

Somehow, no matter how many times i see shots of kde desktops, i can't do anything except marvel at the irony of calling /other/ shells fugly. Nothing personal, just.. i don't understand how anyone can think it looks good.

Shintock, generally by setting the eterm window to transparent and then setting the borderstyle to none.

For a normal bordered transparent eterm, i have a shell script to execute a randomly tinted window. Now for some reason that so far has eluded me, a few weeks ago it stopped including the green tinting at all, so they only come up in shades of blue and purple. It's probably an incredibly obvious problem that i'm just missing and being dense, but if anyone [eg gbk] can spot it i would be grateful:
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
$geometry = "80x27";
$shade = 10;
$font = "Fixed";
$r = int rand 255;
$g = int rand 255;
$b = int rand 255;
$tint = "0x".sprintf("%X", $r).sprintf("%X", $g).sprintf("%X", $b);

$name = "Eterm R".$r." G".$g." B".$b." tinted";
$options = "-b black --geometry $geometry --title \\'$name\\' --name \\'$name\\' --trans --shade $shade
--tint $tint --scrollbar yes --itrans -F $font";
exec( "Eterm -t xterm $options &" )

[linebreak for sake of scrolling]

Simbachu, i meant to say this last time this thread came around, but your desktop background is totally sexy, way clean and simple, but it works so well.

As to mine, which i've shown before but y'know. Gentoo + E + modified wireframe theme, it looks a wee bit wonky from the compression and resizing. [the top console in which i'm mudding incidentally drops down at a hotkey press ala q3a for instance]:

Code looks fine to me... :confused:

Try commenting out the exec line and adding this instead;

Code:
print $tint, "\n";

If the values it prints contain green, then the problem isnt with the perl script.
And when the moment is right, I'm gonna fly a kite.

Yeah, I had the same problem, but then I upgraded to 1 gig of RAM and tried ObjectBar again, and everything's fine now. I usually have it to auto-hide anyways, all the programs I access regularly are in my dock (not like in that screenshot, I have nothing on my desktop other than the folders).
2005-02-03, 8:22 AM #69
Oh yeah, I was gonna buy somr RAM recently... should really get round to it, I've only got 256, and 64 of that's tied up with the video memory :(

2005-02-03, 2:10 PM #72
Thanks gbk, i should have thought of that actually.

The problem seems to have been a weird bug which arose in eterm 0.9.3 where the green value for tinting was ignored, but i just ugpraded to 0.9.4 from cvs and it all works again.
Also, I can kill you with my brain.

Eterm -x -0 -O --buttonbar no --scrollbar no --no-cursor yes --geometry 100x50+1-25 --shade 0

That's how I made it

And the weather thing is a gdesklet called iWeather - and this is the version iWeatherBig :) The XFCE4.2 theme is "agua" - and it was there after i emerged xfce42
