Best free HTML Editor?

I need to whip up a ton of tables and I don't feel like typing them all out. Whats a good editor to use aside from craptastic Frontpage?

Yeah, how's this for odd? My parents haven't been the least bit interested in my love-life my entire life, and now that prom is soon my Dad all of a sudden seems concerned that if I don't find a date and go it will mean I'm a social failure.
I don't get it... I accepted that fact a long time ago, why is he just now realizing it?

^^ Indeed it is. PHP is extremely easy to learn, especially if you have any background in any computer langauge (even if its just BASIC).

I personally use Crimson Editor for writing all of my php and html.

I used to use the original Homesite, v1.2 ever since 1997. I recently switched to Macromedia Homesite 5.

I think i have v1.2 hosted on my site.. it fits on a floppy disk, yet is quite powerful. I'll see if I can find it and then post a link.

I myself enjoy Editplus, though I haven't gotten much of a chance to use it.

You can switch between many languages, and it knows the syntax for all of them. It's fun.

Perl is good, very good. Maybe instead of us PHP, Perl, and Python people arguing we should just unite and fight the evil that is ASP.

I have to agree Scintilla is a very good free editor for editing web based languages such as Actionscript, Javascript, PHP, MySQL. The only reason I use it is because of it is lightweight. Though it doesn't come close to Dreamweaver's power. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] I still believe Dreamweaver is the best investment if your doing lots of HTML and or integration with other language and web apps. For everything else I juse use VC++ 6 (I know its old but I like it).

Edit Pad Lite is free. Pro edition has a few more features, but cost money.

I use Edit Pad Lite.

I know, Darth, you think you like Notepad because its "lightweight".. There are replacements for Notepad that are just as lightweight, NotepadX for example...

I'm old school and like writing all of my code straight and plain, so I'm not big on anything more than what I use. Plus, if I ever go color blind or something, I won't have to adjust from using text editors with color...

But yeah, ASP = Evil.
2004-04-23, 7:53 PM #35
I use nvi. It's just a vi clone with some improvements, so it's not as cumbersome as vim. I find it a lot more efficent than using Notepad, since all the shortcuts can save one a lot of time. Also, using sed commands within vi has to be the most useful feature ever.

As for Perl vs PHP vs Python, I think all the languages have their place, but PHP/MySQL is the best combination for the web. PHP is developing rapidly and becoming the easiet and best way to work on the web. One can even use modules like PEAR to add OOP functionality and such to really organize their scripts. Perl is great for writing scripts, but I don't think it as simple as PHP is for the web. Python seems a little weird, with its emphasis on whitespace, but I suppose it has its uses.

not sure about the others, but you can disable the syntax highlighting (colors) in editplus. you can even just not use the code shortcuts too. of course, at that point you might as well just use notepad.
