Yes, we all know the answer lies in the name of the ****ing game. That information IS NOT USEFUL.

Got it on the second try. Good puzzle though.

I suck. I tried cheating, but failed. It's like the answer doesn't even exist anywhere on the internet. I did find this, though: http://www.borrett.id.au/computing/petals-bg.htm

It talks about how Bill Gates couldn't solve it and everyone else was sitting around with their damn smug grins and such, ripe for murderin' .......

I figured it out on my second try. I mean honestly, is it really that difficult to figure out? The name practically gives it away!

2 hours and I give up. Goin' to bed, this stupid thing isn't worth any more of my time.

english skills > math skills

I totally didn't understand what was going on, clicked the button, put in a random number, and looked at what it told me. And then I knew how it worked. Hooray!

I was shown this 'trick' by some classmates a while ago, and immediately knew what was going on. I must be "pretty stupid". :(

It is usefull... you'll understand once you get it.

I agree that your level of intelligence has nothing to do with how quickly you can solve it. But the way you approach problems and attempt to solve them definately does. Freelancer, here's another huge hint: You don't need to use any math to solve it.

I'm weak.

Two hours and I looked up the solution. What. A. Load. Of. Crap.

Grr. This spoiled my weekend.

I got it once I stopped thinking mathematically, and started thinking more abstractedly. It took me about 10 minutes, though.

Yeah, took me a few minutes. I couldn't be bothered to think of what it might be at first, so I was just putting in random numbers (and getting it wrong every time! :p). Then I thought of the only logical thing it could be, and sure enough, it was right.

I don't really see the significance of this puzzle. I'm not convinced that it in any way tests lateral thinking or 'abstract' thinking. Some puzzles, yes, but not this. This you can stumble through and 'get' accidentally, which I imagine is how the vast majority of people do.

The best puzzle for logical thinking is the with neighbours of different nationalities, living in different coloured houses, with different pets and drinking different drinks, and it asks something like "who owns the fish?". That is a most excellent puzzle.

So I tried it once last night and didn't understand it. I woke up just now and had an ah-hah! moment. That was easy :P

It's not a test, it's a demonstration that there is more than one kind of intelligence. ie not just the boring logical one

I came really close to solving it mathematically before I caved and cheated for the answer. The trick (if you're doing it mathematically) is to carefully look at the sequences which yield 0 as a result...

Took about 10 minute for me

Here's a hint:

Look up the meaning of a "petal".
2005-02-19, 11:38 AM #67
This thread is a perfect example of what the game is trying to prove. Notice it took those who tried to solve the puzzle 'logically' much longer to solve.
2005-02-19, 11:48 AM #68
bloody hell. i sat there and beat my head against it for two hours, but i was blessed with a friend who knew the answer and told me to start beta testing. i started throwing sequential numerical values at him and figured it out about five minutes later. ugh. UGH I SAY! (actually, the only thing ugh has in common with what i did say last night is the 'u'. i'll leave you to puzzle THAT one out :p).

my hint?
the name of the game is petals AROUND the rose.

i wonder how much faster some of us would have gotten it playing with real dice....

Could someone PM me an explanation or post it here in spoiler tags? I've been struggling for about 10 minutes, but seeing as I refuse to waste away the rest of my day like Freelancer, I'd like an answer.

Yeah, I can safely say that I would have NEVER found the answer until I discovered the logical algorithm for what's going on.

Yes, that's what I don't quite buy. What different types of 'intelligence' is this exactly demonstrating?

There's plenty of mind games and puzzles that require abstract thinking, that require you to tackle a problem in a way that you might not expect at first.
But this isn't one of them. This just requires you to stumble upon it blindly, as pretty much everyone will, eventually. How long it takes is arbitrary.

Um no...

You can get to the answer by thinking about it in a way that's not simply mathematical.

The puzzle in it's original form consists of 3 statements:
1) the name of the puzzle is "Petals Around The Rose" and is significant
2) the answer is always even
3) the answer for any given throw will be provided

Using just the first statement you can probably work out what the system is. You think "how can petals and roses be related to dice?" this will lead most people to think about the shape of a flower at which point the solution becomes obvious

Abstract thinkers find this easier than logical thinkers. Logical thinkers will usually take longer because they are trying to find real patterns rather than metaphorical ones.

But there is a real pattern, and it's rally not incredibly difficult to find.. Much more difficult than using the title or whatever, but it's still there.

the real pattern being:

1 = 0
2 = 0
3 = 2
4 = 0
5 = 4
6 = 0

which takes much longer to find by logic than doing it the easy way. Essentially a 5 part simultaneous equation with 6 variables.

It isn't really a 'metaphorical' pattern, it's a visual pattern. It requires the user to 'see' the dots around a central one. A purely mathematical pattern is far more 'abstract'.
I 'got it' when the numbers 1 2 6 4 1 came up and the answer was zero. This meant that the numbers 3 and 5 were the only ones that were significant, and the thing they share in common is a central dot. The 'rose around a petal' thing was largely irrelevant.

No, there are plenty of other mind games that are much better at demonstrating lateral thinking.

There probably are better examples, but that doesn't mean this one is useless.

One day people will get over the presumption that because better things are out there something must be rubbish.
