Creative vs. Apple

I am going to buy an mp3 player tomorrow, it will either be an Apple iPod mini, or a Creative Zen Micro.

Here are the respective websites.
Apple iPod mini
Creative Zen Micro

The iPod mini is $225
The Creative Zen is $278

The prices will probably balance out since I would be purchasing the warranty with the iPod (Is this still necessary?)

Zen Micro. iTunes sucks, the zen micro does FM as well.

the buttons on the Zen are ugly, the choice should be obvious.

I've found no reason to buy the extended warranty, even if I've only had it for five months.

iTunes is easy-to-use, makes it easy to drag-and-drop songs from or to individual playlists, and you can plug it right into your computer, load up iTunes, and play the iPod's contents as a playlist.

Not for 18 months (as is the same with all lithium-powered mp3 players), and the battery replacements do not cost as much as your exaggeration suggests.

micro... especially if you plan to use the EQ... ipods are known for their distortion effects... i mean EQ presets plus the micro can fit in an altoids tin to hide it from potential thieves

Distortion effects? I haven't had any problem with the audio on my iPod.

I'd personally say mini, because the price is right, and I like their style. They finally dropped the prices, so they're actually decently priced.

But the Micro does have a lot on it. EQ settings, non-proprietary software, 2 gigs more space (if I remember right).

I'm going to go with Micro.

I haven't checked the site in awhile, but that might be because there's a 6gig Mini now.

Wait until the new iPod minis come to whatever store you're buying it from or order one from the Apple site. They have an 18 hour battery life (compared to 8 before I think?).

Plus they're just as cheap.

Uhh... none and go for iRiver, which in terms of support is laughably better? (Replaced my MP3 player AFTER warranty expired, paid for shipping, and gave me brand new retail unit with all the goodies)

Micro, but I hate ipods so dont listen to me ;)

Creative. You will be happier, I promise. I love the creative software, and the battery life is incredible. I've left mine on for 24 hours straight, and it was still at 1/3 battery life. Its small, light, it has FM radio, voice recording, great software, great battery life, and best of all, it has great sound quality. It also had built in EAX effects, which is an added bonus. They iPod is nothing in comparison. You will be happier with the creative.

It's a hundred bucks Canadian to get the Ipod battery serviced by Apple.

Technically, the audio quality is superior to both the Apple Ipod, and iRiver. I don't think I notice the difference though, but the numbers are there.

The software is really sweet, you can check it out at my house if it's such a big deal. It's great for managing your transfers, and it has a nifty tag feature to fix up your tags if necessary.

I think the Creative looks like pure sex. Mine gets me laid. I swear, forget Pagewizard, buy the Micro!

Edit: I'll have to say though, the battery life on the Micro is pretty pitiful. Don't expect more than 8 hours per charge, but if you're lucky and get one of the first 25,000 Micros, they ship with a free second battery. Run tings.

Edit: Micro is also available in 4, 5, or 6 gb now.

EAX is awesome. Longer battery life is awesome. Better sound quality is awesome. 'Nuff said.

Question: does the iRiver run under a rechargeable battery like the iPod?

I don't see what else MP3 players could run on. Yeah, it does, but it's removeable.

Just out of curiosity, what do people think of the Creative Nomad JukeBox Zen Xtra? $300 for 60GB seems like a pretty good deal to me, but I don't know anything else about the player.

My far inferior Phillips mp3 player can be plugged in and is treated like a hard-disk, can either the iPod or the Micro do this? I'd really hate to have to use some software just to transfer files, rather than just copying it to a removable disk.

In the instructions it tells you how to set up the iPod to be used like a hard drive. I haven't done this, so I don't know. All I know is it can be done.

In my opinion, don't factor in EQ. If you use it, it actually takes up more battery power as it plays. I've never listened to any song on my iPod and gone searching for eq settings. Songs sound fine as they are (generally). Can you get FM transmitters for the micro and iriver? My friend has one for his iPod - It's like his own radio station in his pocket that plays no commercials, no talking, and no dud songs on any sound system or car audio system he wants.

If you were going for a full size iPod I'd recommend that, but I really don't like the feel of the minis - they're all 'plasticy'.

I do love the interface and click wheel - and iTunes is dead easy to work with.

Yeah, so it sounds like I'm an apple lover, and it's true, but I'd take the Creative over the mini, but not over the 20gig plus fellas.

(And I've just made it 18 -17 in favour of Creative!)

If you have the Applecare Protection Plan on your iPod and something happens with the battery, it's either replaced free of charge or anew one is sent out to you free of charge. Either way, you have to have the extended warranty..

The Micro can do it, but you have to set up a seperate partition from your mp3 library. It's not that hard, but it is limited to 2.5 gigs.
2005-03-07, 5:43 AM #33
Oh, it may've been mentioned, but you can toggle the iPods to act as HD's too, then just drag and drop in Windows.

How is DRM on the Creative? I really don't like that iTunes stuff. I just want to acces the mp3player like a external hdd and be able to play the files on it. How does the Creative make it?

I've done that with a mate's iPod.

Plug it in, iTunes will play anything off it - we did it at our party last term.

I've heard the Apple Customer Support for things like borked batteries is crap. Everyone tells me to get the Best Buy warranty, if at all possible, if I get one.

Meh.

Right..

Find out when you need technical support for something andhave to pay 50 bucks to be told how to turn your computer off when its frozen. Or your iPod, etc.

Apple has great products, just poor policies and technical support guidelines. Trust me on those ones.
