Quint says it best:

Stephen King better watch out because he's murdered thousands of fake people and, like King did in THE STAND, Tom Clancy has set off fake nukes on fake American soil... if that's not a terrorist threat, I don't know what is.

I read this, and I dont say stupid americans, I say stupid humans.

I will never understand the knee jerk reactions of some to such poorly written and uninformative news stories some see fit to link to here. There is absolutely no coherent information in the first link in this thread to draw any conclusion on this topic. Furthermore, the following quote from said link is proof that the brat should have been arrested simply for his substandard mastery of the English language. If his story was as poorly written it's no wonder he's being detained.

Quote:
"It didn't mention nobody who lives in Clark County, didn't mention (George Rogers Clark High School), didn't mention no principal or cops, nothing,"
said Poole. "Half the people at high school know me. They know I'm not that stupid, that crazy."

At least he admits that they know he's not that stupid.

I don't really see how those links change anything. The only evidence mentioned is the "writings". Since when is it a crime to write a story about recruiting a gang to take over your school? Is it only amusing when Calvin of "Calvin and Hobbes" does it? Sheesh.

Granted, there may be more to the story, but based on those three reports, the whole thing sounds idiotic.

He was arrested for attempting to form a gang, the writing were turned over because they probably had similarities to the take over he was discussing.

How does a poorly written and uninformative "news" story lead so many of you to draw conclusions on as broad of issues as American domestic policy or the human race. Seems to me the only person in this thread, myself excluded, making any real attempt to analyze and understand the facts of this case is TimeWolfOfThePast.

See, that would make sense, except it doesn't say in any of these shoddily-written articles that this Poole kid was discussing anything of the kind. All they say is that some family member told the police that the kid was trying to "recruit a gang to take over the school," and that the police found these writings about taking over a school. How did this anonymous family member know he was trying to recruit a gang? Did the family member just find the writings, jump to a conclusion, and phone the cops? Was there any evidence of any wrongdoing at all outside of the writings? The articles don't mention any, which means they're either very poorly researched articles, or some poor kid just got arrested for having too vivid an imagination.

The second pair of articles don't tell any new information that wasn't in the first. They just spin it a different way.

Assuming that this news story is true, it only reflects on American domestic policy. It has nothing to do the human race as a whole.

If the news story is bogus, then everyone is happy.

Absolutely incorrect. I have no reason to assume that anything in the story, other than quotes, is not true. His concerned grandparents turned over writings of his which gave the police concern. Obviously his grandparents were concerned about his behavior.

What do these articles tell us? The first one says he was arrested because of his fictional stories. The other linked ones just say he was arrested for "trying to recruit a gang".

People here calling the guy stupid, and saying he deserved what he got dont know what they are talking about. Yea he talked with improper grammar in the article... had it not occured that maybe everyone who lives in that area talks like that? Besides, even if he is stupid, then how is he supposedly going to mastermind some takeover of his school then?

People saying the human race is stupid because of this also dont know what they are talking about. I will admit that about half the people in the world are below average in intelligence, but most the people I know would be able to find the flaws in this...

I personally do believe the law would apprehend the kid based on some fictional stories. I mean schools have suspended kids for bringing freakin toy guns that came with a GI Joe figure to school. I also seem to remember somewhere someone got arrested for bringing a steak knife in their lunch to cut their meat. That one is arguable, but I say unless the kid was threatening people with the knife, then it was an unnecessary waste of time to deal with it. Who's to say the law wouldnt go a step further here?

You're missing a fact from the story. His grandparents turned his writings over to police. He wasn't arrested simply for his writings. He was arrested because of whatever his grandparents told the police as well as, what must be assumed to be, corroborative writings. Hell, shouldn't we be praising these actions since most people's reaction was why didn't the Columbine parents know about their derranged children?

My point here is that many people are ready to jump to OMG TEH PATRIUT ACT IS TEH EVIL based on such scarce information instead of being critical thinkers.

Seriously.

This was a country built upon basic, natural rights. The Patriot act seems to only want to take them away from us.

I mean, what are we, the 50 colonies now?

Yeah I think imprisioning people indefinately without charges or a trial qualifies as evil.

Wookie--the Patriot Act takes away very many basic rights that we should be granted. All in the name of 'homeland security'. What good's protecting the homeland if you change it drastically? And yes, it is drastic changes. Hopefully it'll be phased out by the end of this year, like they want it to (or is it already going to be?). I can't wait.
