GT4 is the best game ever

This is where we all hail the greatest racing sim ever made.

What's everybody driving? Favourite cars?

The graphics are sooooo pretty. What's everyone's favourite track? Not sure if I can go past Laguna Seca...

Only been playing it a few hours. I love how you have to take your car to certain companies to have them tuned now and they offer different things, that's awesome. Currently playing around with a second-hand 89 Skyline GTR, goes pretty well with a turbo under the hood. Thinking about a Mazda RX-8 or Holden Monaro next.

Biggest complaint so far is definitely that there's just too damn many cars to choose from! I want them all...

Damn me for having an XBox and Gamecube but no PS2...

I *almost* bought one the other day just for GT4, then I remembered that I'm a poor college student...

I too am in love with this game... It is truly is the best racing sim ever... Everything is so utterly real, beautifully done. Kudos to those Japanese masters of game programming.

Everyone post their favorite car for fooling around in so far.

Me = Mercedes Benz 190e Evolution II. Fun on the Nurburgring! :D

So many cars, so little time... ;)

All of those are better games.

Yes. I MUST own this game, finally. My personal favorite car is the McLaren F1. BMW V12 6.0L. Yum. :p

Hmm....I thought PS2 visuals were limited to 480p (or is it 'i'?), let alone 720 as a goal.....

I've only played 1 and 2 (must save some money for this it would seem) - but I always loved the TVR Cerbera LM (sp? It's been a while).

And Laguna Seca - awesome.

It's great watching real bike races on it too :)

That's what flatout is for. You can't get realistic crash models on real cars...seriously, do you know how much money it would've cost them to crash over 700 cars?

Naturally I'll get other games as well, but this is going to push me over the edge..lol

do you still get the Suzuki Pikes Peaks?

Upon playing it a bit more, It's really grown on me. At first, I prefered GT3. My only complaint is the lack of tracks compared to what they advertised. Sure, 50 tracks, but what the don't tell you is that 5 layouts of Suzuka and Fuji take up 10 of them.

I don't see anything particularly special about this game, it doesn't look that great in terms of graphics... There's much better looking games out there.

All it has to render is the car. Almost everything else is just a sky box, or has really simplistic models and textures.

GT4 is by far one of the best games i've ever played on PS2 (I got it the friday after release - which is a first for me).

Only complaint about it is that in 2-Player mode (I don't play online) you can't use racing tires, and in arcade mode, the player garage is completely inaccessable.

As for the Piles Peak Escudo (possibly the fastest car in GT3 next to the F1 cars) I havn't seen it in GT4 yet, but I doubt that they got rid of it (especially as all of the teams for GT3 are still there).

The Pikes Peak car is in there, almost positive of it. Like usual you'll probably have to win it again.

I couldnt figure something out today. Was playing around with my Skyline and fitted an LSD to it. Did not like the way it really made the car understeer while braking, but now I cant find the option to take the damn thing off. I'm sure in the last one you could unequip upgrades you didnt want. Cant figure out how the hell to do it in GT4.

No you don't get it. They didn't crash all of those cars...the guy who made GT4 is like, insanely OCD. He has to have his game PERFECT. That's his point. Nothing can be faked, nothing can be even slightly false. I watched the Icons for him, and have read up on him, and the guy is insanely nitpicky. He would have to crash all the cars just to make it realistic.

That being said, that game looks interesting. Wonder if it'll be any good.

I'm thinking he's talking about the Papyrus racing sims for the PC that is arguably the best racing sim series ever available to the consumer. Sure it's a very specific genre but I've never seen the same type of immersive realism duplicated in a console racer. Granted I haven't played GT4 and probably won't since I don't own a PS2 and I'm assuming by skimming this thread that they've stuck to the usual "invulnerable" auto bodies. That's a shame if I assume correctly.

i bought a ps2 just to play gt4, the commercials and the new slim ps2 design got me to buy it. As for gt4, it was fun at first but it became to easily exploitable with winning the same expensive cars over and over to get easy cash. I finished about 25% and havent played a whole lot.

As for graphics, the "skyboxes" are impressive but on levels with huge 3d mountains and canyons in the back ground and lighting respectively its a pretty game. The ps2 to my knowledge cannot bump map so it uses a cool shader effect on the road to look more real like most racing games on the xbox.

The cars are cool but its kinda sad when there are more versions of the stupid Honda NSX then there are BMWs total and more Hondas then any game should ever have. I dont care honestly about all the little different versions of japanese make. Its like having a Escort LX, LS, and GL all as different cars except a crappy jap car in its place. THe race cars that you win are where the game shines where breaking and turning are actually effective.

Controlling cars is hard as well because a car stock handles way worse then it should. If a car cant turn sharply at 20 miles an hour right before you go off the track its frustrating.

They could really cut out alot of the same makes of cars and focus more and prestige cars.

Why is Porsche known as RUF????

I love how you can take all these 'crappy' old cars and hot them up. It's fun doing crazy things with cars you see on the road every day, as well as those you only see at motor shows. You can do crap like a completely decked out Mini vs a standard Dodge Viper. Fun :D

Porsche is known as RUF because they couldnt get the Porsche licence. RUF is an after-market modder of Porsches.

Watch the speedo next time you're driving and do a standard 90 degree turn into a street. 20mph is pushing it a little. You'll most likely go slower than that. Yet you're complaining because your stock standard car wont turn sharply, under heavy breaking, at speeds which most of the cars in the game are not designed to operate at.... Yeah.

Oh, and turn all the assits off, then you're much more likely to kick the tail out (and spin) than understeer off the track. Much more realistic :)

And can anyone please tell me how to get the 2-player replay into full-screen mode? We couldnt figure out how. Seems kinda stupid if you have to have the replay split-screen also.

nope italian cars are def not the supercar cars we know and love....

as far as suping up 'crappy' cars yeah it is fun to an extent, and my car can do a 20 mile an hour turn sharply with body roll and stock characteristics but it will still do it. My car is also 2800 lbs. and is no feather. I suped up my Mini BTW and i wouldn't consider it a crappy car.

ok well sorry for my long post but frankly I am kind of disappointed the a game touting over 600 cars is mostly repeats of several tiny different iterations of each car... I love the game and am impressed dont get me wrong but i really dont care about every edition of jap car and wish more time and effort would have gone into modeling more different cars as they have the license from some good companies and do not make any cars worth playing... such as bentley...

Like Spork said, licensing the Porsche name would have taken up a HUGE amount of money, so they went with RUF instead. However, RUF does not simply mod Porche's cars. They completely overhaul them down to every last detail. They change so much, they are officially recognized as an automaker by the German government. The cars are truly RUF's, not Porsche's.

True, VERY MUCH overkill. But you have to consider that the Skyline GT-R is (perhaps not arguably) the greatest car ever to come from Japan. It's like a national icon. The car has been around a long time and each model is a tribute to a great Skyline. Of course, not all the great Skylines are there as that would be rediculous. I don't blame them for having that many Skylines. Think of it this way, how many versions of the Mustang could a U.S. game maker put in their game? AT LEAST as many as there are Skylines. Both cars are utter legends in their home countries.
