Prayers and/or positive vibes, please pass them to my sister.

Well, this is hard to talk about but I need to get it out.

A few months ago my sister was diagnosed with a brain malformation called a Chiari Malformation Type 1. Of the 3 types, it's the "best" type to get, but it's still serious. Generally, this happens in children, but my sister is 19 and she got it. The doctors think it was aggravated by a car accident about 2 years ago (she was rear-ended by a high-schooler who was on her cell phone and didn't realize there was a red light and all the traffic was stopped).

Anyway, she's been in and out of the doctor for tests and brain scans and stuff like that for the past few months. They finally decided to do surgery on her (this was last week). They said it would be about a month before they could get her in, but they would call Monday. Monday, they called and said they wanted to do the surgery on Friday (that's tomorrow). We were all caught by surprise. I know my sister is very scared (and so is the whole family). It's not exactly "brain surgery" since they don't actually cut her brain, but they will be extracting part of her skull to make room for excess spinal fluid (if I understand correctly -- chances are I don't).

Anyway, her surgery is tomorrow morning. They say it will take at least 4 hours and she will be in the hospital at least until Wednesday.

So if you pray, please keep her in your prayers. If you don't pray, please do whatever it is you do when you really want something to turn out for the best.

I wish her luck.

She'll be absolutelly fine, just help her believe that. Often times a patient's will is what keeps the heart-monitor beeping, not the doctor's efforts. This is a fact that I can vouch for as I've flatlined twice.

This man, though usually a sarcastic ***hat, is quite correct. Best wishes, and help her be strong through it. Never an easy thing to get one's head operated on. Send her my regards.

edit: it knows to censor all of ***hat when you don't censor it yourself. That's silly.

Are you going to be able to pay for the surgery and everything okay?
If not, maybe we can set up a paypal link for people to chip in.

I believe you, but do you know of any medical information about it? I've always wondered why that might be.

Best wishes Brian.

Jesus, that's really lousy. Think of it this way, she's getting into surgery faster than expected, that can only be a good thing.

I'll be hoping for the best for her.

My dad was diagnosed with Arnold Ciari malformation. They misdaigonsed him for months. Then they found out it was an aggresive brain tumor at the base of his skull pinching off the nerves that control body functions such as breathing. They immediatly rushed him to the hospital. The tumor was so advanced he should have died the day they found it. But he pulled through and he's okay now. I know what it's like to be in that position. I'll pray for her and you.
