It's ridiculous that he was allowed in the courtroom without handcuffs, and in civilian clothes.

You must admit though, that is one kickass escape.

Normally it wouldn't be as he was on bond but considering he was previously discovered to be hiding a shank in his shoe I would have to partially agree.

Well, I guess if murdering innocent people is what you consider "kickass".

Heard about this on the way home on the radio. They reported it as "the suspected killer grabbed a gun off the police officer and started shooting"[italics mine]. I wouldn't really call that "suspected".

Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Some civil rights/liberties group would have a field day if they didnt word it like that.

Kind of like certain members of the forums who interperet the rules literally and to the letter and bug us admins when we dont do the same thing. ;) :p

He took the gun from a female deputy. That's not kickass... that's just weak.

But he did kill her (or another deputy, I'm unclear at this point) and the judge execution style. I mean, allegedly *watchs for ACLU lawyers* Maybe that's why it's "kickass".

Dude, Flexor's right.

If this were a videogame, or GTA or something, that would be just another day at the movies.

I think what he's trying to say is... That was something you don't see everyday.

But yeah... it's very f'd up.

Hope they catch the guy.

I'm open minded enough to see your point. I've already pondered it. Thing is "kickass" has a positive connotation. A kickass game, movie, book, etc.

I would agree that this is indeed a very dramatic escape. I just hope he doesn't kill anyone else, that he is found quickly, and that he puts up enough of a fight that the cops will be justified for killing him (without causing any further injury to anyone else).

Flexor is right in the sense that yea, if it were a video game or a movie it would be a kickass escape. The fact that it really did happen is not a cool thing at all, however, and I feel terribly sorry for their families and I hope that ******* is caught.

In a morbid sort of way, yes. But I still hope the man is caught, and locked up for good, or killed. Or both.

Shooting an officer in the mouth, killing a judge, two lawyers, etc...just bad. Very bad.

For the record:

Female Deputy - Alive, critical condition, with a graze wound

Judge, recorder (why? It's just a bloody recorder?), and a deputy that was outside - Dead

Something went very wrong here. Escape a courthouse? Kill three people there? Aren't there other police/armed lawmen there to, you know, protect from such situations. Then getting away? Going and changing at least three cars? Jeeze, what is this guy, a videogame character?

I hope they frag this guy. He should have a videogame type death, you know, a whole army of cops unloading on him.

In GTA, that would be nifty. But this is real life. There's nothing kickass in real life about 3 people being murdered.
As far as civilian clothes, it goes back to "innocent until proven guilty". When you go before a jury, if you're wearing an orange jump suit and handcuffs, you already appear guilty and thus before the trial even starts you start off at a disadvantage. Remember, this was before he killed 3 people. At the time it wasnt anything out of the ordinary to let him change into civies.
From the link above, "Sources told CNN the initial overpowering occurred in an elevator." Explains why nobody else was around then. Not sure why they couldnt stop him from leaving, though most court security officers/baliffs are retired police officers. Dont know if that explains anything or not.

I'll vouch for flex. I think it's a pretty kickass escape. Once they find the ******* and lock him up / shoot him on the spot it'll be a kickass conclusion too. But yeah. He had some gumption. Good on him.

You're standing in an elevator, about to go to court for a petty drug crime. But you're antsy about something else. 2 weeks ago, in a drunken rage, you shot your brother in the face and killed him. You covered up the body well, and no one knows anything except your nephew who will be at the hearing today. He's already talked to the judge and you suspect, being 12, he won't be able to keep himself quiet. Alone and afraid, you act. The only other person in the elevator with you is a female officer who looks more interested in the ceiling than she does at you. You act quick, sliding her pistol out of her holster, and aiming it at her. "Just get on the ground and cuff yourself!" you cry, afraid. She pulls out her pepper spray and turns to spray. Not thinking, you pull the trigger.

10 minutes later you're standing in the courtroom, the judge and recorder are laying on the floor. The judge knows. He makes a move to jump at you and again, you react instantly and a bullet catches him in the face. The recorder has his hands on a chair and has already hit you once in the ribs. Another shot goes off and both of the men are laying on the floor dead. Crazed and afraid, you run out the door. A police deputy is awaiting you, a gun in his hand. You attempt to escape, but he begins opening fire at you. A few shots fire off in his direction and he stops firing at you. You continue running until you get to a reporter's van. He won't cooperate so you knock him out to shut him up. You hop in the car, and drive off.

I'm not trying to glorify it, or justify what he did as OK, or victimize him in any way. I'm only saying, people quickly jump to conclusions about people like this guy. He probably didn't intend to kill anyone to begin with. It may have lead to that, or been easier to do that, but this is only human nature.

And that IS a kick-*** escape. It's not kickass as in, wow, he beat the man. It's kickass in that he shot 3 people and escaped. It's like some adventurous story we always hear about from the mob days. Now it's real. Of course we aren't condoning it, it's just exciting in a world of boredom and day to day monotony.

Yeah, and the holocaust was kick *** in its own way too...

*Note - this comment is not serious - but the point stands*

I live in GA, and the thought that his escape was 'kick ***' is not something that crossed my mind. I'm sure if one of you happens to get killed while you are doing your job, I'll be sure to say that the criminal had a kick *** escape.
2005-03-11, 11:08 PM #30
You completelly ignored what anyone said. We're not saying "COOL! 3 PEOPLE DIED HAHA!" We're saying "WOW, he didn't just go to the court and get sent to jail, he shot and killed 3 people... and eascaped! holy hell that's an amazing eascape, or even a kickass one!"

I don't really see how the holocaust was kick-*** in any sense of the word.

But this guy's escape is incredible, considering that practically nobody makes an escape like that outside of fiction.
2005-03-11, 11:17 PM #32
No, I get what you're saying... I just don't think 'kick ***' is the most appropriate term.

Again, the holocaust example isn't saying it was. But it is pretty crazy how the executions took place, how the Germans were able to run the camps so long, and how a group could exterminate a population so large. In that sense, was it kick *** operation? I'm not saying kick *** as in it was cool or anything, I'm saying kick *** as in its incredible they were able to acheive something so unthinkable...

2005-03-11, 11:21 PM #33
I agree, kick-*** isn't the best term, but I think we can assume Flexor isn't saying "WOW! He's a fantastic killer, and really showed them!"

Just because you said that, I still don't think Sam Fisher is cooler than Snake, Jim. Avoiding enemy casualties in a videogame is NOT representative of your morals. :-P

Seriously: The guy on TV that was defending the man said he was very resourceful, bright, analytical, and wise. He said he's a very dangerous person because of his mind, not because of violence.

Scary?

The only way this was kickass is if they guy was actually trying to get away to stop an imminent nuclear disaster in a highly populated area, and the cops just simply wouldn't listen... saying "yea yea, and I suppose Bin Laden is with em too? Crazy fool."

If the guy ends up killing Bin Laden because of this escape, then its kickass... for right now its just the bad guy getting away.
