None of those should be on any lists associated with eachother. You just can't compare things that are so different. I have NO clue why people like RTSs, but they do. My own list of top 100 games would probably have 1 or 2 random RTSs simply because of their accomplishments or effect on gaming as a whole.

I hate when videogame magazines try to get TRL about things. I'd prefer a monthly look at a specific genre of videogames, and an in-depth read of the benchmark and influential, or forgotten primes of that genre. THAT'D be a tip-top article, not this "And HL1 is SO much better than Doom because..." crap.

!!!

That hurts me more than the lack of Thief. NOLF1 was legendary in its humor and atmosphere, and NOLF2 took that and carried it for another mile or two. The atmosphere in the arab and japanese levels blew me away... and need I mention the trailer park?

Where's... Morrowind? :(

The list is lacking alot, after a careful read, it really dissapointed me. But oh well, it's just a list.

Has anyone noticed yet that games 2-7 say that they were published and developed by Blizzard? Word...

Anyway, Half-Life so does not deserve #1. And Homeworld should be higher.

If the games are based on how good they are, then Master of Orion 2 should be on that list.

And Deus Ex should be #1.

Amen to that Brother!

They must be working for the Taidan to make homeworld so low!

BF1942 should be punted off that list and replaced with CS.

CS is the most overrated game ever made.

Which is why it's the most played game ever made.

No, it's really not. It's a great game. The community is just iffy.

It's an ok game, and the community is terrible.

Whats your point.

Brittany Spears and The Backstreet Boys are some of the most bought music in the world.. and they suck.

I can't speak for PCG, but personally, Half-Life is one of the only games that I continue to play four years later (I didn't play it until 2001). I'm not sure if I'd go as far as to say it's the #1 game of all time, but I'm having a hard time thinking of anything else to fill that slot.

And while I agree, Deus Ex should definitely be higher up on the list, I really don't think it deserves #1. It should definitely be in the top 10, but it wouldn't really be appropriate for the top slot.

They should just do "TOP TEN GAMES OF ALL TIME EXCLUDING HALF LIFE 1 & 2" ! !

You know ! !

EDIT: Additionally, they're rating every game from NBA SLUGFEST BLITZ 2007 to I CHAINSAWED DADDY'S INTESTINES OUT, so this list could hardly do any justice imo.

I used to play CS, but you're right, most people are *******s. There's a couple servers run on campus so it's not as bad, but I've stopped playing CS for the most part.

Interesting list, but it's like those lists of the top 100 greatest bands. No one can ever really decide definitively. They can't even know.

A friend just lent me X-Com UFO defense. This game rules, its good to see its on there.

The only X-com game I've ever played was X-com Enforcer... which is mad fun.

I would definitley put Doom3D or Wolf at 1 or 2. They are the origin practically of nearly 60% of thsoe games.

I'm sure that if Doom or Wolf wouldn't of come out, that another game eventually would've done what they did, but the point is is that Doom and Wolf3d were the definitive genre-making games.

I still play Wolfenstein all the time. Too fun

What did you do in X-Com Enforcer? Is it newer?
2005-03-16, 10:14 PM #65
I counted 30 games on there that I've played. Instead of listing those I felt don't belong I think it'd be better to say I'm really glad they listed:
Fallout
Sam & Max Hit the Road
The Secret of Monkey Island
and EverQuest

Fallout wasn't as good as Fallout 2 in my opinion, but I think most Fallout fans would disagree with me there.

It's a shame they didn't include Planescape: Torment. Maybe it just slipped their minds.

Although MechWarrior 2 was a good mention, I believe MechWarrior 1 was ground-breaking and could take it's place on that list.

Most of the posts in this thread are talking about FPS's. Ever notice all anger and hatred centers around those?

Well, you were this robot guy, and you killed hordes and hordes of aliens.

Loads of fun.

It was arcade style.

That's because FPS games are a temptation of the dark side.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

And you came upon this website.... how?

Anyway, I think that SW: Rebellion/Supremacy should be on there somewhere, simply because I've never spent 9 hours straight playing any other game. And I mean straight, not getting up to stretch, not eating or drinking or using the bathroom... I just looked at my watch 9 hours later and said "This is wrong..."

Starcraft was ok, but it wasn't revolutionary. I much prefer Warcraft III. Total Annihilation should be close, if not better, than starcraft.

Bleh... you liked WarCraftIII???!? I hate games with upkeep. It is actually worse with that Hero system they put in there. It unbalanced everything in the game. WarCraft 1 and 2 were much better in terms of balance.

StarCraft may not have been revolutionary but it had an awsome and engaging story and a very balanced system with no upkeep costs.

Doom was a really good game but Duke3D should be much higher. It was much more revolutionary than Wolf3D to Doom.

I loved WC3's hero system, and upkeep dosen't bother me. Not my fault you don't know how to manage rescources.

Also, DooM had the first multiplayer deathmatch as I remember it.

Woah woah.... I knew how to manage my resources in that game but the problem is that I'm used to most games not having one so it bothers me in that sense.

Doom did in fact have the first multiplayer and was the best of it's time. But I'm pretty sure when Duke3D came out, it blew Doom right out of the water with the ability to jump and fly, sectors over sectors, and many other effects that was impossible in Doom.

Nowadays though, DooM has surpassed Duke3d I'd think. ZDoom and Zdaemon prove this :)

Jumping, looking around, CTF, DM, TDM, imrpoved graphics with huge resolutions and everything. Dunno about duke3d though :S

Duke3D has many improvement projects available. Doom may be more popular, but that doesn't make it better.

I used to have a mod on my old computer that added 100+ weapons to doom. That was fun. Espescially in multiplayer, having tons of different projectiles flying around from flamethrowers, to huge pillars of lightning to grenades.

You need to try a MMOG. I often play PlanetSide or EQ2 for a 6 hour stretch without moving and probably have highs up around 12 hours.

I did a 68 hour session for EQ1 but that included eating, bathroom breaks and like a dozen 2-liter bottles of soda. During the 5+ years I played EQ1 I logged over 400 in-game real-time days, so I figure I spent at least 200 of those days at the keyboard. Not sure how many games can claim that sort of replayability.

I'm sure there are some WoW fiends who will rack up similar numbers in the upcoming years. Which is a shame, I was hoping WoW would flop or explode or something; another tornado needs to hit their servers.

Jonofs Duke3d port with the High Resolution pack is way better than any of the Doom ports.
