Do you or do you not INVERT YOUR MOUSE
2005-03-21, 12:43 PM #41
When I played JK back in the day I only used keyboard. Then when HL came out, the guns required the ability to aim well because they didnt have the insane amount of spread that the CRifle or RailDet had. So I went to the mouse, and played inverted to start.

Then a mod came out for HL, Rune-something, where you picked up all different suits with different powers like double armor, double firing rate, constant healing, all kinds of things. The problem with this mod was that there was a bug that wouldn't let you invert your mouse. So I had to learn how to play uninverted, and I did, and I havent gone back to inverted since. However, when I play Battlefield I use the joystick to fly planes, and joystick is always inverted for me.

never invert my mouse
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Always inverted - for PC or console.

It just makes sense...

Friends don't like it though. I remember playing Halo 1 on X-box. Whenever we would switch off with each other, people would log off my name cause they could not deal with the inversion and did not want to change the setting manually.

I think JK had a lot to do with it though too...

I used the keyboard only for it, and you hit up to look down. Same thing

If I am flying a ship of some sort, inverted, if it's normal (UT2004) it's not inverted.
DO NOT WANT.

Inverted...

Here's a little test.. See the scroll bar over on the right? Click the bar and drag it DOWN. Which direction does the text go? UP!

It's natural.. well kind of.. :p

Inverted 4 life!!!!!!

I can't STAND non-inversion. It makes perfect sense to work that way.

For a good five years I started out as non-inverted. However, when I my computer was busted and the only game I could play Duke Nukem 3D, I forced myself to use inverted because that game didn't have non-inverted. Ever since then, for about 3 years now, I use inverted. I have to say though that even though I used inverted when I play games, I feel disoriented if I use inverted when using a 3d program like 3dsmax or Radiant. I know - that's just bizzare that I'm like that O_o

I use inverted, because Jedi Knight was the first game I used mouse look for, and because of all the flight sims I played with just a mouse before I had a joystick.

Interestingly enough, the first time I beat Jedi Knight, I beat it without using the mouse. I didnt know you could use the mouse to look around. I used the same keys that were used for Dark Forces: the arrow keys to move around, pg up and pg dn to look up and down, and control and z to fire.

Same here. I was really good as a keyboard player, but obviously getting owned by the mouse users. I was playing on the zone one day, and a guy was like, how come you don't use the mouse?

And I said, "Eh? Mouse? This is a game!"

And he said, "Omg noob, turn on mouse look. You can aim incredibly easy with it."

And I was thus enlightened.

I started out using inverted playing JK, but at some point I was too lazy to change the setting and used uninverted for about 15 mins. Something in my brain flipped and I haven't been able to use inverted since.

Inverting with a joystick makes perfect sense. Inverting with a mouse seems silly to me.

Always inverted. I beleive F-117 NightStorm for Genesis (I think that's the name) got me into the 'simulation' mode. Jedi Knight was second.

I play un-inverted for FPS's and inverted for flying games (TIE Fighter, Battlefield). Un-inverted for FPS makes sense for me because you are pointing at things with your gun. You point your gun up and down normally, right?

Still, for flight inverted all the way.

Seeing as how you aren't actually pointing your gun, but moving your body as well, I would have to say NO on that one.

And think about this:

If you look at the movement of the gun when you aim it upwards, the back of the gun is usually the point of rotation, correct?

If that is the point of rotation, then when the other end of the gun moves upward, you are actually rotating the gun in the negative direction. To emulate this movement, you would need to invert the mouse.

Thus, scientifically, inverted is correct. :p

I invert with mouse/PC.
Non-inverted with gamepad/console.

Does that make me weird?

But I'm playing a game. I'm pointing at things on a screen with a mouse. Pointing is done with an uninverted mouse. (I hope you don't use inverted for things other than games).

In conclusion: It's a game. I'm not actually moving a gun, so realism is not necessarily the best option.

So you play flight sims with non-inversion? Because that's what you are saying, with your reasoning.

And no, you aren't pointing at things on the screen. There's no "cursor" that you move around the screen. You are moving your entire view, not a little pointer.

Er...matty...I think he was trying to say 'drop it'. :\

Mikus--holy crap, we agree. Even though I play non-inverted on Halo, most console games I can't play without inversion. Confuses me :\

Zigactly.

And you can't say whether or not you are pointing a cursor or moving a gun in a game because it is exactly that: a game. I tend to see it as pointing a cursor and that's that.

There's no scientific justification for either method, it's a preference. You're not moving the mouse up and down, you're pushing it forward and pulling it backward. Whether you associate "forward" with up or down is simply a matter of your own perspective.

As for me, I started out inverted because JK was the first shooter I played with a mouse, and JK had invert on by default. I never bothered messing around with the setting, and thus, I got used to inverted, and couldn't play any other shooters without invert on. Then I stopped playing shooters for a while, and finally came back to UT sometime last year. I instinctively turned on invert because that's how I always used to play, but found I couldn't play at all like that any more. I turned off invert and started dominating once again. So now I exclusively use non-inverted mouse, which is convenient, because that's the default now. I'm not sure what happened for me to make that switch.

I use inverted, I blame Goldeneye

Depends on the game for me. I play inverted with JK, JO, and JA for 3rd person. I use inverted for stealth games, as I feel I have more of a different side of the brain approach to those games. Otherwise, for CSS, and DoD? If I inverted it, I'd be completelly disoriented.

I honestly think it's determined by the type of a brained person you are. If you're a logical player, you use one, if you're a [different kind of player?] you use the other.

Oh and:

I too used the keyboard for the LONGEST time on JK, and was actually pretty damn good with it. I got so good that people couldn't tell I was using the keyboard. Then one day someone said "You mean you don't use the keyboard!? At least try it..." and then it all changed.

I invert it on the little joysticks on console games (PS2, GameCube). The mouse I don't invert because the natural state in a graphical environment (at least with my experiences using MS-DOS, Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP, and the Apple OS) is that it isn't inverted.
