The Return of Steam

Steam is a load of crap. What's the point of it? It can still be bypassed by hacking, I've heard and even seen the result of a steam hack. So much for "security". Otherwise, what does it do? Annoy 50% of users, yes.
Sneaky sneaks. I'm actually a werewolf. Woof.

Steam does have some issues that need to be worked out, but all in all I believe this is how games will be distributed in the future. And I like it. I will be able to purchase games online and begin downloading them immediately. AND I can play them on any computer I wish simply by logging on and downloading.

I've only had a few minor problems with Steam... like where it starts downloading an update so I can't play the game... but then the update can't be downloaded because the server is too busy, only it's not :(

Other than that occasional snag, I am happy with Steam.

Cyg, could you have some ports blocking the ones Steam uses to download content?

I've honestly never had any major complaints or problems with steam. Runs pretty smooth on my end.

Methinks that even if a port would be blocked, it would still show some sort of network activity.

As for steam. It's neato torpedo when it works. It sucks when it doesn't work. And when it doesn't work, it is usually through no fault of my own.

I also don't like the nazi style control Valve now has over software I BOUGHT.

This is the reason I will never buy HL2. (I've also heard that at least on some people's systems, Steam has to revalidate HL2 everytime to start it up).

I hate steam. It hasn't given me any problems with HL2 or CS:S but apparently, someone else has registered my HL1 CD Key already, and for me to prove that I actually own the game I have to send in my CD, $10, AND wait 4 weeks for them to get it back to me! I BOUGHT THE <explicitive> GAME ALREADY! I WILL NOT PAY ALMOST THE EXACT PRICE IT COST ME, JUST SO I CAN PLAY IT!!!

Man, I'm glad I didn't hit the submit button after typing that. Now that I've calmed down a little (and edited a word), back when HL was on WON I had no troubles. I could get the newest versions of Natural Selection (among other mods) and life was good. Now steam won't let me register my platinum pack and so I'm stuck with playing the games on my LAN server and never getting the new versions of Steam-only mods. I hate steam.

Those are some of the most moot points I've ever heard. I can see some of your people's arguments, but that website is far from factual, and only contains randomly spewed inferences about steam. Not to mention, they bluntly use the strawman fallacy, then nock it down themselves. Steam is NOT charging for CSS, and probably won't EVER charge for CSS. Half of that site's arguments are "Even though they probably arent at fault, what if something completelly random happened, huh? What then." Oh, and their legal argument is completelly incorrect. If you read closelly, they completelly debunk their own argument by stating steam and it's games are a service. You can resell steam, because IT is the product.

That site pretty much sums up why I hate biased opinions. Yeah, steam does have some problems, but it's the first generation in a new line of technology.

Don't blame steam, it's a program, blame the people responsible for the program (valve).

Those commies. Wanting to sell their game in a way it won't get pirated. Grr. Not to mention the part where I don't have to have a physical disk for a game anymore.

The ONLY argument any of you can make, is that steam shouldn't be required to play, not because steam sucks, but because you own a physical copy of the game, and would like to play it without having to register it. That's it. The productivity of steam is obviously varied on the machine it's running on.

Why didn't you just enter the CD-keys of the other 4 programs that came with it? Any of the 5 will unlock the entire pack on Steam.

I'm with ya kirby...

The guy who wrote that article must be afraid to go outside with the chance of an object from space crashing into him...

I mean - Hell, IT'S POSSIBLE?!

Steam works for a lot of people...

Valve just can't patch steam on a case by case basis, they have to patch it for the majority. And obviously, it is working for the majority if you see the # of people on Steam. So what are they supposed to do? When they find a bug that is KNOWN, they release a patch. The day after a new patch came out once- it caused some people problems with steam. They released a patch the next day to fix it.

They can't just release a patch because you can't get it to work. It needs to be a BUG that is confirmable by others... (and I'm referring to bugs with steam or that makes a game unplayable. Not a glitch that is trivial and does not affect gameplay)

Do you have Blue Shift?

You can use your Blue Shift cdkey to register HL, because it's a valid HL cdkey.

If you bought Blue Shift, you can get HL from steam. Neat, huh?

...and we all know how well that plan actually worked....I've heard that HL2 is actually very easy to pirate.

That's the only thing I can think of that would be a problem, but like I said, HL2 spontaneously started to download one day. If the port was blocked, wouldn't the download be impossible? Also, I used to be able to download CSS just fine, even when the HL2 download didn't work. So while it's seems like a port issue, that can't be the case. Though I admit I'm not a networking expert- anyone have any insight in that regard?

P.S. Thanks Backslash for actually trying to help, rather than just attack me and insult my intelligence.

If you want help, perhaps you should ask for it in a more civilized manner, as opposed to calling the software company "cocksuckers."

I was just venting. I've had nothing but problems with Steam, and I had thought that I had finally sorted them out, and then they resurfaced on top of all the server crap I was putting up with for WoW. Oh the anger.
And anyway, I wasn't calling anyone here ****suckers, or any other names. Fanboys just take an insult to their company personally.

Fanboys do. And so do people who like the company and what they're doing. Not to mention the game.
