Time to decide - IE, or another browser - help!
2004-04-30, 2:31 PM #1
So yeah, I've started going off the beaten track with my applications and stopped using the normal Windows ones, but right now I'm downloading the new Longhorn build of IE (6.05) and was reading about Opera - can someone please tell me what the best browser out there is, and I know it's probably not easy to answer!

Well ive used:

IE
Firefox
Mozilla
Netscape
Konqueror
Opera

and Firefox beats them all. Its got a great combination of all that I loved in IE (cntrl enter, alt D), and so much more.
Opera has a little more compatability, but its not as cool I think [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Firefox. The extensions are great as well. You might also want to check out Thunderbird if you need a good e-mail client.

Quick, albeit silly sounding quessie - if need be, I'll be able to switch back to IE easily... right?

Well I've just got my hands on Firefox, and I'll admit it takes getting used to, but so far I can observe that it's darned fast.

Im not going to force you into a certain browser. But the best browser has a red "O" as an icon and rhymes with Fropera

Might as well try that next - I like Firefox more than IE at any rate.

Opera is a good browser, but does it still have a banner ad if you don't pay for it? I always found that to be a bit irritating.

Another vote for Firefox. It's everything I look for in a wo.. er, browser.

Well now I've got both Opera and Firefox and am wondering which I like more... Firefox had better viewing space, but there's something about Opera I like...

I despise teh Opera. I got enough ads without it throwing one in the middle of the toolbar. I think that Firefox is much greater, especially in respect to its extensions.

Personally, I've never really had any problems with IE. I like FireFox as well though.

I've used IE, and just switched to FireFox a few weeks ago. There's not much difference between IE and FireFox that I can tell, other than the pages load faster, it has a download manager, and IMO is easier to use then IE after getting used to it.

I haven't realy tried any other browsers though.

I guess you totally missed the "no popups" part, and the extensions. For God's sake, look at the extensions! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I personally use Firefox for a number of reasons; tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, in-browser search engine, and mouse gestures being among them. I absolutely love being able to search the sitesI search most often without navigating to them.

I installed Opera on my parents' '98 box because I wanted to get them away from IE's suckiness. So far, they've reacted rather well to it. I personally don't like the banner ad, but that's just me.

In conclusion, Firefox > IE.

Yep, check out the extensions and download one of the mouse gestures ones - you can open, close, refresh, move back or forward (in fact pretty much everything is covered) with a hold of one button and a swish of the mouse. It's a godsend.

Opera has it built in as standard - I (like you are at the moment) flick between the two - it depends what I'm doing - and I agree that Opera just "has something about it". I love em both to be honest. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

And now I use Opera for mail, chat and browsing [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] All in fullscreen... (not that ie-ish fullscreen but real fullscreen, everything is controlable by mousegestures [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] )

I'm pretty sure IE does true-fullscreen. You just set the menu to autohide when you're in F11-mode.

There's only 2 things that Opera has over Firefox. Those are, 1) Links automatically open in a new tab, and 2) Mouse gestures.

I used Opera 7 for about 2 months and found that it crashed quite a bit.

I've been using Firefox for about 2 months now and like it. I just hate the clicking of the wheel to get links to open in a new tab rather than a new window. :/

Both of those can be fixed via extensions.

Links in new tab in Firefox = middle click. And I think you may be able to set it to be any mouse button, but I think that's only in Mozilla, unless you want an extension.
