To slightly paraphrase from Bills Topic:

Soda Vs. Pop?

Simple as that.

i agree with wuss..... i dont like it when someone refered to it as "pop".... when they refer to it as coke i think their talking about coca-cola..... i prefer soda, as it has been refered to since it was sold only at the drug store dispenser things
I can't wait for the day schools get the money they need, and the military has to hold bake sales to afford bombs.

If we're referring to generic fizzy drinks, then that's what they are. Fizzy drinks.

According to dictionary.com, the correct term is soft drink. Soda and pop are just regional stuff. By the way, you guys realize some people call it "soda pop", right?

Actually, now that I think of it, I rarely use the term "pop" or "soda" in front of anyone. If I do it's pop, and only when I'm at home, else I follow it up with the word "dude" for some reason. Normally, I just say the name of the beverage I wish to consume (i.e. Mountain Dew, 99% of the time).

I was just going to say, soda pop.

I call it soda, though.
Actually, I usually refer to it as "carbonated stuff," because I don't drink it -- people ask me if I want a coke persay, and I say "eh I don't drink carbonated stuff"

You're missing soft drink, too. And carbonated beverage.

Grammatically, "pop" is the proper abbreviation for "soda pop". In that phrase, "Soda" is an adjective describing the noun, "pop". When shortening an adjective-noun phrase, you always drop the adjective. For example, "red wagon" would be shortened to "wagon". "Rabid monkey" would be shortened to "monkey". And so on.

The phrase "soda pop" is an alteration of the earlier "soda water", which referred to basic carbonated water (also called "club soda" or "seltzer water"). When flavouring was added to soda water, the resulting product was called "soda pop," to distinguish it from regular soda water. It was called "pop" because of the popping noise made when one withdrew the cork from the bottle.

So you people who call it "soda" are just wrong.

And you people who call all pop "coke" just have a heinous disregard for the English language. :p
So sayest the Writer of Silly Things!

If you want to argue semantics, actually, "pop" is not REALLY a noun, I don't know what it is but it's more like an onomatopoeia. Frankly, it's stupid, especially since if you get it froma fountain or modern-day bottle, it doesn't "pop" at all. "Soda" is more of an abbreviation of "soda water" or something similar. In that case, the "soda" is the most important part, since if you just asked for "water" you'd be very sorely disappointed by what you got. Soda is the most effective method of describing your desire, that is, any one of many carbonated beverages. If it's assumed that you're asking for a beverage, that is.

Soda is carbonated water. Pop is what dried corn kernals do if you heat them.
