On another note, does anybody know if the Hoary apt sources have been frozen? I haven't gotten any updates at all in the past few weeks, hence why I'm running 1.0.2 rather than 1.0.3.

Tabbed browsing is the main reason why I use it. Instead of having 20 IE's open, you can have one Firefox browser open and surf through thoses sites 10x faster.

I think tabbed browsing really sets it above. I didn't really mind it much until IE got overloaded with spyware and ads, so I turned to Firefox and never looked back.
2005-04-27, 5:18 PM #57
You people keep saying that you never see popups and the like with IE. Well, with Firefox you never even have to see banners. I'll see one every once in a while if I go to a site where I've never been before, but those are soon gone too. It's surprising to see how cluttered sites are with ads on IE after you've used Firefox with the Adblock extension for a while.

I have no problem with banners. By blocking ALL ads you cut off yet another source of income for websites.

The only banners I like blocked are the ones which make sound.

Along with added anti-popup integration in Firefox when I was still using Windows 98 SE, which ended no more than a year ago.

And I ceased caring a long time ago. If your site is stupid enough to have annoying banners, I don't need to be watching them. Google ads > you (no I'm not saying all sites should or even could use google ads, before you put words into my mouth)

And Cool Matty--JUST your PSP? What about mine, and FCTuner's?

google ads are possibly the most useful ads I've ever encountered. I love having a banner that applies DIRECTLY to what I'm posting on a thread about, looking up, etc. I actually visited and purchase off of google ads very often.

Often like every other day, or often as in twice? :p

In relation to how much stuff I buy online, a ratio of 2/3 times. As how much I visit just the sites they advertise? Quite often, as in, every day.

When I use IE I can be sure that the sites will work with all their capabilities... Firefox does it to for most sites but it still needs a bit more work before I'll use it as my main browser.
2005-04-28, 7:16 AM #72
It'll happen the other way round. The sites will get changed to support the standards.

That's right.

Oh wait, IE doesnt fully support CSS or CSS2.... Hell MS have admitted that IE7 wont even fully support CSS2.

The main problem i have with IE is it's lack of proper XHTML support. Because of IE, XHTML has become just a tidied up version of HTML4, eventually we'll be able to use XHTML to it's potential and serve it as application/xhtml+xml instead of sending it as text/html. (In doing that, from a technical point of view makes it invalid anyway) If we could use application/xhtml+xml people would be forced to write valid pages because they wouldnt render otherwise.... and it would make the internet a much nicer place. Espcecially for web developers, we wouldnt need messy browser hacks to make things render correctly in all the browsers. (Hopefully, ;))

Whilst the updates for IE in XP SP2 do fix many of the problems that caused me to switch to firefox in the first place; by the time XP-SP2 was released it was too late, and now I use firefox out of habit. Also- I can't stand using browsers without tabs- they're just so useful!

I'm sorry but have you ever tried to drive firefox thru a MSN site like Myspace or something like that? It's like trying to drive a toaster thru a damn car wash. Now I use FireFox for everything else but I do use IE a bit for MSN sites.
2005-04-28, 10:30 AM #77
I use FF on MSN's Myspace. Works fine for me, and yeah, so I can't change the font or colour on my posts, but frankly I wouldn't want to. Because mine is sexy enough as it is.

That's because MS codes their sites on purpose to break with other browsers. You can't blame firefox for the fact that MSN sites send broken pages to firefox/opera but not to IE.

Enter: Opera. i can't believe more people don't use it. Obviously, its a matter of personal prefernce, but Opera comes already stocked with so much more then the standard Firefox, you neededn't end up with a frankenstien browser, its all made to fit together perfectly from the start. I think people start using firefox and don't even try opera, frankly. oh, well /rant
