Valve's HDR video.

Old news? If not, check it out.

Looks neat. For 170mb clip, its a bit short.

(If you people turn this into a D3/HL2 debate, I will find and destroy your closest relatives.) [/color]

Personally I thought D3 was better than HL2 but that's just my opinion. Counter Strike still rules though.
2005-04-27, 1:13 PM #6
I'm with the majority so far here, HL2 is much better than D3. At least it's not obsessed with darkness.

Actually its just a poor attempt to get people interested in the thread.

Yeah, I can't believe Brian dereailed the thread so quickly. Why must these things always degenerate into a D3 vs. HL2 flamewar? Why not some other game?

So have any of you actually watched the video? Its short, but it looks nice.

this feature is being implemented throughout the game right?

I'm downloading it right now. Screenshots make it look amazing.

I believe it will be an optional feature for standard HL2/CSS, but it will be mandatory for Lost Coast
Moo.

I can't wait, HL2 is realistic enough as it is... Let alone adding HDR and other cool features.

In other news--I saw the one on the second level that had HDR. That was pretty good. I'll check this one out too.

HL2 Silver: 60 Dollars
Approx. 20 hours of 500k broadband internet access: 2 dollars and 30 cents
Steam: Free
Hating a game because its distribution software is buggy: Priceless

What I like the most about HL2 is how nicely it runs on my pretty old computer, heh.

Actually I hated doom3 and I never played HL2 because it requires Steam.

Regarding the video, I watched it and it was mildly interesting. I don't even know what HDR is or why it is impressive. I didn't see much different than ut2k4?

Nope, I don't think it is. I'm pretty sure it's "Martha Stewart."

You guys should really look these things up.

ph3@12! *hides* :em321:

And yes Thrawn, I know, but you get the general idea. I knew should have looked that up. *grumbles* Spellbound .73 has let me down once again.

HDR is an impressive tool when used correctly. It emulates the too-bright sensation of a light source, since CRTs can't really create that sensation too accurately. Sadly, it's most often over or underused. FarCry's was okay, and it added a lot of depth of color, but it also washed out the beaches on every card (except for mine aparrently).

I don't know if this really good HDR effect present here (a screenshot by Valve.) It seems a bit overdone. (or is this just some sort of bloom effect?)

The problem is, HDR needs to be in motion to get the effect. A still screenshot isn't the way to show HDR in action.

The video is pretty damn cool, but it's not nearly long enough for the friggin file size.

Oh, and HL2 >>>>>>> D3.

Wow, Echoman, that's really overdone. It looks like someone just upped the gamma a whole bunch.

Based on the movie, I'd say it looks thoroughly unimpressive.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

True. And I don't know if that pic is the final product by Valve.
