I miss the old days of gaming.....
2005-05-23, 12:03 PM #1
I miss the old days of gaming like Jedi Knight where there were over 20 levels and games had GOOD stories and you could play the game over and over again and not get bored of it. Now adays games are short with all of 10 levels and the stories are not original they are mostly based off of a movie. Sure JK has terrible graphics but I think it kicks the hell out of JO and JA. The story is 10000 times better and you actually can choose to go to the dark side unlike JO. Does anyone else know what I am talking about?

There's still some great games being made. JO just isn't one of them.
The music industry is a cruel and shallow money trench where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.

This isn't going to be another JK vs. JO/JA thread, right?

God hope not.
Code to the left of him, code to the right of him, code in front of him compil'd and thundered. Programm'd at with shot and $SHELL. Boldly he typed and well. Into the jaws of C. Into the mouth of PERL. Debug'd the 0x258.

No I am just saying that the old games are bigger and better than some of the new games

The current market and technology demand a far greater level of detail than the games of old. Meaning either a much lengthier development time, a much bigger development team, or a much shorter game. From a financial standpoint, shorter games make the most sense.

Maybe Jedi Knight was a bad example…. Look at this instead. When Need for Speed Hot Pursuit II came out I was really disappointed in it. The Hot Pursuit mode sucked compared to High Stakes. Sure the graphics are better but what is a game if all it has are graphics.

Another example:

X-Wing Alliance was a great game. Sure the graphics suck compared to today but is there a game that has that same style now? No there is not.

I understand that there are great game out now but…. Maybe I worded it wrong. Sequels today suck compared to the other games that came out before them most of the time. Warcraft, Doom, and Halo being some of the acceptations but when you look at some of the other games you notice a lot of problems that game developers leave out that were in the previous. Do you guys understand what I am saying now?

PS sorry about using JK as an example

Don't be. Most people round here hold JK up as a shining beacon of light in a world gone crazy.

For example, I just played the original unreal tournament demo today...

Excuse you?

JK the old days of gaming?

Hardly.

There are older, much better games.
2005-05-23, 2:51 PM #15
Yeah, I still hold up the JK discs in memory of the greater days in one perspective. Of course, technology makes a better experience now.

Of course, there are the few games that have resisted time and change and are still awesome and long. Deus Ex. HL2. RtCW. UT2k4 (okay, SP isn't relevant but I <3 onslaught) 'nuff said.

Jedi Knight is still considered one of the top PC games of all time. And one of LucasArts few good classics.

The only good part about JK, is multi-player, and that with mods/levels.

Can't wait to try JA, when I get a decent PC.

My clanmates and I busted out with some Outlaws MP awhile back...such a blast. JK is probably my favorite LEC game, but there are other good ones.

JA isn't all that great, actually.

However, the JK single player is amazing. Go download Junkguy's SSR 4000 pro (I think) mod and play though single player all matrix style.

I'd agree, were it not for NOLF 1 and Deus Ex 1, especially with my time-consuming sneaky and deadly play-style (I left a lot of corpses, but they hardly ever saw it coming, were never discovered, and very few set off any alarms). Both must've been at least 40+ hours.

Unreal Tournament is a bad example too, considering UT2k4 has just as much, if not more, content than the original. In fact, UT2k4 is one of the best examples of what a follow-up or sequel should be.
2005-05-25, 2:00 AM #32
So long as you discount UT2003, which wasn't great.

There are still some great modern games. KOTOR is a prime example of this. I think I played through it at least 5 times before getting tired of it.
