Star Wars is Dead to me
2005-06-02, 11:56 AM #1
So, a funny story. My girlfriend has two kids, a son, 8, and a daughter, 12. They were visiting their dad over the weekend and he took them to see Episode III. They wanted to know what happened NEXT, so I broke out my VHS copies of the original trilogy (THX mastered versions, NOT the "special ed" editions). We watched A New Hope, and although the kids liked it, they told me it was stupid how he created the first 3 episodes AFTER the second 3 episodes. They said everything looked lame and that Obi-Wan was "so old."

The other thing that is missing is that they already KNOW darth vader is anakin skywalker and thus they already know that vader is luke's father. It sort of ruins the whole punch line of Empire Strikes Back :( If they thought Obi-Wan looked old, wait till they see Yoda!

They were created in the order they should be seen, I'd say.

Star wars 1-3 weren't anything near the quality of the original films. Why is it, that when film producers get money, they mess up series?

When Vader tells luke he is his father, they already KNOW that, so it's not a surprise.

Uh. it ruins how stong the "Luke, I am your Father" line is.

I think your first mistake was showing them the original version of the movies. While you may not like them, the DVD editions were created to make the transition between 1-3 and 4-6 that much smoother. You know what was changed, creating your dislike of them, but they will never know the difference, and the transition won't be much of a shock. Going from 1-3 to the original versions of 4-6 is like getting out of a really warm hot tub and jumping into a really cold pool. It's just not fun.

Yeah, but that's like rewriting Charlotte's Web such that the spider doesn't die at the end. Sure, it's easier to take but it doesn't have the impact of the original, and nobody should be messing with stuff from 30 years ago just to make it fit with some new crap he spewed out. That's just bogus. I'm not buying or renting the DVD versions, they will not come into my house. GL can't rewrite history, much as he would like to.

That is really sad. I LOVE the old star wars, but kids these days like cartoons and new movies. I am sad. :(

A fun little bit of trivia: The script was actually written as Vader saying "Obi-Wan killed your father!" so that the father-son wouldn't be leaked. Only Lucas, Jones, and Hamill knew about it.

I loved the original trilogy like nothing else, but when I lined all 6 movies up and watched them straight, even I felt a little spoiled by today's graphical prowess. The CG stuff doesn't make the movie, sometimes it even detracts from the prequels, and I still think that 4-6 are better... but watching them all together made 4-6 seem a little more empty. PLus, the whole Vader surprise is spoiled AND the final battle on the second Death Star which always made me sit up straight and get tingles down my back lost its flair after having seen the crazy fights in Ep3.

I think the kids should see Epi. 4-6 first because they are the classic Star Wars. It builds up anticipation (I guess) for more of the story. And the original trilogy has an impact on views that the new trilogy does not. Should people see the crappy Exorcist: The Beginning before original The Exorcist?

The DVD owns, it's the "bonus disc" where Lucas reveals that Star Wars is a fluke because he wanted to cast midgets as the heros and have a good father and a bad father for the main characters. If I was him, I would have kept my mouth shut about that fact.

I even heard somewhere that there wasn't even going to be lightsabers. (somewhere here, that is).

I was just thinking on how Lucas got carried away with wrapping everything up and the end of Episode 3, when he shouldn't have. He ruined the surprise that Leia is Luke's sister, along with the much more important one about Vader being Luke's father.

Only if you watch the prequels first, and we've already established that you're supposed to watch the OT first.

It's odd that that's one of those things we think about when the thought of raising our kids comes up. But, yeah they'll definitely have to see IV-VI first.

I just finished watching the OT on the DVD, and while Morrison's voice instead of Wingreen's for Boba still pisses me off, I don't mind the changes that much. The final battles in RotJ are still unbelievable, and RotS couldn't even touch the final space battle with it's opening (one of the flaws I see in RotS).
Steal my dreams and sell them back to me.....

Yes, I will make sure to make that sound parenting decision.

By chance, I just felt like watching Ep4 again, and I realized that you if never saw any SW movie, that must be the first to see because it is basically an introduction into the workings of the environment of SW. Obi describes all about the force: it's like a tutorial.
2005-06-02, 6:08 PM #34
Contrary to popular belief, Boba Fett and Greedo are not main characters. Sorry :(

It is odd, here we are talking about how our kids won't be able to enjoy Star Wars in the same way that we have, completely ignoring the fact that it's irrelevant when compared to what new drugs of their generation they'll be tempted to abuse if we fail as parents and let them see the prequels.

The best trilogy is 3-5.

yes, 3-5 is the best trilogy (:D). I also think that we need to take every copy and trace of history that has to do with Ep1 and BURN IT LIKE THE EVIL IT IS. Then we need to build a time machine and go back to the late 70's so we can force Lucas to make Ep. 1 with relatively good actors and all the old special effects. He can make 2 and 3 when he did, just make Ep. 1 back then.
I had a blog. It sucked.
2005-06-02, 7:31 PM #37
At that age they'll probably like RotJ the best.

Yeah, you have to watch to OT first.

The whole notion of "Yoda, you seek Yoda!" would have the viewer yelling "THAT'S YODA RIGHT THERE!!"

There's no surprises. Watch it the way it was made.
2005-06-02, 7:44 PM #39
4,5,1,2,3,6.

Original Trilogy up until "I am your father" than SUPER WHAMMO FLASHBACK to the story of Anakin. Ep 3 thus ending with the revelation of Leia being the twin. Then ZOOMING FORWARD to episode 6 for the finale.

Jones...Indiana Jones...Harrison Ford...Han Solo...

So you're telling me Han Solo knew Vader was his father all this time? That must mean he was part of the Empire, and was intimate with Vader. But he must be a Jedi to know such secrets. Jedi aren't in the Empire, so he was a Sith.

So you're telling me Han Solo was a Sith Lord who betrayed the Empire, killed his master, and is now set to become the new Sith Lord.

(I don't know why I had so much fun with that  :( :o )

But yeah, I agree with Flirbnic.
